The game is undeniably good. The visuals are very nice and diverse and the musical score is very good as well. The gameplay is an improved turn-based JRPG, where you can actively dodge or parry enemy attacks. While other JRPGs allow intricate combinations of attacks with several characters, in Clair Obscure, you stack damage increases as Lumina or Pictos on characters. There are some interaction in combat beween characters, but it is very minor. For example a character can put burn on an enemy, so the other character deals 25% more damage, with the right Lumina/Pictos active. A lot of the time this results in going solo, killing off your other characters at the start of the battle, so your main damage dealer gets ludicous damage increase modifiers. It doesn't really feel like a party of heroes anymore in combat. Especially since from the five available character only three can be used in combat, while the other two are standing by... You also want to master the parry mechanics in the game, as it is arguably too important a mechanic, not only do you negate the incoming damage, you also counterattack, which can be rather powerful. I am not a huge JRPG fan so I struggled to like the gameplay at the start, but I grew content by the end of the game. The world design is actually rather weird. If you just follow the main story, you will fine, but struggle severely in some fights. If you explore the world available to you at any given time, you will turn out overpowered for the story. And then there are areas you expect to be side content for your current level, but you get completely crushed, not even able to dent the HP bar of the enemies. Usually these areas are marked as "Danger" but on the world map itself, encounters are not distinguishable if they are a challenge, a pushover, or sucide. Act 1 and Act 2 are ok in that regard, but in Act 3 the pacing of the game falls apart, as you suddenly have access to all content of the game and everywhere you go you get crushed, until you find one or two areas that allow you to get stronger. It was not that great. Finally, the story. Act 1 was amazing. I thouroughly enjoyed it. Act 2 was ok, but there were several irritating elements and I felt as thought some characters were written much better then others.
Verso was annoying, Maelle was always crying and Monoco was just there. If he was suddenly gone, I wouldn't have realized.
Act 3 was worse.
Verso was now just emotional baggage and Monoco was still irrelevant. Maelle became better..... until the very end of the game. Then you have two choices: fake ending and sad ending. Personally... I feel a satisfying ending would have been nicer....
There are many games that had a story that truly gripped me and I was emotionally struck when the game was over. Clair Obscure: Expedition 33 was not one of these games. If the writing had stayed at the level of act 1, maybe...
I don't understand the hype Games are meant to be played and the gameplay in this title is excruciatingly shallow. Parry everything and win. Walk a few seconds, encounter enemies, parry everything and win. Now do it again in a different environment. Oh and that environment absolutely doesn't matter, it's merely a visual, it doesn't affect your abilities actively nor passively Add to that the story which does take its time with exposure and loves to throw twists at you. Twists are cheap, predictable, and after some time they become very annoying. Oh, these things happened, this is built, now throw it away because this and that. Repeat 17 times. In a world where lorebuilding relies entirely on the story, where notes and clues are few and far between and describe what we saw 10 seconds ago as if we were primary school kids. There's just no incentive to explore the world. After very few encounters you will absolutely be speedrunning the game and try to avoid every encounter you can just to be done with this thing The world, the continent. I guess in retrospect it's a metaphor for something, and sure if you're anal enough to study it you will have a field day. If you care enough about the story and its characters, that is. Just beware the nonexistent movement tech, truly poor performance compared to visual quality, very harsh artefacting and lighting system. It's Unreal Engine slop and it shows too often to be overlooked and tossed away Game is a 5/10 - not even an inspired if predictable story can save shallow gameplay and Unreal Engine induced unwillingness to care about your PC. It's unfortunate. Big potential, wasted
