I highly recommend this game to anyone - no matter their level of experience with similar games. The game has unique mechanics in every world and memorable boss fights, and despite the vast array of mechanics, the game is just as simple and intuitive as it is challenging. The music and varied color palettes keep the charm going as you roam across the forest in your quest to become king. Play this game on a cozy evening in or become a collector - this game will have something for you no matter your preferred play-style. Play Chico!
This is such a great game. It has difficult platforming and well-designed puzzles that are challenging but never too hard! The aesthetic is so classic it really does feel like a lost gem. I only wish it were longer, but it's well worth the price! I'm a little over halfway (I think). The soundtrack is also fantastic and the various color palettes keep the look fresh.
Chico and the Magic Orchards deserves way more attention. I did this game on Tough Nut difficulty, where you only have 1HP (for the achievement). But you can choose to have more HP in the settings. You will feel this difference mostly in the bosses, as there are no enemies in the levels. But there are spikes, so be careful!
Main Campaign
The main story has an intro level and then five themed areas with two levels apiece. I really love the design of each one and there are different gimmicks to give you more variety. The music is fantastic, too, and complements the aesthetic so well. You can collect seeds to buy colour palettes and music tapes from the shop. So cool!! I stuck with the 'full colour' palette on my first playthrough but I love that there is an option to choose amongst many different shades. It's easy to get all of the seeds in a level, so it will be satisfying for completionists. You have to traverse the levels by completing some light puzzles and collecting keys to progress further. There are some clever mechanics with the walnut and both the platforming and puzzles get trickier as you go forth. At the end of each level is a boss. You might have to wait a bit to figure out how each boss works, but you'll be able to do it. I played on a controller and I found some of the diagonal stuff a bit hard to do. There are moments when you have to jump diagonally or hit something diagonally with the walnut and I did struggle a bit there. Sometimes Chico slips off a platform and there were the odd times I thought I had pressed the jump button but I fell down the hole. I guess I didn't press the button in time. But you know what? I couldn't stay annoyed because the art is so damn cute. I looked at Chico's little face and thought "I like this game". And luckily the parts that I found tricky didn't last for long. There are checkpoints that are fairly spaced and you can recollect the walnut at certain points, too. So there isn't a load of backtracking if you fail. The last boss was hard though! Bounce the walnut against diagonal bumpers (uh oh) and then try and keep your distance or you will get hit! I was glad when I defeated it.
Post Game
After the credits, you can do more! There are two levels and one boss in this area. The extra content adds more uses for the walnut - utilising water, fire and honey! Rather than collecting seeds, you now help save bees. I admit that I did spend a lot of time on this part of the game, mainly because I didn't quite understand some of the requirements. (I stupidly thought the empty fireplaces were some kind of unusable door...) I did some things the unintended way, but I managed in the end. I was scratching my head thinking about how to move on, but then when things clicked, it was simple! You have to pay a bit more attention to the surroundings if you want to find all the bees. Use your wits and you will be able to save them all! Then you face the final boss. This was the hardest in my opinion, because I had to use diagonal hits again. I chose to stay with the Tough Nut difficulty but you don't need it at this point for the achievement. That definitely added to the challenge. Overall, I thought the post-game content was a great addition. It was a fresh, new perspective but it still had the charm of the main campaign. I really want to see more from this developer, they did such a great job. Please, give this game a go! It is well worth the price.
A simple, fun, and cute game that I think pretty convincingly captures the feel of some of those less-famous but still enjoyable gameboy games you probably had as a kid... You know you probably have fond memories of at least one. ;) As a side comment, I had a technical issue pretty early on and the dev himself responded, which was very gracious of him! Definitely recommended for the price.
A great game that feels at home with other Gameboy Color classics. Really reminded me of my good memories of Kirby Tilt and Tumble. The puzzles are fun to figure out, they nailed the art style for what they wanted, and the game is as long as I would like it to be. I absolutely recommend it at the full $5.
Chico and the Magic Orchards DX is a refreshing Zelda-like with fun gameplay and tight controls. The music is fitting and each new area adds new mechanics to keep the gameplay loop fresh. Bosses are fun and challenging, and the puzzles are just challenging enough to make you pause while you look for a solution. While it's not a terribly long game, the bite-size price perfectly matches the short-but-sweet title. Give it a try, you'll likely fall in love just like I did.
Really nice top-down puzzler with a super cute aesthetic! For its rather short length, this game does a really effective job at exploring its mechanics across its stages, introducing a new twist in each one. Platforming sections can be finnicky due to hitboxes, but it doesn't detract overall from the experience. I got this game free from a raffle, but at it's price point I absolutely would've bought it! You should too ^_^
Really does feel like a Gameboy Color game! You should try it if you like little games about simple puzzles and collecting. (Or about elemental effects and rescuing bees, in the postgame.) Takes about 2-3 hours to 100%
A neat little gameboy Zelda-style game, perfect as a contained burst of exploration, light puzzling and active challenges. (Although the latter sometimes suffered from awkward movement, especially with deadly floors - I often respawned where I had just died, immediately losing another life). The DX update is a good half of the game, and felt like a good way to wrap things up - more open exploratory sections which use new mechanics in fun ways. (Plus, I liked covering the whole floor with honey, just for the fun of it).
the game is good but has a big problem of hitboxes, I'll hope the dev fix that in the future.
