This game was a trip. Clarevoyance is a visual novel with light resource management elements set in the Acadian municipality of Clare in Nova Scotia. The images in the game are all taken in the region and all dialogue is voiced by locals in Acadian French with English subtitles. I am from New Brunswick originally so it sounds pretty nostalgic. You play as someone visiting relatives in Clare over the summer. As you travel around doing different activities and "spinning yarns" with the locals, you start to realize that things are not quite as they seem. The story incorporates local legends in a way that was pretty clever and fun. The resource management portion involves earning money, buying food and managing your "well being", a sort of HP gauge that decreases when you use your powers to interact with the local mythology and increases when you do certain fun activities. There is also a time system where activities use up certain amounts of time in a day, and some things can only be done at specific times of day. There isn't a time limit though so you can take as long as you want to proceed through the story. For any achievement hunters following me, a couple of the achievements didn't pop properly for me, but for anyone else I would recommend this charming game.
Oui ? Alors on y va ! Wonderful wormhole into specific community. Every character is portrayed and voiced by someone from neighbourhood in technically simple (photos), artistically maybe naive (non-actors) way, but with totally disarming spontaneity and passion for the thing. Game mostly consist of you discovering local folklore and legends and unearthing bigger mystery behind them - and it's engrossing! Clare is a place brimming with fascinating stories, told by locals with crunchy zest (and pretty cool accent). It is a place with heavyweight genius loci and Clarevoyance is beautiful invitation to sample it.
I do like the nostalgia of being back in Southwestern Nova Scotia. It's kind of neat with the folklore twist and the questing. I appreciate the history that's shared. I have told my kids about various bits of history from back home like Samuel de Champlain and the Expulsion. I showed them the Clare Lore that backs up the thing I knew. There's so much more I didn't know or forgot from 6th grade social studies class One thing I wish were better, some scenes are pretty laggy. I'm kind of surprised given the simple layout of the game. I did recommend it to some friends back home. The PI's office reminds me of the Club Sociale. Went there 21 years go various weekends with some friends from Burridge Campus. I rather enjoy the Rappie Pie references and Frenchy's of all places. Some things gave me a hearty chuckle... and yet, some things struck a sad chord with me, how all the young folks move away (I'm one). The quest with Eli is what I'm talking about specifically. It reminds me of Quiet Parade's "Edge of the Ocean". My heart...
A little rough around the edges, but worth playing.
Very nice indie point & click adventure with a cultural aim. The game is retelling myths and stories from the Acadiens, French and their decendents, that settled in Acadia in North-America, a region that is today mainly part of Eastern Canada's Maritime provinces (Novia Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island). Recommended for everyone who is interested in everyday culture and is not afraid to get into a little bit of quirky gameplay and storytelling. Give it go :)
You already know if you want this game. Very accessible and user friendly, but also unstable. Be prepared to re-do lost progress.
A captivating exploration of Baie Sainte-Marie's rich folklore, this game seamlessly weaves Acadian French dialogue with local legends, brought to life by community members and enriched by local artists. It offers a unique cultural experience that immerses players in the distinct heritage of the region.
Absolutely loved this game. intriguing stories, colourful people and beautiful music set against gorgeous area landscape photography. Wish I hadn't taken so long to get around to playing this. The fiddle music from Saulnierville has been stuck in my head for days now. Clarevoyance was a delightful way to experience a part of Nova Scotia culture I haven't had the chance to appreciate before. The use of the mythical glitches gave the game a Twin Peaks vibe, but a much more friendly one.
