Interrogate, investigate, and judge in an authoritarian regime. In Civil Purgatory, real-time AI-generated role-playing dialogue adds depth and dynamism to this narrative simulation full of moral dilemmas, where you decide who walks free… and who doesn’t.

The concept is great, but the execution is not great. The AI works really well to give life to the person you are interrogating. There are some grammatical errors here and there, but otherwise it works very seamlessly and I found that to be engaging and impressive. The rest of the game, however, needs some amount of overhaul. The instructions are completely confusing. I won't get too much into the details, but unlike "Papers, Please," the rules are not consistent and are all over the place. It appears each religion has its own particular forbidden thing that you must seek out, but that doesn't make too much sense. Why would all religions have a different forbidden aspect, instead of just outright forbidding a single religion? After my first day, I got a 0/10 on every parameter for my interrogation. I have no earthly idea how to earn even a single point in these areas. If you don't get graded well after an interrogation, you get little or in my case zero XP. That means you get no money after your shift is done. Like "Papers, Please," you have a family with expenses, but this is clumsily implemented. Without very clear goals, I felt unable to succeed in the interrogation to get a good grade, and thus XP and money for my family. The developer had stated "this is a roleplay game," which he should have stuck to. No other mechanics of grading on arbitrary parameters, or XP, or money for my family. It should have stuck to the thing the game was strongest in, which is the interrogation itself with an AI. This was the strongest part of the game, and I truly did find it engaging. But when I discovered not only do I suck at interrogating (by my supervisor's arbitrary, unknowable parameters), I will also fail at the game because money is involved and I'm not earning any. That took the wind straight out of my sails. The XP, grading, and money aspects of the game should ONLY be implemented if the instructions for a perfect interrogation are clearly communicated. This is not the case here. With an AI game, you do need to be a little forgiving when interacting with the AI, but I found it also confusing as to why was the prisoner even arrested? As far as I can tell, I'm not able to inspect his belongings. I saw his passport once, but am told he has another, yet I see no evidence of that. I also somehow lost his first passport after looking at it. Again, not dialed in mechanics. Not clear. I have some minor complaints as well as to the User Interface. The text boxes are too tiny for so many lines of text you must read. These should be customizable, or at least much larger and wider. There should be also more clarity for what you can interact with, and what purpose each thing has. I feel like the game can be salvaged, but it needs some serious consideration as to how the player is supposed to interact with the game. "Papers, Please" was very clear and concise in its instructions. This game is arbitrary and all over the place. Too many instructions that don't make a lot of sense.
I bought this game on release day and , to be honest, I was a little underwhelmed. Since then, there have been a few updates and bug fixes which renewed my interest in playing and I'm glad I went back to it. First of all, I love the retro art style. The catchy music is a jaunty contrast to the gloomy setting and subject matter. There's an element of realism when the officer ends his work day and sees his mediocre salary eaten up by bills with no hope of even buying a little treat for himself at the in game shop. A true Art imitating life moment in today's harsh economic climate. When reviewing each case, you can question the suspect, call up a lieutenant to conduct property searches, background checks and even arrange covert surveillance operations. You can also call up embassies representing four of the state provinces. The embassies are very helpful for verifying the authenticity of documents such as passports or birth certificates. The suspect will have a number of items on their person which you can inspect and you have the chance to "set aside" some of these to sell on later and boost that low income. Every job has perks if you know where to look. The AI questioning system is amazing and there are some helpful prompts in the dialogue if you are unsure how to proceed or what direction to take your investigation but being relatively skilled in reading and comprehension does help a lot. There is a lot of reading as the previous conversations are there for you to scroll through when you need to but the sheer depth of these investgations and the web of connections is very impressive. I like to keep a little notepad by me to take quick notes but this isnt necessary. I was not recieving any xp despite being graded an 8/10 on my appraisal. I assumed this was how the game worked and was disappointed. Upon mentioning this to the developer, he knew it was a bug and had it fixed within the hour and now I'm earning xp and able to rank up and progress through the game. Lovers of puzzle games would enjoy this immensely.
The game´s concept is amazing. But I have 80 mins of playtime of just waiting for someone to show up. Is just the whole day (in the game) with the "someone is coming up, please wait". I havent judged 1 single person.
It just doesn't work
