Close Combat: A Bridge too Far was my dad's favorite game when I was a kid and this let me replay one of our favorite games (he's still better at this game than me!)
Close Combat: Last Stand Arnhem is simply a solid, hardcore, nostalgic, strategy game. You really have to think things through before executing a move or plan. I highly recommended this game. if you love the Close Combat franchise.
Stressful, sometimes unfair, but is quite fun as strategy game 8/10
This is a massive overhaul of the original game. I do like it, but i like the other parts in the series better. I have this game in box, from the 90's. The steam version works much smoother, looks better and is less clunky like the old one.
Amaizing
fantastic game where decisions have consequences.
As a long-time CC2 fan, I wish I could recommend this. This is an essentially a remake of the original CC2 A Bridge Too Far & there are some genuine, much-appreciated improvements here:

The brand new strategic map is highly detailed & adds a compelling layer of decision-making to the Campaign
Some of the worst bugs of the original were fixed or at least noticeably improved (most notably, units aren't freezing in place permanently much anymore)
The maps are more detailed & look better than before, and we have more of them
Some good gameplay tweaks introduced which enhance the realism AND Balance (rifles & machine guns are more accurately lethal, soldiers crawling fatigue much faster)
Unfortunately, the improvements are overshadowed by the new issues:

No real support for high resolution displays (even on 1080p, expect to have to lower your display resolution so the game doesn't look tiny). The original CC2 released in 1997 handles 1080p displays better!
The AI just can't seem to handle these new larger maps at all. They are consistently either too passive or will commit their entire force to suicidal crawls across your kill zones. While the CC Series has never had competent AI, it was still capable of producing nail-biting close matches in the original CC2, at least partially thanks to maps that better scaled with its performance.
CC2 nailed what the interface for the CC series should look like & it's a shame every game after that has refused to re-use it.
Mortars now reload at a faster rate (more realistic) but have no targeting delays and high accuracy - so now they are unrealistically overpowered and diminish the tactical infantry component of the game. For best results, limit yourself to maximum one mortar unit.
The ability to see & freely edit the enemy AI's units BEFORE battle really diminishes my immersion; you can argue about sandboxes but the origical CC2 had enough confidence in itself to let the AI choose its units and only let you see what they deployed AFTER a battle.
tl;dr: This remake is much better suited for multiplayer vs real humans at the expense of a much worse single-player experience compared to the original. Unfortunately, the CC series has a very small online playerbase so unless you have a lot of close friends who are also into CC, do yourself a favor and consider the original Close Combat 2: A Bridge Too Far from GOG instead.
Slitherine, please sell the CC license to talented devs and give the chance for serious remakes. A Bridge Too Far is still the reference of the series. All Slitherine did was some lousy Battle of the Bulge mods with just a few enhancements and mainly downgrades from the original series. The Slitherine games feel like heavily overpriced mods done by absolute amateurs and amateur is still way better than reality. All the CC installments are not even 3$ worth in total. Total disappointment and disgrace for fans of the original franchise. Gateway to Caen is by far the worst mod, just lousy and even unstable. Last Stand Arnhem is simply unbearable
It is a fairly faithful recreation of the original: Close Combat: A Bridge too Far. The nostalgia factor alone means this will be a biased review but I am having great fun revisiting this style of game.
THIS IS THE GAME!
