Spore if it was Lemmings.
READ THE FULL REVIEW (Steam has a word limit) HERE: https://gemsimov.com/game-reviews/f/clones-%7C-a-review -- Simple review details - I rank games on an out of 10 basis, granting up to 3 points in 3 categories, as well as a last, single point from my own self, depending on my experience with it. GAMEPLAY Clones is a puzzle game so reminiscent of Lemmings, that it is almost Lemmings. In it, the Player guides creatures through levels filled with hazards and objects. The key mechanic involves morphing individual clones to perform various actions and managing their activities. The game's complexity arises from diverse terrain types, beneficial and detrimental objects, a limited number of clones, a limited number of possible morphings, and the neat inclusion of Qdots (collectibles) for added challenge. Despite its potential complexity, the game is designed for children, offering solutions within each level. Oddly enough, it also features a battle mode for competition, in which whoever gets through a level faster wins, which does not strike me as very coherent with the way a child would play a puzzle game. While Clones presents cool puzzles and a level editor, it is marred by bugs and peculiar design choices. Overall, it earns praise as a Lemmings-inspired game. 2/3 PRESENTATION Clones is a 2D side-scrolling(-ish) game with similarities to Lemmings, displaying high visual fidelity and intricate details. It is coloful and very inoffesnive, perfect for kids. It even features a number of odd choices that can only be explained as being there for children, such as completely irrelevant animations that introduce cetain entities (that have no bearing on anything) in a manner rmeiniscent of a fighting game intro. Despite its child-friendly content, the user interface appears complex and counterintuitive. The tutorial introduces concepts coherently, but lacks polish, overlooking elements like the pause button. The game's sound effects and music exhibit issues, with a peculiar imbalance in volume between ears. Despite numerous faults, Clones maintains a certain charm that slightly elevates its overall appeal. 2/3 STORY Aside fom a very loose premise, Clones has no story. 0/3 Legendary Point Does this game get the legendary point, so craved and wanted by all and none at the same time? No, Clones does not get it, no matter how funky the level editor is. 0/1 CONCLUSION 4/10. I said it would get the Lemmings score, and it did get the Lemmings score. It's an amazing game for children, and for folks who like to solve puzzles. It'd also be great for older folks, to keep their brains working and perhaps help stave off some of those terrible things that threaten mankind. I will, however, put it in the bag of mediocrity, for there is dust to be gathered. -- READ THE FULL REVIEW (Steam has a word limit) HERE: https://gemsimov.com/game-reviews/f/clones-%7C-a-review
Clones is a puzzle and strategy game developed and published by Tomkorp Computer Solutions Inc. that successfully revives the spirit of classic indirect-control puzzle games while introducing enough original ideas to stand on its own. At first glance, its colorful visuals and adorable alien-like creatures suggest a lighthearted experience, but beneath the charming presentation lies a surprisingly deep and rewarding game built around careful planning, experimentation, and problem-solving. The game takes inspiration from genre classics yet expands the formula with new abilities, multiplayer features, and extensive customization tools that greatly increase its appeal. The central objective revolves around guiding groups of creatures known as Clones through dangerous environments filled with traps, obstacles, and environmental hazards. Rather than controlling each character directly, players influence their behavior by assigning special abilities that allow them to overcome challenges and reach designated goals. This indirect control system creates a unique style of gameplay where success depends more on strategy and foresight than quick reflexes. Every stage presents a new puzzle to solve, and the growing variety of abilities ensures that the gameplay remains engaging throughout the lengthy campaign. One of the game's strongest qualities is its level design. The campaign contains a large number of stages that steadily introduce new mechanics and complications without overwhelming the player. Early puzzles serve as effective tutorials, while later levels become increasingly complex and demand creative solutions. The game encourages experimentation, rewarding players who learn how different Clone abilities interact with each other and with the environment. Many puzzles can be approached in multiple ways, which adds a satisfying sense of discovery and replay value. The visual style is simple but effective. The Clones themselves are expressive and memorable, while the environments are bright and colorful without becoming cluttered. This clarity is important in a puzzle game where players need to quickly understand what is happening on screen. Animations are smooth and informative, helping players track the actions of numerous characters at once. The cheerful art direction gives the game a welcoming atmosphere that contrasts nicely with some of its more challenging puzzles. Beyond the single-player content, Clones distinguishes itself through an unusually ambitious multiplayer component. Competitive and cooperative modes add a completely different dimension to the experience. Instead of merely solving puzzles alone, players can challenge others in strategic matches or work together toward common objectives. The multiplayer systems demonstrate a level of depth that was uncommon among puzzle-focused independent games of its time. Although the online community is no longer as active as it once was, the inclusion of these features significantly enhances the game's overall value. Another major attraction is the powerful level editor. Players are not limited to the official campaign, as the game provides the tools necessary to create custom puzzles and maps. This feature greatly extends longevity and encourages creativity within the community. The editor is robust enough that the developers themselves used similar tools to build the game's own content, which speaks highly of its flexibility and usefulness. For players who enjoy designing challenges as much as solving them, this aspect alone can provide countless additional hours of entertainment. The game is not entirely free from shortcomings. Some later puzzles may frustrate players due to precise timing requirements or solutions that are not immediately obvious. Newcomers unfamiliar with indirect-control puzzle games may also need some time to adapt to the mechanics. However, these issues are largely a consequence of the game's complexity rather than poor design, and patient players are likely to find the challenge rewarding rather than unfair. What makes Clones particularly memorable is how successfully it balances accessibility with depth. It captures the charm and strategic thinking of classic puzzle games while introducing enough modern features to feel fresh. The extensive campaign, varied gameplay mechanics, multiplayer options, and content creation tools combine to create a package that offers remarkable value for puzzle enthusiasts. Even years after its original release, Clones remains an underrated title that deserves more recognition. Its thoughtful level design, engaging mechanics, and commitment to player creativity make it a standout example of independent game development. Players looking for a challenging yet charming puzzle experience will find plenty to appreciate in this inventive adventure. Rating: 7/10
Can't start the game. Changed my monitor's brightness settings, now my screen brighter. Restarted the PC, still didn't fix. Had to manually decrease the brightness. EDIT (08.11.2023): Just noticed, this game also moved the screen a few pixels left, there is black bar on the right side lol.
