About
Introducing AI Roguelite, the world's first text-based RPG where every location, NPC, enemy, item, crafting recipe, and game mechanic is 100% determined by artificial intelligence.
If you've ever played other AI "games" such as AI Dungeon and were frustrated by how they didn't feel like a game, then AI Roguelite might be the perfect game for you.
AI-generated entities: What weapons might you find in an underwater city? Which enemies might you find? Where else can you go from there? All these questions are answered by an LLM, so you can explore a truly infinite world.
AI-generated crafting recipes: What item could you make if combining a wooden stick with a rock? What about a computer chip with a zombie brain? The AI decides which item should be produced, based on the names of the ingredients.
AI-generated combat: What happens when you try to attack a "terminator robot" with a "raw salmon"? Instead of traditional item stats, the success/failure of an attack depends heavily on its name and description, the AI-determined plausibility of your proposed action, and a dice roll check on your attributes and skills. The AI then generates a plausible story for what happens when you use it against the enemy. Finally, the AI is fed its own story, from which it tries to figure out whether the enemy was killed, injured, or unharmed.
AI-generated illustrations: Every entity gets an AI-generated image using either your GPU or the cloud.
New: Journey with up to four other party members — each of which can have their own stats, abilities, items, and perks — and take actions on their behalf.
Various options for text and image gen models: Choose from free cloud (works out of the box), paid cloud, custom via API (works with OpenRouter, LMStudio, etc.), and more.
Notice: This game features plausibility and dice roll checks based on your stats, skills, and story context. Actions may be blocked or fail if checks aren't met; this is intentional and not caused by AI censorship. You can bypass these mechanics at any time via options or console commands.
Notice: An optional monthly subscription is available via an in-game link, which enhances the gameplay experience by using more expensive LLMs and image generation services. This is entirely optional and does not impede the default free service in any way. The game works well out of the box with default settings and no additional cost to the player. Ensuring it continues to do so remains the highest priority.
Notice: Users in China may be blocked from official servers because China blocks all Google services. As a workaround, you can find a VPN which doesn't block Google services, or use one of the custom API options.

I really want to like this, it has so much promise, but it's unplayable to me. Every action and every dialogue is a roll. And the outcome and consequences of each roll seems completely unrelated to what the roll is. I could lie to someone and get a critical fail but they believe me. Or a critical success but they don't believe me. So since the roll itself doesn't matter, it serves no purpose. Did a mission for a faction. Turned in the quest. You would think doing a quest for a faction would be positive for that faction. Nope! Roll. And again, whatever the roll is doesn't matter to what happens. Roll great, faction is somehow hurt that you did their mission for them. Roll bad, somehow faction is helped more by doing the mission. I generated a story with competing factions, hoping I would be able to pick one I liked. The story arbitrarily assigned me to one at the start, despite me setting myself to not be aligned with any in the settings. Any attempt to leave the faction wrote the story that I was pretending to leave so I could join another faction and take them down from the inside. I even tried attacking my faction leader and declaring my intention to join another faction, and it decided to write that I was making a public spectacle so my subterfuge would be more easily believed. I'll still be keeping this on my wishlist because this seems like something that can and should be fixed, and when it is, it will probably be enjoyable. But right now there's no point to playing because the game will just do whatever.
Its a game, but not as we know it. This game is a bit different when it comes to most games, due to, the obvious AI element. When you start a game, you create the 'world' you will be playing in, as well as your character, some back history, and appearance. From these prompts, everything will be built via the AI (be it the paid version or not). What does that mean? Essentially, if you decide to have a game where your character is a classic zombie end-of-days scenario, the game will give you status bars as you would use them in such a game... that being stamina, health, maybe sanity and food/water. It also can make a infected bar, in which once it hits full, your character story ends, and they become the unliving. That means you can take anything, be it a 'Toy Story' world where you are a toy fighting humans, or a intergalactic warrior, the AI is pretty good about building a simple story. This gives you multiple different worlds and stories that you can create, and enjoy. In this respect, its a decent game and I recommend it. Negatives to be aware of: Its a AI text/prompt based game, so expect hijinx to ensue... and not in your favor. Sometimes the game will auto-kill you per story line. "Then Jeb the Necromancer tore out your soul" The game will sometimes over use the same names, throughout games. No idea why, but it can be annoying. The game will sometimes not accept that you killed a special enemy. Often making them come back like they have plot-armor. The plot can get REALLY wacky at times.
Finally writing a review and here is what I think. Out of all the other AI tools out there, which I tried them all, this one is the most stable and leaning more towards the RPG factor. Yes it isn't perfect and you do need to figure out the best way to generate your world without it being an overflow, the images are those old AI images where the person looks like melting wax and alienish, the quests are pretty easy and can give you double rewards, the prompts can also loop twice, but overall it is the most stable. Compare to Gemini AI, Co-Pilot, and any other AI based system you can find this one is the clear winner and here is why. All those other AI have very short memory and forget key details and make stuff up. At least with this one, by using the UI of the game as a baseboard, never or very rarely does that. Meaning you can have a real inventory, xp with levels, allies, combat or other interactions, and quests. Again, it isn't perfect but by the gods is it way better than the other AI systems out there because of the UI that stores all the information. This review was written by using the free settings within, you can fix a lot of the other issues I have with mods, AP links, or paying the subscription.
I use AI a lot — both professionally and personally — so it's no surprise that AI Roguelite would intrigue me enough to buy it. AIR is surprisingly fun. I played it two different ways: 1. Free Tier AI The free AI system works right out of the box and does a decent job. A few times I had to figure out how to work around something it wasn't "seeing" correctly. For example: playing the Dungeon Crawl preset, I found a room with crafting benches and tried to use them. The AI responded, "You can't perform this action. You do not have the tools needed." It seemed logical that a safe rest area with crafting benches would be stocked with tools — I actually told the AI that, and it worked. So there are workarounds for some of the less logical free tier behavior. Overall I'd rate the Free Tier AI as "very good" and had little trouble with it. 2. Custom AI Models For fun — and because I enjoy tinkering with AI — I set up a couple of different models to run AIR. First I tried KoboldCpp. The recommended Sthenos model can no longer be downloaded directly due to known Hugging Face issues, but I worked around it by using LM Studio to download the model, then pointing KoboldCpp to LM Studio's local directory that held the ai model I wanted to use. Setting up AIR to use KoboldCpp was straightforward for anyone familiar with LLMs, though it may not be obvious to newcomers. KoboldCpp performed okay but felt sluggish on Windows. I switched to LM Studio, tweaked the settings in AIR, and it ran snappy, fast, and great. I tried a couple of other models through LM Studio as well — all worked great and were easy to configure. A+ to AIR for being designed with this kind of freedom in mind. The Game Itself: I'm loving the gameplay and have tried a couple of different scenarios, including a custom one. The trick with custom scenarios is using very descriptive, specific language upfront — defining your goals, skills, magic system, and whatever else matters to your playthrough. This is even more demanding than writing a good prompt for Claude or ChatGPT, because those tools can ask clarifying questions. In AIR, you need to nail it perfectly from the start. Once your initial settings are baked into the generated universe, there's no obvious way to course-correct. My recommendation: Use an AI like Claude to help you build your prompt. Take a screenshot of the character/universe creation screen, tell Claude what you want to play, and have it generate and refine the prompts for you. This gave me the best results by far. AIR won't appeal to everyone, but if you have a gameplay experience in mind that simply doesn't exist yet, AIR may be your only option to scratch that itch. Some examples of playstyles I've explored that no other game quite delivers: A rich summoner-focused build A LitRPG-style "collector" protagonist who pursues every stat increase, blessing, and trait they can find A city thief who takes contracts, plans heists through preparation and spying, then manages payouts while navigating betrayals and power plays Those styles — and far, far more — are available in AIR, limited only by your imagination. Build your world through solid initial prompting, then enjoy watching your character thrive and survive. In Summary: AI Roguelite is a genuinely unique experience that delivers on its premise. The free tier AI works well right out of the box, and the ability to plug in your own local models via KoboldCpp or LM Studio is a standout feature that power users will love. The game shines brightest when you invest time in crafting your initial scenario — and using an external AI to help build that prompt is a pro tip worth taking seriously. If you've ever wanted to play a game that doesn't exist yet, AIR is the closest thing to making that a reality.
TLDR: Super open ended customizeable AI adventure generator. Not perfect and needs better image generation, and other improvements, but very cool framework to run your own ongoing adventures in whatever genre you'd like with things like persistent inventory, locations, and characters, all narrated by your personal AI DM. $15, are you kidding me? SUTMM The future of gaming is here. This title reminds me of historical breakthrough titles in all the right ways. I get really great old school early RPG vibes like post-Wizardry (probably is a better example from early 90's), but in AI. The images on the steam page suck, in game are much better, imo, but still inconsistent. You can run local AI Image models and get better results, and also an optional paid 'premium AI image' sub. In the dawn of AI, this provides a platform to consolidate AI text adventures, text to voice and image generation, all with a really robust set of RPG tools that allow for great, organic, immersive adventures where 'much' of it is consitently tracked and remembered.. It's f'in amazing for where we are with AI. the program provides the adventure 'backend' and tracking of stuff like stats, inventory etc all in a fairly straightforward UI. It's the things like persistent inventory, faction reputation and characters that elevate this title so far above most 'AI Text Adventure' options at the moment which forget all of that and have limited 'memory' and 'world / character' info storage. It can't always remember everything, but having a consistent inventory, characters, factions and stats really just adds that missing piece allowing the AI to turn it all into a 'game' and a massive sprawling adventure. You need to go to a certain place like a restaurant? AI generates it and the npcs, interactable objects, puts it on a map and describes it for you. NPC's move, new ones appear, they react to what you are doing. They have stats and backstory and it all changes and updates fluidly. It's not perfect, but it works with modest expectations really damn well. Enough of the right stuff is consistently saved to keep the adventure or at least world cohesive in a way. NPC memory isn't the best, but once you visit that restaurant and meet the chef, they and the restaurant will always be there and not just 'disappear' as they do in other local AI text adventures. Flexibility is great. I was thinking to myself, "I want to add a flamethrower underbarrel to my plasma rifle" so I found an armory, a weapons mod terminal, used stuff in my inventory to jury rig a flamer. Then, the item in my inventory got a new name, buffs, and a status update unlocking the 'flamer' ability for my character and the weapon. it was amazing. Then the nearby space dwarf showed curiosity in my mods, so I showed him what I did and we hit it off, so he offered to upgrade my flamer further, starting a new quest which is auto tracked... It's just so damn flexible it's amazing. I realized it was a female dwarf, but the img gen kept generating males with beards (save the debate) so with a quick update to the character description (you can easily tweak or edit tons of stuff with simple text descriptions) the rest of the conversation was with a beardless dwarf and the img generation adjusted. When the AI fails, many things have a description which you can manually update to fill the gaps, remember stuff, or just adjust the story to your liking and they will persist. Goblin has a rocket launcher and you think they should have a smaller weapon? Edit the goblin entry and give them a spear, or make sure all goblins only use primitive weapons, whatever. IT IS NOT PERFECT. Image generation, consistent TTS voice choice, and ease of setup with local models needs a lot of improvement, for example. It is hella janky from one perspective, yet also super feature full from another. I've done a lot of local homebrewed AI adventures with local programs like kobold or mods like Mantella for SkyrimVR and FO4vr. So, I am used to the current AI issues like bad memory, waffling, player agency, repetition an so forth... I expect that in current gen AI adventures, period.... So I understand that smaller models and a lot of AI in general is limited and has issues.... so, that needs to be expected going in. You won't get a perfect experience where every picture is perfect and the NPC's remember every detail. Plot lines will change, NPC's will forget stuff, you WILL have AI quirks, constantly, especially with poor image generation. BUT! That said, the framework it provides to bring it all together is where all the magic happens. It reminds me of a single player old school RPG / Text adventure with the flexibility of GURPS. Any class, any setting, any situation... if you can imagine it, you can adventure it, endlessly. That's the gold here. Pirates? Sure... Space Pirates? sure! Ice Pirates? even better. (I don't have experience playing from a specific IP like 'One Piece' universe so ymmv and keep expectations modest if you want a 'specific established world and characters'. I'm not certain the AI will have 'watched' all the episodes of whatever show.) The program natively takes care of what often takes 2-3 programs and adds so much more. Story gen, image gen, TTS. Then it generates factions, places items events... everything you need for any type of endless adventure.
It was already amazing when i bought it, and every update keeps adding so much more. Worth every dollar
I was excited to play this game, but after 2 hours of trying to get it to use my API key from Gemini via Open Router, I gave up and requested a refund. This is not cutting edge technology and if you build a game that runs on AI, then it should work with services like Gemini or ChatGPT, but it doesn't, which leaves the player either using the developer's free version, which I read is pretty limited, or pay the developer monthly to use their AI service. No thanks.
There is a decided lack of any player agency in the game with the AI deciding that you take actions that you specifically rule out in previous decisions or poses. In adventure mode with no permadeth this can lead to an endless loop of similar versions of the same scene that are impossible to escape.
