Reviewing (mostly) every game (or DLC) in my library, part 631: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆ (9/10) I was initially worried about buying Chicken Police: Into the HIVE! after reading the most helpful reviews. The top—negative!—reviews called the game rushed, not as good as the first game, and had a poor ending. However, I'm so glad I decided to take the plunge anyway because I honestly think the opposite. I think Chicken Police: Into the HIVE! is bigger, better, and more polished than the previous game. It's practically flawless, honestly. I completely fell in love with the witty writing, BEAUTIFUL art style, and meaningful plot. My only criticism is, yes, a tiny part of the ending that came out of the blue, is a tad bit rushed, and very controversial. Still, I had a blast for pretty much 98% of the game, and I don't think the 2% I didn't like mars the game at all.
Pros:
✅ Atmosphere. Everything about the game is atmospheric. I mean, just look at the art style first. I have no idea what it's professionally called, but just feast your eyes on the game's art. The game uses realistic 3D character models and environments, yet everything is presented with a stylized, cinematic quality that feels like a graphic novel brought to life. There's a constant soft soundtrack of jazz music, and somehow, there's even a dynamic light system: lighting effects, neon signs, moving shadows, rain-slick reflections, and changes in illumination. Ugh. The game is just so cool. ✅ Fantastic writing. I adore the writing in Chicken Police. The dialogue is consistently sharp, witty, and funny, balancing dry humor, clever banter, and noir-style cynicism without ever feeling forced. Sonny and Marty have excellent chemistry, and their conversations are often just as entertaining as the investigation itself. Even minor characters are memorable, each with their own distinct voice, design, and personality. ✅ The plot is equally impressive. What begins as a collection of seemingly unrelated leads gradually unfolds into a larger mystery, weaving multiple storylines together until everything converges into a satisfying conclusion. The game constantly rewards paying attention, and it's fascinating to watch how small details, offhand comments, and side investigations eventually connect to the bigger picture. There’s more focus on worldbuilding this time around, especially, as the title suggests, on insects. Cockroaches, spiders, and slugs make an appearance. Which, gross, but also super cool. Most importantly, the game examines inequality and oppression pretty clearly yet never feels preachy. Maybe the guise of animals gives the audience a bit of distance from current events, but the main messages are simple yet clear: there is no difference between insects and non-insects. Even though the world is unjust, we should still attempt to be good and do good. Ask for help from friends when needed. And ya know what? I totally fw it. ✅ Good QoL. There's a couple things I appreciated: a "skip all dialogue" button, a history log of all dialogue in a started conversation, and an option to autoplay dialogue. There's also no pixel-hunting, as there's a button to show all clickables, as well as an "!" icon showing new unlocked dialogue. Lastly, there's information on each character, along with places you visit, and a clear quest log with clues to follow. ✅ Steam Deck performance. Max settings gave me 45 FPS that never stuttered or crashed once. I had no issues with controls either, using both the touchscreen and the gamepad.
Cons:
🟥 The biggest con is no manual save system. This is one I'm confused about. Chicken Police: Into the HIVE! is a noir visual novel where you play as a detective. It's not like Ace Attorney or any dating sim where your actions have consequences, so why the requirement for automatic saving? A couple times I thought the game saved my progress, only to have to play through a couple of minutes. 🟥 Some small but important rushed bits in the ending. I didn’t mind the ending at all, even the controversial decision to
kill Marty.
It’s shocking, yes, but I mainly took issue with how abruptly the narrative handled it. We’re told
Marty is shot, is in the hospital, undergoes a life-threatening procedure, but is alive! We even get to speak to him! However, there’s an incredibly rushed “goodbye” scene between Marty and Sonny and Marty and Laura. The next scene is a 30-second still of Marty’s funeral, which feels less like a narrative choice and more like purposefully taunting the audience. “Oh, haha, you thought he would live? He’s DEAD.” Plus, I think Sonny would have never gotten over Marty’s death.
I also wanted to know about
Molly and Sonny’s daughter, along with Laura and the baby.
🟥 Minigames. I wasn’t a fan of the minigames (e.g. the lock-picking, shooting, card game, and music playing). They weren’t bad, and they were well-made, but most minigames only showed up once. If anything, I felt it took away from the tight pacing and controlled narrative. 🟥 Must have played the previous game recently to understand the sequel. If you haven’t played the first Chicken Police, you’ll have no idea what’s going on. However, I finished the first Chicken Police a couple years ago, and I did feel like I was missing some context and inside jokes. I wished there was a “recap,” like how Telltale used to do it. Not perfect, but I still recommend it. The shooting mechanic is a missed opportunity. It was introduced in the shooting range but never actually used in the main game. I was honestly expecting some kind of fight, maybe in the church or the factory, but it just never happened, which was pretty disappointing since the guns were pretty satisfying to shoot at. The ending also felt abrupt. It made me feel that the developers wanted to add more but ran out of time. The pacing in the early chapters also sucked. It dragged too long and even got confusing at times, specifically "The plate puzzle at the graveyard." The pace picks up in the middle chapter, though, and becomes more engaging. Performance is another issue. On my laptop iGPU, I was getting around 20 FPS at the lowest graphics during dialogues, which shouldn’t be that demanding for a 2D game. That said, the game clearly has a lot of passion behind it. It’s not perfect, but you can feel the effort and care put into it. And that's why I really like the series and will probably follow the creators' future games for it.
A good Detective/Noir/Indie ( whatever you want to call it ) game. I started to play Detective Games with animals, because I played "Blacksad: Under The Skin" before, but don`t Imagine I`M A PRO at such games... I do what I can. Part 1: "Chicken Police: Paint it Red!" was just an Introduction, but If I have to compare them: Part 2: "Chicken Police: Into The Hive!" was so much better! ( I enjoyed it way more than Part 1 ). I recommend you give it a try! NOTE: YOU MUST PLAY THE FIRST GAME: "Chicken Police: Paint it in Red" to understand the whole story in PART 2 !!! Have Fun. The Only Cons would be a LOT of talking, but thank god im used with it.
very sad i liked their first game but this was a let down... and the ending...
killing marty off is criminal he was my fav
Chicken Police Into the Hive
This game is great, everything that was good about the first one is also in here. The only bad part is that the last third of the game is somewhat rushed and unfinished. Could've been my favourite this year, but it's still fairly good as a fan of Paint it Red.
