A crazy platformer with a touch of RPG and tons of quirky but challenging things! Lovely hand-drawn-looking graphics, for a world crowded with funny creatures and bizarre weapons. Join Rufus, the antihero with broom and bucket, on his absurd journey.

I finally gave this game a try. I hope it can be called a decent try, but I've finished not even a half of it. It is decent in the very beginning but very fast becoming clunky (pun intended) and then - frustrating. Level design is really poor, all the difficulty is focused on player not being able to see the threats and stuff... You need to jump down? Here is a mob or spike right where you will lend. Need to jump over something? Here is an invisible mine behind textures or mine that you couldn't see because it was too far. And it becomes worse with each obtained skill (double jump and dash makes it 98% chance that you will hit into something that was beyond the sight). As well as if anything is hidden - that means that you simply can't see that (secret rooms, hidden passages, loot). You just have to check behind textures, jumping into all walls and so on. That is boring. The combat is simply blant. With new weapons it doesn't become better, maybe just faster... Bosses are stupid, hit boxes not clear... Story and humor is Ok, but the longer you play - the less it becomes appealing... In short: Even while I hadn't any inflated expectations - the quality of the game, the fun it can give, is way below the what is needed to even beat half of it. The game is simply frustrating.
"Clunky Hero" might be referring to how this game is a clunky experience. The game's visuals seem good from the trailer, but The enemy design looks terrible. They have no personality and either just stand there or bombard you unfairly. The humor is completely unfunny and crude. Just because you reference current day memes and events doesn't mean it's suddenly comedy gold; it just comes across as poor writing here. The level design is that of a cheap mobile game trying to position itself as a modern masterpiece. It is a blocky mess of tile arrangements in the first few areas alone. Can't bother to go past the forest because of how terrible this game starts off. Don't bother with this one if you want a good metroidvania experience.
One of the worst metroidvanias I've ever played, and I've played well over a hundred of them. Bad combat, bad hitboxes, bad level design filled with tiny corridors packed with enemies you can't avoid. The combat is so boring you just end up damage boosting through many of the enemies, especially as the game goes on, as there's simply no reason to fight them. The writing is absolutely atrocious. Forgettable music. Your character is *profoundly* unlikable. Even though it looks terrible, it also runs terrible (I don't have a dedicated GPU right now). It's so, so, so bad. Sorry devs, if you're reading this... but this game misses the mark in every single possible way.
Excelente metroidvania.
CH is one of those games I shouldn’t play based on the reviews I’ve read but I wanted to despite all the odds. With the game complete now, I can say it was worth playing but some of the issues soured me on the experience, especially near the end. The game is a metroidvania with a few twists. It doesn’t have maps by default. You find one in the dungeon section you are currently exploring and then use it to reveal the map permanently for that section. The games focuses a lot on dark humor, fourth breaking wall and some adult jokes too. It’s from the perspective of a grumpy dude who is out of touch with social media. Oh, and the game doesn’t hold back on punishing you. If you die, and you will often, nothing is spared. The game will happily make you go through everything again. The game is not necessarily difficult but it forces a very patient approach instead of running through the dungeons like a headless chicken. The feel of that reminds me of Souls games a bit. CH’s twists make the game unique in a good way. While I normally enjoy having maps by default, it has to be said that it was fun exploring the unknown until finding a map. The special abilities and bonus passives are well thought out, they all have their uses. The game is very good with keeping track of how many secrets you found, the enemies you encountered, what you have left etc. Likewise, it’s great that the game keeps track of all the 16 quests you can do by telling you where the quest givers are and where you’re supposed to go for the quests. The patient approach of gameplay can be very rewarding and lots of dialogues were enjoyable to read. The achievements are fair, fun and addictive. Most of them involve killing normal enemies 10 times, you will easily achieve this. The rest of the achievements are collect everything, do all the quests and find all the 35 secrets. The last one will be the most annoying if you’re not keeping track of the secrets you’ve found when you miss a couple near the end. It took me over 17 hours to 100% the game. My one major issue is the lack of any means to return to the main hub quickly. Usually, each dungeon has 4-5 big sections while there is only one fast travel point for each dungeon. This means that you have to walk A LOT to leave a dungeon once you’re done with your business or you have side quests to do. Let’s say the teleporter is in section 3 and you just finished section 5, now you have to walk all the way back to section 3 in order to leave the dungeon. This is way too excessive and tedious. A simple consumable teleporter you buy from shops could have easily solved this problem. Make it rare or expensive if you’re hellbent on keeping the challenge but having that option in some form feels like a must. Then you have the disappointment that is the last dungeon. I understand that being the last means the challenge needs to be the greatest, but I would have liked a better way of achieving this instead of relying on more cheap tricks. The way to get over that dungeon was just stocking up on lots of healing items and use them for every unexpected situation. And lastly, having a tedious quest after beating the final boss felt like a slap in the face. I get the joke and the intention behind it but remember what I told you about not being able to teleport quickly. There should have been a better way to do this inside the final dungeon instead of leaving the dungeon and going on a fetch quest. All of this combined leads to a more limited appeal. The game could have been far more enjoyable with a couple of minor tweaks. Still, what we got is worth playing if you’re the patient type and you don’t mind a bit challenge with unexpected deaths. I’ve bought CH with the last Steam sale for €2,24 and it was good that I got my curiosity out of the way.
Clunky Hero is a 2D side-scrolling adventure that blends light Metroidvania structure with RPG elements and a strong emphasis on self-aware comedy. Developed and published by Chaosmonger Studio, the game introduces players to Rufus, an awkward, bucket-helmeted hero whose quest to rescue his kidnapped wife quickly spirals into a deliberately ridiculous fantasy journey. From the outset, the game makes it clear that it values humor and personality just as much as mechanics, leaning into parody, exaggerated characters, and frequent fourth-wall breaks to establish a tone that is playful, irreverent, and intentionally unpolished. Exploration forms the backbone of the experience, with interconnected areas gradually opening up as Rufus gains new abilities. Classic movement upgrades such as double jumps, wall interactions, and ranged attacks allow players to revisit earlier locations and access previously unreachable paths. This sense of progression is familiar and comfortable for fans of the genre, offering moments of satisfaction when a newly unlocked skill reveals hidden secrets or side objectives. However, the world design tends to be more segmented than seamless, and navigation can feel awkward at times due to a tight camera and reliance on collectible maps to properly understand each region’s layout. While the structure encourages backtracking, it occasionally lacks the elegant flow found in more refined Metroidvania titles. Combat in Clunky Hero is straightforward and accessible, emphasizing simplicity over depth. Rufus dispatches enemies with basic melee attacks and limited ranged options, and most encounters are resolved quickly without demanding much strategic thought. Boss fights introduce more visual flair and slightly increased challenge, but they often rely on repetitive patterns rather than complex mechanics. At times, imprecise hit detection and uneven difficulty can make combat feel less satisfying than intended, especially during platforming-heavy sections where awkward enemy placement or environmental obstacles disrupt momentum rather than enhance challenge. The game’s humor is its most distinctive feature and also its most divisive. Dialogue frequently breaks immersion by acknowledging game tropes, poking fun at its own design, or delivering intentionally crude jokes. For players who enjoy meta-humor and parody, this approach can add charm and memorability to the experience, giving even mundane side quests a sense of personality. For others, the jokes may feel overused or poorly timed, occasionally undercutting emotional investment in the world and characters. The narrative itself is deliberately thin, serving mainly as a framework for gags and exploration rather than a source of genuine drama or character development. Visually, Clunky Hero stands out with its hand-drawn art style and colorful fantasy environments. Each area has a distinct look, from lush forests to gloomy caves, and the exaggerated character designs reinforce the game’s comedic tone. While animations can be stiff and environmental details sometimes feel sparse, the overall presentation is cohesive and expressive. The soundtrack complements this style with upbeat and atmospheric tracks that support exploration without overpowering it, though some sound effects and voice clips may wear thin over extended play sessions. Overall, Clunky Hero is a game driven more by attitude and charm than mechanical sophistication. It offers a recognizable Metroidvania framework enriched with light RPG elements and a heavy dose of humor, but it rarely pushes its systems to their full potential. Players seeking tight combat, precise platforming, or deeply interconnected world design may find it lacking polish and depth. Those who are willing to embrace its clunky edges, enjoy tongue-in-cheek storytelling, and appreciate a laid-back, comedic take on the genre will find an experience that, while imperfect, is sincere in its intent and memorable in its personality.
