About
Once a year, the Paintress wakes and paints upon her monolith. Paints her cursed number. And everyone past that age turns to smoke and fades away. Year by year, that number ticks down and more of us are erased. Tomorrow she’ll wake and paint “33.” And tomorrow we depart on our final mission - Destroy the Paintress, so she can never paint death again.

Reviews
Never thought I would like a turnbased game, but man this feels good! Stunning game, addictive gameplay and a really compelling story so far.

Got this game hoping for it to be a masterpiece worthy of the game of the year, instead I found this game extremely disappointing in almost every regard. I think I played it longer than I should have because I just kept thinking "come on, its got to get better at some point, right? people are fanatical about this game." It has great music but beyond that it is incredibly superficial in both art direction and game mechanics. You are in a world fighting a big baddie called the paintress, but the art direction doesnt go further than bright pretty colours, the same geometric blobs and spooky masks. No investigation of different art styles, ideas or themes. The central game mechanic becomes tiresome and rote very quickly, and you are bombarded with completely ignorable upgrades, weapons and skills. Very little seems to matter. The in game rewards don't seem to matter. The battles don't seem to matter. The story doesn't seem to matter. The characters don't seem to matter or even want to be there.
(NO SPOILERS) mostly everything in this game is fantastic. the writing, the characters, the environments, the art... and the music, which is just like totally insane for a video game IMO (in the best way!) amazing work most of the gameplay rules, most of the skills are fun to build around, the whole thing punches so far above its budget it's pretty insane! "expectations matched" based on hype for sure two real gripes. one: the menuing and overworld UX are rough. which is wild, because a JRPG is mostly menuing, so shipping with menus that fight you is kind of a foundational miss. it looks gorgeous while it does it, but pretty doesn't fix the part where you're wrestling the interface to interact with the systems you actually like. the Pictos setup is a great system trapped behind an interaction layer that isn't pulling its weight. two: it gets samey around the 15-20 hour mark. and i want to be precise about this, because "repetitive RPG" is a lazy complaint and that's not what i mean. an ARPG earns its repetition, the loop itself is the reward, you blast at 1000% speed and the numbers do the work. E33 can't hide in speed. the combat is a timing game, every fight wants your full attention, so when the new-mechanic drip slows down there's nothing to melt into. the parry that felt incredible at hour 5 is just the tax by hour 30. but, as a rhythm game fiend, fun! still an easy recommend. i just wanted more of the front half than the back half gave me. (even more samey) still slotting it into my top 20 of all time probably
