Not ready for prime time. Runs terrible on good hardware, like 10 fps on a 4060. Changed the settings to low, that made it run better without seeing any difference in quality. Needs a major UI update, cant find settings anywhere, game restarts when changing the board. And why is there no way to play offline? Anyhow, I can see past these issues, but 15 minutes in a game it crashed, and that was the final straw for me to get a refund. I'm sorry to be so negative in a review, but this game is simply not ready to be sold
Terrible performance. 10 fps in a chess game is a kind of joke. Refund.
The core game looks great but performance is a nightmare. I don't have the best hardware but I wasn't expecting to get 15 frames in a chess game. This was with low graphics and before I started my first game. Then when I got to my second game, My screen would get stuck on my last move with my opponents time running down. Meanwhile they had made their room and I was the one losing time. I was excited when I saw this game was being made, and now that it's out I wish we had to wait longer. These problems make me feel this game is another instance of "Release the game before the holiday season sale, and worry about functionality when we make a patch." A mentality I am noticing and growing to despise. I am requesting a refund, and doubt I will return to this, as I feel giving money to this game will encourage more games to come out rushed, buggy, and performing poorly and fixing it in mega patches.
I could discuss the smooth interface, the graphics etc, but I think that the best review I could give is that this game has reignited my interest and passion for playing chess
Someone will eventually make a really great GUI for lichess. Unfortunately this isn't it. It has a primitive interface and lacks basic quality of life features like the ability to zoom in on the chess board. The performance is almost unfathomably bad given the early 2000s graphics, which makes me doubt it has the technical foundation for improvement into something I would choose over the lichess web interface. As a GUI for lichess, its only real function is to look pretty. Compare Chess Ultra, which is five years old but light years ahead visually (with VR) and runs smoothly. That game had to be developed with its own chess engines and multiplayer platform (which still works), whereas here all that work was already done by lichess but the end result is inferior. Respect for trying to add something we all want to the world, but this should really be an early access or free to play project in its current state. Would consider trying again after a great deal of work has gone into it, but I think it's more likely that another project will develop on the lichess API with sounder foundations.
I really enjoyed a few games ^_^. It does need a lot more work as perfectly mentioned in the other reviews but I feel it has great potential! Looking forward to updates and playing it again!
Played for a little and enjoyed the concept. Lichess play is an interesting concept since it fixes a lot of multiplayer matchmaking issues with other chess games. I agree with the other reviews some optimization is needed but ran 60 fps on medium for me. Will keep checking back for updates
It's a very reasonably priced chess game which I suspect will only improve with age and development. The dev/s seem very keen to get this game to the point it satisfies most peoples chess itch which is to be commended. I'm looking forward to seeing the direction the team take this game, the basics are all there, especially the link with Lichess on the Steam platform which is a huge plus, the graphics and optimization are a work in progress and I have no doubt they will be improved with the addition of offline play, animations and new boards and higher polygon pieces as they are a little difficult to differentiate at times, ie the knights face forward rather than sideways to make them stand out more on the board. The AI seems pretty good so far tho I haven't so far tested it that deeply and don't know what chess engine they are using, the Lichess one maybe? The puzzles are a very nice touch, although it could do with removing the hint button and replacing it with a puzzle title like 'white to mate in 3' or 'find the best move for white' as it is on Lichess. All in all, I definitely recommend this game, especially at the price point, and I don't doubt that it will get better as the dev/s continue to work on it and improve it.
Very good idea, to combine 3D pieces and environments with a very active playerbase. Still a little rough around the edges with lack of customization options, and mainly the lack of any ability to see Lichess ratings or analysis within the game itself. I look forward to seeing the improvements for this very ambitious project.
Love the game! Have not really played chess that seriously, but this game is a great platform to just mess around and have fun in. The customization of the board, background, and pieces make for a relaxing experience. Chess has been always something I have wanted to learn, and I am excited to keep running AI games and puzzles in the background while I am doing other things. Excited to see what else gets added into this.
