EDIT: I'm updating my review after a patch than change a lot the whole balancement of the game. I would say than Child of Ault for my eyes is almost twice as good as before. Now your units are very effective, you can cast many of them (before they go and die soon, so slingshot was the only afforbable way to combat) and I'm experimenting mixing tanks and long range units. Slingshot is still useful, but not as much as before. With this change I was able to progress more in the game, and there are quite nice environments later. Can't say the overall lenght (the difficulty jumped out after a while), from the map doens't seems huge but not sure if it's the only map avaliable, if something drive you to replay previous locations as any of them has a star ranking. In any case, very promising improvements. Nice feedback too, it's ever a good thing when a dev listen to users. --- At the moment is missing a review of this game in english, and the description itself is not very clear about contents. Child of Ault is a tower defense game, with the classical slingshot fighting seen in other games, but with some differences: 1) your shots could use mana to cast magic; 2) you can summon character to defense your tower; 3) you've a map with lot of locations to beat during the campaign; 4) you're going to grow unlocking new spells and summon; 5) the game try to add a story and some characters; 6) there are sort of boss fights. All those elements are interesting, in my opinion. Unfortunately in game strategy weights 20% where slingshots is 80%, and as an action game is not good enough to stay close to QuiVR or archery in The Lab. That said, Child of Ault is not a bad product (at least for VR standards) and delivers some variety and contents. With more strategy I would be way more happier, but could be a game to consider if you like this kind, maybe discounted.
Game starts and some 'uncle' walks in what I presume to be his house and tells me he's going to give me a poo on my magic report card unless I do better?? Tower defense in VR good for kids, ok graphically but boring as an uncle taking a ♥♥♥♥ on your report card in whatever country this dev is from. Also in that country they have hands the wrong way round, so in a country with hands the wrong way round and uncles taking dumps on report cards this may be a good game. Here not so much.
Im not a big fan of tower defense games in general, but this was a pleasant surprise. The game play is rather unique, and works quite well. You have a good variety of defensive structures and unique units (toys) to your disposal and is able to participate in the defense in person as well. At first glance this appears to be a "kids only" game with a cartoony world, toys and a wizard uncle. But its actually turns out to contain challenging tactical battles along the road. The story, dialogue and voice acting is not much to look forward to, but the game play is great.
Child of Ault definitely has a charm to it: maybe it's the whimsical music, or fairly well-designed cartoony environments. However, there is no polish here at all. I can't recommend this game for its many flaws and obnoxious dialogue and voice acting. I completed the game in about 2 and a half hours in two sittings, and didn't particularly enjoy it past the first half. The instructions are confusing, and new mechanics are often thrown in seconds before they are needed to avoid death, particularly during long boss battles. This resulted in dozens of respawns where I had no idea what had happened, and had to die a few more times in order to figure it out. While this might be endearing to a 'hardcore' style of game, it only amounted to frustration and confusion. The system of both spawning creatures and firing your bow-like staff was what drew me in. While it provided some degree of entertainment, the game just wasn't difficult enough (outside of the randomness mentioned above) to make full use of these mechanics.
Child of Ault is what you would get when you turn mobile app tower defence games into a VR game though plays a combination of a tower defence game and Longbow from "The Lab". Its a little confusing at first and doesnt do a great job of explaining what you are supposed to be doing but I picked it up pretty fast. This may or may not be due to the fact it's been translated from Chinese to English and that the voice over acting (whilst in perfect English) dosent seem to have been translated correctly. A few spoken sentances are...off for lack of a better description. However..once you start popping up your defensive points and firing magic bolts at incoming enemys it no longer matters. Playing the game is quite intuitive (once you start at least). It's a very nice looking cartoony world and one of the nicer ones I've visited in my Vive. The game play is acctually fun and quite engaging as well. Whilst I'm only a couple of levels in, I can see me playing this right through the main campagin (when I get the free time). Well worth the price asked and a must if (like I mentioned earlier) you like both tower defense games and enjoyed Longbow in "The Lab".
Some of the worst voice acting I've ever heard combined with just dropping you into the game with no context or how to play makes this a pretty average game... I can see why it was in the Indie Gala VR II Bundle...
press trigger to continue
Polished gfx and presentation but an odd amalgam of tower defense and archery with a cartoon style. Some VR games drop you right into character and you feel part of the game but i personally didn't identify with the role of a boy opening up presents from his bearded wizard uncle and then defending crystals from incoming rabbits and other wildlife. The magic scepter draws back like a bow but has 'laser sights' so you can align your target. It's ... different. After deploying your 'toys' (traps, turrets etc) you have a wave of different attackers to contend with. After several levels there's a 'boss' fight with a witch who hurls fireballs. Then i traced a pattern in the air (spell) and the witch was defeated. The voice acting was pedestrian but it was in English (accented US) and there were lots of mid game overlays that clearly show controller functions. I got the impression that there was a lot more levels and variety of scenes ahead. At the current discounted price there's certainly a lot of content for the price, the UI works well and it all looks great but there are better individual archery, RTS and Wizardry games. If you're looking for something that combines all three however and you don't mind the confusing storyline then try this. 6.5/10
