Sum-Up

In-depth analysis further down.
If you’re looking for some screenshots click here to view all the ones I took for this game.

[th]🟩 Pros[/th] [th]🟥 Cons[/th]

• Very good horror atmosphere that ensures solid immersion. Damp, pitch-black lab corridors, unholy sounds echo all over. • Tense gameplay: enemies could pop up from or be hidden anywhere, while you’ll be starving and wounded. No guidance at all—you’re on your own. • The side-lore is interesting enough, and decently written. • Low variety of total content, especially for a roguelike, which should have replay value as one of its strong suits. • Relatively tame challenge level even on the hardest difficulty, due to somewhat abundant supplies and modest enemy numbers. Despite being a roguelike, there isn’t a lot of replay value due to the extremely limited total content variety offered—a few more runs at best.

Do I recommend it? Yes, but not for full price. Even if the game is already cheap, I feel like it simply doesn’t offer enough content and replayability to be worth getting without discounts. If you’re a fan of top-down horror such as Darkwood, or old-school survival horror, this is a decent pick.

Conclusion:
A small but decent-enough roguelike. It nails the atmosphere and gameplay basics, but is held back by its lack of variety and quite mild challenge level for this type of game.

In-Depth

Writing & Worldbuilding
Woken up in a dimly-lit prison cell, you have no idea of what’s going on. Your only realization is that something is very wrong, and you need to get out of whatever place that is. This is Sporeborn Dark’s short but effective incipit to your adventure through the dark tunnels and gore-stained rooms of an underground facility, where something clearly didn’t go as it was supposed to. The only form of storytelling is found in the sparse notes and documents scattered around the facility. These feed you lore fragments about the research conducted there and the misadventures of other people that, just like you, got caught in the fallout of what happened. Written in a local made-up language, some of them may give you hints about what you’ll need to do in order to reach salvation, but most will be diaries and logs of what happened before. They’re decently written, and do a fair job in providing sparse lore caches that help keep the exploration interesting by giving it a sense of story. The artistic side is Sporeborn Dark’s strongest suit in both visual and audio departments. You’ll go through a living nightmare stained with gore and unknown growths, scattered furniture and corpses all over. This way of building the world conveys very well the fact that something unimaginable, violent and devastating happened; the general state of locales you’ll traverse only further emphasize it, while terrible sounds constantly have you on edge — whatever made that mess might be coming for you next.
Exploration & Secrets
You’ll explore on foot, no map or other landmark will be present to make orienteering around the facility any easier. You’ll have to remember the layout of rooms, place spare items around, or move furniture in specific ways to have a reference as to where you’ve been. Doors kept open help, too, but that could also mean more openings for enemies to attack you from. Most rooms and corridors are filled with numerous furniture pieces you can’t search or destroy, but only move around to either make way or as improvised barriers against chasing enemies. It’s entirely possible to shove an enemy in a corner using indestructible furniture, but then again they will push it out of the way soon after you stop grabbing it; this mechanic is clearly inspired by Darkwood, but doesn’t have a practical function in the gameplay system in this case. Most locales have a couple usable items, weapons or food—because yes, you’ll starve rather fast and your body needs sustenance—maximum stamina, used to sprint and melee attack, drains the more emaciated you become. Your limited inventory, just a couple of slots, needs to house ammo, medical items, food, consumables and even key machine components to progress towards your escape—it’s inevitable that you’ll need to leave stuff behind, in a survival horror-esque tight inventory system. Items don’t have descriptions, and some may be even harmful to you—the only way to know is to try. You’ll also be able to only carry one weapon, melee or ranged, at a time—swapping an old gun for a new one, if you have the ammo, will be a regular occurrence. There are no real secret or hidden areas to mention. At most, you’ll find lore pieces and more uncommon items along the way, but in my experience, there is no unique zone to speak of anywhere in the map.
Combat System & Bosses
You’ll either use melee weapons, such as iron pipes, or if you’re lucky and have the ammo, guns such as shotguns or pistols. The arsenal variety isn’t that great, with only three ranged and two melee weapons in total. The same goes for enemies, featuring a small ranged variant, an average melee one, and a “boss” of sorts which is very tough and large in size. Killing enemies doesn’t award anything, they’re just there to hunt you down: the best course of action is to either evade them or lock them inside rooms with furniture and doors, since they can’t open those. Combat-wise, a basic system of melee swings and ranged aiming is in place, but with no further mechanical complexity than bashing or shooting your foes to death, with aiming becoming more accurate the longer you look down the sights. With so few weapons and foes, the replay value becomes slight even only after a few runs, because everything will feel like “already seen” despite the layout being randomized every time. Your foes aren’t particularly strong either, with the average “medium” enemy taking several hits to kill you and being rather easy to kite around unless you’re severely malnourished.
------------------- ENGLISH REVIEW----------------- As a fan of the Darkwood game, I am deeply disappointed. The game is made carelessly and is not worth the money. It doesn't even look like a demo version. This is a bagel without filling. A Roguelike game without any content. =============================================================== What did you WOULD LIKE about the game: * The graphics is not so bad. Refers to Darkwood =============================================================== What you DON'T like: * First and foremost: The absence of a map and random generation of the dungeon. Since the dungeon is randomly generated, there is no logic in it, its geography is useless to remember, there is no map in it, the rooms are similar to each other. * 3 Item slots 1 weapon slot in the inventory. Starting from the previous point. In a game where there is no map and the dungeon is randomly generated, this is simply not enough for survival. You have to skip half of the items and try to remember where they were in order to return to them. This is very stupid and not interesting. I don't enjoy this kind of gameplay, it's a pain and a hassle. * A dumb quest with generators. In order to get out of the dungeon, the hero needs to turn on 6 generators. For each of them, you need to find and bring a part from the generator. Based on the previous two points: 3 slots in the inventory, which are already missing. And you also have to carry useless parts with you in them (ultimate stupidity), so also the parts themselves with generators appear in random places every time you play a new game. A very hacky idea on the part of the developers. The quest is primitive and at the same time not feasible. We need to assemble 6 pieces of parts in a game with 3 compartments for items. The authors have obvious problems with mathematics, or they want to make the players suffer so much. * There is no plot in the game. It's just that some guy woke up in prison and is trying to get out. Mushroom monsters. How original is it? No. * There is no music in the game. * The locations are primitive and monotonous. * Little content. There are few types of monsters, few types of objects. There is too little content for a Roguelike game. * In a game where there are only 3 backpack cells, they made 3 types of weapons that require 3 types of different ammo, which negates the usefulness of all three types of weapons, since it is almost impossible to find suitable ammo. * The hero is constantly dying of hunger. In a game with 3 inventory cells, you also need to look for food and, if possible, carry it with you. * The hero has 2 arms, but he can only carry one weapon. Weapons also cannot be put in a backpack along with objects, and they would not fit there. * After playing the game 4 times (I literally forced myself to do it, trying to find something good in the game), I was able to find the generators only on the fourth attempt, but I found only 3 out of 6. Then I began to get confused in the area, the hero began to starve, I ran out of all supplies Both the resources and I were killed by a random monster. * Hero loosing his stamina all the time. Nevertheless if he have 100% of his stamina - he still can't run longer then 3 seconds... it's so f'kn annoying!!! * Hero also loosing stamina while aming a gun! How is that possible? The gun is too heavy or something? The result: No map, no content, no inventory. The game is a stupidly made left heel, a craft on the knee, which was made from ready-made assets in 2-3 days. The authors did not think at all about the comfort of the player. They don't care about the players at all. The game is not catchy and cannot be interesting. The authors have focused on high difficulty and challenge, but this game does not motivate you to try to complete it. This game is just boring to play. Without a minimap, the exploration of the game world is impossible. Drawing a map on paper yourself is not the solution. We are in 2024, Kamon, who will do this? The game needs to be globally redesigned if the authors want to get at least one honest positive review.
Sporeborn Dark fails at accomplishing a satisfying gameplay experience given its faults with the randomly generated maps composed of non-interesting layouts and features a lot furniture that just gets in the way. You're easily lost and confused with little to no clues as to where to explore next. NPCs, notes and tapes contribute little towards the story and gameplay. Enemies are far too easy and spaced far apart, which removes a lot of the scariness factor. This game takes inspiration off Darkwood and tries something similar but ultimately fails. Play Darkwood instead.
This game truly shines with its incredible replayability and pulse-pounding suspense. Every run feels like a new adventure, thanks to procedurally generated levels that keep things unpredictable and exciting—you never know what’s waiting around the corner! Strategic planning is key to survival. You’re constantly balancing your resources, making split-second decisions about whether to face the danger head-on or melt into the shadows. The moments when you're forced to go stealth, heart racing as you hear the monsters getting closer, are absolutely thrilling! With each attempt, you dive deeper into the game’s world, uncovering more about its secrets. Even if you don’t make it, it feels like progress—there’s always something new to learn. That said, the game can be tough for new players, and a little more variety in pacing would help the tension hit even harder. If you’re looking for a game that will keep your heart racing and make you crave “just one more run,” this is an absolute must-play. It’s a strategic, nerve-wracking experience you won’t forget!
- Gloomy atmosphere, good graphics and darkness mechanics - It's scary at first because you can't see anything and it's hard to navigate, but then you realize how you can visually mark passed places and get used to the sounds and monsters and the gameplay changes a bit - Well done sounds add a lot to the experience - It's interesting to explore rooms, recognizing that something has happened in them from the blood trail - Not a long game - Similar to Darkwood in graphics only. No depth to the story, although the game is interesting I advise you to play, but do not build high expectations ____________________________________ - Мрачная атмосфера, хорошая графика и механика темноты - По началу страшно, потому что ничего не видно и сложно ориентироваться в пространстве, но потом ты понимаешь как можно визуально отмечать пройденные места и привыкаешь к звукам и монстрам и геймплей немного меняется - Хорошо сделанные звуки сильно дополняют ощущения - Интересно исследовать комнаты, узнавая, что в них что-то произошло по кровавым следам - Не долгая игра - С Darkwood похожи только графикой.
Only did a couple runs and they ended in swift deaths, harder than Darkwood imo. RE style inventory management makes this game stressful. Graphics are well done and environment are dark and oppressive.
