Hooked on my first session. A fantastic blend of macro and micro management and the controls for steam deck are great! The tycoon mechanics are way more flushed out here and learning how the different staff worked was always a joy. Studio Director, my Beloved. This game does start out heavy on the micro then becomes an automators dream come true where you have 56 workhorse studios all pumping out slop that the masses love while you sit at home adding 1 new mechanic to an Open Source Engine and then the fans pay you Millions just cuz you did the community a solid. God I love this game. Historical mode was very fun and challenging! I absolutely loved failing and learning how to survive the video game crash of 83 and making it to the gameboy era and making ABSOLUTE BANK. A little buggy; some text gets cut off, very small font size on steam deck, light mode is always on, but otherwise pleasant experience. Maybe just runs a little better on steam os? The tutorial is very helpful and the level of difficulty customization is such a great thing; skip to a certain year to play around with modern hardware, expand the amount of rival companies, sandbox mode. This game is a wonderful roguelike tycoon and I highly recommend anyone who enjoys tycoon games as well as video game history to give it a shot! A wonderful love letter to the industry that lets YOU be Valve, EA, or Bethesda. The choice is yours.
Rating this game is somewhat difficult because it's not my first game development management game. I started with Game Dev Tycoon a decade ago and since then also played both Mad Games Tycoon games. City Game Studio came out somewhere in between MGT 1 and 2 and went completely under my radar. It follows the same principles as GDT and MGT and in terms of complexity is somewhere in between both. You start as a small one man show to create profitable games and become successful in the business to basically become Electronic Arts and destroy the competition... You can gather data from the creation of your games while playing through the game and carry it over to repeat playthroughs. The start turns into a basic grind of creating a lot small games and then push them out the door. Port games to new platforms, fullfil contracts and unlock new tech to make more advanced games. Later down the road you can then create additional studios that can basically be automated to make games, updates or ports. You can build consoles and create your own version of Steam. The game definitely has its flaws as in a lot of aspects it gets very tedious and grindy and the management can get annoying. Some aspects also seem entirely useless. I haven't really used universities to train the staff because usually they just get better by working on games and managing the training feels very clunky and requires me to dish out a lot of money to build a university in the first place. Why are there no existing schools where I can use to train my staff? No idea but it's one of the aspects where CGS feels off. Visually it's simple and works okay. However if you for example include an event of adopting a cat for the studio then at least have a cat running around in the studio. Otherwise it feels kinda pointless. I hope that makes it clear though that there are a lot of limitations with the graphics. In any way on sale it can be fun for a bit, but I think Mad Games Tycoon 2 would be the better alternative.
I keep coming back because the developer genuinely cares about the community and takes player feedback seriously. Their dedication to improving the game and making it the best it can be really shows. There's a ton of replayability, regular updates, and new features being added all the time. If you enjoy game development management/simulation games, this is an easy recommendation. Definitely one of my favorites in the genre!
I really like this game and appreciate the developer continuing to release free updates all these years! Also, I'm a fellow Godot developer so I'm a little biased. Would love to see this become a rock solid sim tycoon game. There are a fair bit of bugs when playing through the game as-is. It's fun, the design and art are great, and the feature set is impressive, as far as what the game helps you imagine you're doing. I got a great feeling whenever a game I released would be a smash hit. All the different avenues to running a game studio offer a ton of flexibility on your path to success. The main things holding this game back for me are the UI, and the bugs. The UI is laid out OK but some panels/menus you interact with are frustrating to use. Specifically the rightmost panel where you see your current games for sale. I would appreciate a full screen menu for all of that information. Bugs, well it's mostly UI stuff and difficulty stuff. For example, my workers sometimes would get free vacation while time is paused, the sorting of studios in the stock market screen is broken. Most of the bugs I saw were so small I can't even remember them but usually interface things, not game breaking bugs. Which is why I still recommend this game, and I had a good time. It felt like role playing as a game dev studio... which is what I came for.
