Замечательная игра в духе The Evil Within.
👑 Powered by HoI 4 Deu Curators group in German / English 👑⠀⠀⠀

Follow Main group
 Follow Second group
 Follow Third group
and discover more reviews from me.
Connection: The Nightmare Within is an indie survival horror title developed and published by Dragon Level that deliberately channels the atmosphere and structural design of late-1990s and early-2000s horror classics while attempting to layer in modern sensibilities. Framed as a psychological thriller with investigative undertones, the game places players in the role of a private investigator who becomes entangled in a conspiracy revolving around experimental “mind-space” technology. This concept, which allows consciousness to be drawn into distorted nightmare realms, provides the narrative backbone and justification for the game’s shifting environments, grotesque enemies, and reality-bending sequences. While the premise is not entirely unprecedented within the horror genre, it offers fertile ground for unsettling imagery and layered tension. The structure of the game leans heavily into traditional survival horror design. Exploration is methodical, environments are often claustrophobic, and resource management plays a meaningful role in shaping player decisions. Ammunition and healing supplies are not limitless, encouraging cautious engagement rather than reckless action. The game allows players to switch between classic fixed camera angles and a more contemporary over-the-shoulder perspective, a feature that highlights its dual identity. The fixed angles evoke nostalgia and carefully frame corridors and rooms to heighten tension, while the modern camera option offers a more immediate, action-oriented feel during combat encounters. This flexibility caters to both purists of old-school horror and players accustomed to contemporary third-person shooters. Combat blends deliberate pacing with bursts of chaos. Weapons range from handguns and shotguns to heavier firearms, and enemies include twisted humanoid creatures and larger boss entities that demand pattern recognition and environmental awareness. Encounters are designed to be threatening without overwhelming, though the responsiveness of controls and hit detection can occasionally feel uneven. Boss battles are among the most memorable segments, combining environmental storytelling with mechanical challenges that force players to adapt rather than simply unload ammunition. While the combat does not reinvent genre conventions, it remains serviceable and at times genuinely tense, particularly when paired with limited resources and confined spaces. Puzzle-solving is interwoven throughout the campaign, often requiring players to collect clues, manipulate objects, and revisit previously explored areas with new information. These puzzles break up the combat rhythm and reinforce the investigative theme, though their complexity varies. Some riddles feel satisfying and logically integrated into the environment, while others may lean toward familiar genre tropes. Nonetheless, they contribute to the deliberate pacing that defines the experience, ensuring that the game is not purely action-driven but instead balances cerebral engagement with survival tension. Visually, Connection: The Nightmare Within demonstrates ambition. Detailed environments, moody lighting, and cinematic compositions create a consistent sense of dread. The mind-space sequences allow for surreal and grotesque imagery that contrasts sharply with the more grounded urban settings, reinforcing the psychological horror angle. Shadows, flickering lights, and environmental decay are used effectively to build atmosphere. While the overall presentation is impressive for an indie project, certain animations and environmental textures occasionally reveal budget constraints. Despite these limitations, the art direction succeeds in establishing a cohesive and immersive tone. Sound design plays a critical role in sustaining tension. Ambient audio cues, distant echoes, and subtle environmental noises contribute to the feeling of isolation. The soundtrack underscores dramatic moments without overwhelming them, often relying on restraint rather than constant musical presence. Sudden audio spikes during enemy encounters or scripted scares enhance the sense of unpredictability. This careful layering of sound elevates even relatively simple scenarios into nerve-wracking experiences. The narrative unfolds gradually through cutscenes, documents, and environmental storytelling. As the protagonist delves deeper into the conspiracy, themes of perception, memory, and psychological manipulation emerge. While the plot contains twists and attempts to blur the line between reality and nightmare, its execution can feel uneven. Some players may appreciate the ambition and layered mystery, while others might find certain developments predictable or loosely connected. Even so, the central concept of entering corrupted mental landscapes provides enough intrigue to maintain forward momentum. In terms of length, the game offers a concise experience, typically lasting several hours depending on playstyle and difficulty. This relatively compact runtime can be viewed as either a strength or a drawback. On one hand, it avoids overstaying its welcome and maintains a focused narrative arc. On the other, players expecting a more expansive campaign may feel that the journey concludes just as it begins to fully explore its potential. Replay value primarily stems from experimenting with different difficulty settings or camera modes rather than branching story paths. Ultimately, Connection: The Nightmare Within stands as a passionate homage to survival horror traditions while striving to carve out its own identity through psychological themes and mind-space mechanics. It succeeds most strongly in atmosphere, environmental tension, and nostalgic design philosophy. Its shortcomings—such as occasional mechanical roughness and narrative unevenness—are tempered by clear creative intent and dedication to genre fundamentals. For players who appreciate methodical exploration, puzzle integration, and moody horror experiences reminiscent of classic titles, it offers a focused and atmospheric journey that demonstrates both respect for its inspirations and ambition to expand upon them.
The game fixates far too much on mundane puzzles for my tastes. I like Resident Evil, The Evil Within 1&2, Alone in the Dark: New Nightmare, Eternal Darkness. ..games where the focus is more on exploration and impressing me with their set pieces. This game is also apparently only a few hours long (I bailed on it early).
Very short, but very good game. I liked it. Controls a bit clumsy, sometimes FPS dropped much too much (as low as 2 FPS). But all in all game is great.
Connection: The Nightmare Within——7.5/10,生化危机爱好者的游戏荒时候的福音。
A decent enough retro survival horror for the fans of the PS2/PS3 era. Around the level of Hollowbody, not as good as Tormented Souls or Post Trauma. Pros: - The difficulty is just right, but the boss fights are more difficult than average. - The puzzles are quite decent. - The story is not bad, but the voice acting makes it cheesier than it's supposed to be. - The game never outstays its welcome. - It has an optional "retro" filter that makes the graphics pixelated and it actually looks better that way. Cons: - There's nothing memorable here. - The monster designs leave a lot to be desired. - Gen AI was used for a few pictures, and one of them looks horrendously out of place.
A very fun and classic feeling survival horror game that doesn’t overstay its welcome. I’ll be largely reviewing this game as a fixed camera survival horror game, as that’s my preference. I did give it a go with the over the shoulder mode after beating it on fixed camera, but it wasn’t really clicking for me in that camera style so I gave up about halfway through. Connection: The Nightmare Within is...surprisingly challenging. Maybe I'm just not that good at it, but I dunno...I play a lot of fixed camera survival horror and survival horror in general, and I found some segments of this game to be pretty damn tough. The game sets itself aside from many of its peers with the inclusion of a dodge roll. No, it doesn't really take away from the survival horror-ness of the experience, the enemies are quick and you'll be needing the dodge roll to evade attacks. There are a couple of combat arena sections that'll have you under high pressure to manage all the threats, so expect more reaction time/skill based action than you'd get in many fixed camera style games. Honestly, overall it was handled pretty well, but yeah, challenging for sure (with the exception of the last boss - that was not hard in a fun way, it was just too hard). The game has some really nice camera work and great framing of shots in the fixed camera mode, and some nice atmosphere with the music and lighting. It’s very cool how they used the “mind space” environment to tie disparate regions together seamlessly. I love to see the developers embracing their choice of environment and playing to the strengths of that choice. Now, for some complaints... Man the characters are stiff. It actually made the game come across as a lot more humorous than I am sure was intended, especially in conjunction with the hamfisted voice acting. I can’t say it was the worst offender for this (looking at you - Fear the Dark Unknown), but it still makes it a bit hard to take the game’s story all that seriously. Tiny text...I am constantly at war with tiny text and needlessly small icons, so, although this game is not as bad as it can get, it’s still got a bit of a leaning towards these things. In an era of accessibility, it is truly baffling to me that it isn’t common practice to just let players dial up the size of text to be comfortably legible without having to lean into the screen. The whole trend of having the inventory shoved off to the side of the screen is pretty tiresome too, for the same reason as the text. If you are going to be minimalist you had better have a good reason. That said, the inventory on the side in this game is justified (it’s just unnecessarily small) as it follows the Tormented Souls approach to puzzles, using a cursor to drag items from the inventory to the required spot. Anyway, don’t mind me, it’s not gonna bother everyone, it’s just a pet peeve - I know what I like and why I like it, and I like not having to strain to read/see things in games! Although I appreciate the addition of the low poly/old school filter option in theory, this game was absolutely not designed for it and it genuinely just makes everything muddy and harder to work with. Things that are supposed to be clear become sludge and it's just genuinely uglier. I love the oldschool aesthetic and I'd almost always take it over the glistening hyper realism and homogony of modern day graphical styles, but yeah...this filter is not it. Okay, issues aside, this game was a blast. Some nice authentic survival horror puzzle box level design, engaging and challenging take on the action that ends up heightening the challenge level significantly, some lovely atmosphere and music...and even at full price this is a good deal of content for what you pay. Absolutely worth a go!
