I've had this game for a long time, but have not played it much. Every once in a while, I re-install and play it again only to be reminded of how terrible it is, so I uninstall it. Wash, rinse, repeat. The graphics are nice, the sound and music are good, but the game mechanics are really, really bad. The game is really now about tactics, or strategic unit selection or placement. This game is about grinding unit builds until you have a massive army, then you deploy said army in the field and they are slaughtered by your opponent until you wear them down, or run out of deploy-able units. Basically, every mission is a mini war of attrition. There's no strategy to it, if you happen to win, it's just dumb luck. This game proves that there is a lot more to creating a good turn-based strategy game than just creating a bunch of units with and some hex maps and an AI that knows how to be just a little bit better at trading punches than you are. This game would have been a whole lot better with a few additions, like useful terrain types, line-of-sight tactics, a small, limited recon mechanic, etc. Don't buy it. If you really want to spend the money, send it to me instead. I will use your money to buy a good game. :-)
The idea at it's core in not bad, sort of x-comish base/map expansion with classic turn-based with few units on field. The problem I have lies in the impression, that this game feels glued with different style and elements which brings totally nothing to super cliche story, So, basically near zero immersion, plus "strategic" possibilities are pretty limited too. Well it's a port so WYSIWYG I suppose, but it's simply not good. Trailer is better than the actual game, congrats to trailer maker.
Slightly towards yes. Strategy with a bit mobile like attitude and forced tuts. At least it recovers from it by introducing some cool vehicles, mechs and artillery. Turn based gameplay with hex board. Conquer bases and manage your base. Fire rocket shower and other nasty weapons to defeat your foes. Maps are nice looking. Stand your ground and do different missions which are varied and mostly good. Different environments and such. Music is ok, sounds are also good. I'm missing speed up option. Slower paced game because it's a strategy but still it's not that bad.
A recycled mobile game, which makes it a very ♥♥♥♥♥♥ PC game.
"Codex of Victory" is a mobile app that's been dumped on Steam as if it was a real PC game (it's not)... it's a cash grab from greedy mobile devs. This mobile app is another great reason to never judge a book by it's cover. Usually I have the unfortunate duty of reviewing games that are awful because the graphics got phoned in, but today the graphics kinda look alright which could decieve PC gamers into paying cash money for a mobile app, which is never okay. This is a turn based strategy game that has nice game assets that could trick people into thinking this is similar to awesome games like Starcraft II, but nothing could be further from the truth. This iPhone screen tapper has you tapping away at a shallow, dumbed down resource manager with a bit of ultra-lite X-Com style gameplay on a hex grid. There's an uninspired single player campaign that's very yawnworthy. At least it's got content, instead of the "rogue-like" (procgen IS content, right??) or "PvP only" (other people ARE content, right??) schools of game design failure. From a technical perspective, as a mobile app, this doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The mobile app features low-polygon "retro" assets with a cel-shading type shader effects instead of doing their job properly and texturing the game assets with high res textures, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the late 1990s. This visual style is a method that lazy devs often use when they have a lack of interest/capabilty to create highly detailed, high poly models and instead use shader effects to disguise that shortcoming under the name of "art", or "We made it look bad on purpose", which really isn't something gamers should have to put up with. It's unclear why the developers weren't willing to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets and high resolution textures for the mobile app. It's far below the state of the art visuals gamers expect as a result of their decisions. Like, Starcraft II has much better graphics and that's at least a decade older than this. No excuses. The controls can't be customised because the game has such a dumbed down, simplified interface that it's just iPhone screen tapping stuff. The fact that the interface is this dumbed down might be seen as a problem in itself, however... this is a fairly shallow experience if you're the kind of gamer that likes to play games with deep, rich control schemes and interaction. You'll get none of that here. Because this is a mobile app, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the iPhones that the mobile app was designed for. These are unfortunate handicaps and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was an afterthought for the iPhone developers who are to blame for this. The mobile app is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for mobile phones forces upon a game. Once more, mobile devs have made gaming worse for everyone. I didn't spend thousands on building a gaming rig just so I could pretend it's an iPhone. These technical defects push this mobile app below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this mobile app was with players reveals a surprise... there's a modest spike in player counts for the mobile app. But this only happened once, around the same time that trading cards were applied to the mobile app... so this is just card idlers getting their cards and moving on. A closer look at the numbers shows the mobile app just has a couple of players every week running up the mobile app and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many mobile apps like this, with no merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards. So, should you buy this mobile app? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? Once more we see greedy mobile devs trying to scam PC gamers. On Steam, this is an INSANE $15 USD, on app stores, it's $6 USD. Mobile devs must learn PC gamers are not here to be gouged, and can't be expected to pay MORE THAN TWICE THE PRICE for a cheap mobile app just because it's been lazily dumped on Steam. This is unacceptable disrespect for PC gamers. Because this is a mobile app, is priced to insult and gouge PC gamers, and because of the other defects, it's impossible to recommend. For comparison, the $15 asking price for this game could get you games like "Deep Rock Galactic", "The Elder Scrolls Online" or "Prey". FIFTEEN BUCKS FOR A MOBILE APP. Just who do they think we are?
