A nifty little 2D arena shooter
Gunkid 99 is a 2D arena shooter developed by Yongjustyong. The twist here is that you score points by collecting weapons rather than killing enemies. I originally heard about it on r/indiegaming and ended up picking the game up on itch a while back because it came with a Steam key. I have some more time on my itch copy of the game, but I haven’t completed it. I wanted to get something up there to help anyone looking at it on launch day. I will update this review as necessary as I continue to play it.
Positives:

The art is good overall, its consistent and I think the style fits the game well. The music is also very fitting.
You have five worlds here, each with a few different levels (somewhere between 5-10 per world I believe). Beating a level unlocks the next level, and then you need a certain number of points to unlock the next world. The levels are surprisingly challenging, I don't think I've beaten any of them on my first try so far.
As I mentioned earlier, points are earned by collecting weapons. So a weapon spawns, you run and grab it all while enemies are spawning and trying to kill you in arenas. You have a set amount of time to collect each weapon (I think it's between 15-20 seconds, but a timer pops up when you get down to 10 seconds remaining) and you have to grab it, replacing whatever weapon you already had. It works well and it's a pretty nice twist.
Weapon variation is great, so far I've unlocked a new weapon after every level and there are more weapons available for purchase in the shop. The variation really helps in the levels and you have to vary your playstyle quite a bit according to what weapons are dropping.
As I mentioned earlier, new worlds are unlocked by earning a set number of points. These points are earned (and count towards your score) in normal and equipped mode. Normal mode has all the currently unlocked weapons in it, and any of them can drop at any time. Equipped mode lets you set a loadout of three weapons and three (passive) items. Choosing weapons you like is obviously an easier way of getting a better score.
Enemy variation is good, and each world has different enemies (with the fifth and final world being an amalgamation of all of them).
Both normal and equipped mode has leaderboards, there should be some decent replay value here if you're a scorechaser.

Minor Negatives:

I would have liked to see some active items in the game, something that you can use a couple of times per level to help out. Some grenades or something that works similar to blanks in Gungeon would have been really nice.

Verdict:
Gunkid 99 is a fun little 2D arena game that comes at a very reasonable price. Earning points from collecting weapons adds good variety to each level, and it’s a neat little twist. It has a couple of minor issues, but nothing to stop me from recommending it.
Gunkid 99 is an arcade action platformer in a similar vein to Super Crate Box
There are 5 different worlds, each with their own enemy types and challenges. Each world has 7 levels, and every level can be played infinitely on a leaderboard. Replayability is strong in this one if you enjoy grinding for highscores. To get score, you have to collect weapons. There are several different weapons that will spawn randomly (or in equipped mode, you can shorten the list down to 3 weapons that can spawn) and you have to do this within a time limit. If you go longer than about 20 seconds, you lose. So gameplay consists of running around the level, dodging and killing the neverending swarm of enemies, and constantly picking up toys to shoot at them. The game is frantic and gets very difficult. The art style can be a little off-putting. It's very simple and doesn't really scream "I'm a very high quality game!" to someone who hasn't played the game before. I assure you that the game feels and plays very polished, to which I was a bit surprised by when I tried the demo. The controls are very tight, the character feels perfectly weighty, and guns have a great "oomph" to them. Why get this instead of playing Super Crate Box? There's much better variety here with a lot more toys to play with, tons of levels, and passive upgrades. It's similar enough to SCB to see the inspiration clearly, but it makes itself different enough to carve out a piece of the pie for itself.
Great time killer, looks good, play is solid and fun, surprisingly challenging and a unique progression system that is slightly addictive, good job dev(s), keep it up, ty.
So uhh... this game is kinda ok? Don't get me wrong, the core gameplay is really fun: all the juice is there, shooting feels really good, jumping feels awesome too I really adore the art style and the animations look nice as well This however concludes everything positive about this game So what problems does this game have? - "Level design" sucks. The game just spawns random enemies at you in random places in huge quantities and gives you random guns and it often feels just unfair. All the levels are pretty repetitive too. - Levels are monotonous. Every level feels like a copy of each other. I thought that maybe at least the last levels of every world would be interesting as in there will be an exciting boss battle? Nope, the last level is just the same enemies but MORE for some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ reason. - The grind. After you beat the horrendous last level of a world you can't just go to the next world you HAVE TO grind this world more to get more "points" to unlock the next world. This sounds like the worst game idea ever? Yeah I mean it is. - A lot of redundant mechanics: dodge roll, wall climbing, reloading. Why does this game have such an unnecessary level of complexity? Why can guns be reloaded if you pick up a new gun every 5 seconds and thus almost always don't have a chance to use up all your ammo? Wall climbing ofteen feels like it just gets in my way. As for dodge roll... I completely forgot that it even existed after tutorial. - UI sucks. The word "Achievements" doesn't even fit into its button, button hover effect sucks, settings menu sucks, overall menus look completely unexciting. - No interesting extra gamemodes besides the main one. - No lore of any kind. - Music is boring, sound effects often feel out of place. And finally, the game lacks DEPTH. It feels really plain and boring and repetitive for no reason. Don't recommend buying it.
Saw the game on a Reddit post several months ago and decided to tab it, and I am very glad that I did. For the hour and a half that I've played so far I really enjoyed it. Game was definitely worth the $5 and keeps me entertained between ranked queues or if I'm just bored.
Gunkid 99 is a great platformer that will sure keep you entertained. With so many different maps and guns there's always something you can do, every single map can be replayed, there's 2 modes, normal which is every gun you currently have unlocked the game will switch between every single weapon, Equipped is a mode that lets you play any map with your preferred loadout. My favorite loadout is Mini Cannon, Smg and Laser Rifle. You will unlock weapons as you go along. this game feels great the single developer did a good job on making this game feel incredible. Right now the developer of this game is taking suggestions and feedback in his discord server. (pros) The games feels really good and plays well It has a good variety of weapon options good soundtrack (in my opinion) (cons) only 5 worlds which makes the game very short because most people would want a longer game on a few levels there's a lot of items that spawn, I think the enemy spawn rate should decrees on some levels because of how small some of the maps are. I never really thought this game would do good on release, and it really didn't but in my opinion I think it deserves a bit more attention, sure the game is pretty short but It has a lot of replayablility on it, which makes it even, a short game that can be replayed forever and ever.
this game is an absolute banger! feels amazing to control and you very often end up in cool, empowering situations. the roll feels great. the guns are diverse and full of personality (and all play on unique strengths and downsides.) the game can get pretty tough though, so dont feel too bad if youre having a hard time. honestly just play for as long as youre having fun!
This is 90% of a good game. The graphics are nice and surprisingly well animated, the weapons are plentiful and varied, the controls work well, the upgrade system is simple yet allows for creative strategies, the enemies pose actually different challenges instead of being simple recolors of a few base types... What's the problem, then? Well, the game only has one game mode, and it's a pretty bad one. You are in an arena, a weapon pickup that replaces your held weapon spawns, you pick it up within 15 seconds else it's game over, 1.5 seconds later another weapon pickup spawns and the cycle repeats. Enemies spawn too, at slightly longer intervals (3, maybe 4 seconds), but they're just an obstacle: your score is determined ONLY by how many weapon pickups you manage to collect before dying, nothing else. In practice, it's quite common to pick up a weapon and swap it for another before having the opportunity to shoot even a single enemy with it. It's hard to keep track of all the weapons with special properties that are ruined by this game mode, here's a couple examples.

Thermal lance takes longer to charge up than it takes for a new weapon to spawn
Stake launcher in theory forces you to pick up its projectiles to recover ammo, in practice you'll swap it for another weapon long before that becomes a concern.
Many weapons have strong recoil that can be used to boost your jump mid-air, you'll never get used to it because you'll constantly switch between weapons with and without recoil
Some weapons fire by holding down left mouse, some require you to tap, constantly switching back and forth is very annoying.
A couple weapons are very powerful BUT you take double damage while holding them (and you have 3 hit points by default, so it's a big risk), want to play it safe and not use them? Too bad, you don't get to choose!
And then comes the nail in the coffin: the whole game is about getting high enough scores to meet certain unlock milestones, but on your first try on a level you'll "win" after a certain score (far too low to pass those milestones) and will have to restart from 0 to try and get a real high score. This shameless padding is IMO the main reason only 1 in 3 players even bothered to finish the 1st world, I get that it's a cheap game but that doesn't mean it's ok to waste the player's time.
This game isn't designed very well. No offense to the developer or anything, this game just is not executed well at all in my opinion. I bought this game on steam while it was heavily discounted, but I also bought this game on the Nintendo switch for full price and that's where my gripes mainly come from. On the switch you obviously use a controller to play but the default button layout is so abhorrent it should be studied. Most of enemies had uninspired blob designs and then there's an orange evil wobbuffet that shoots projectiles at you which just pissed me off to no end. They for some reason have infinite range and take way to many bullets to kill. On keyboard and mouse a lot of my issues are fixed, since you don't have to choose between shooting, aiming, and jumping and can do all of them simultaneously. Playing with a keyboard made the game feel less like juggling flaming chainsaws and more like playing an actual video game. My final issue with the game though is the way you unlock new worlds. You need to not only complete all the levels in a world, but also grind an arbitrary amount of score across all levels. Which was the final nail in the coffin for me. Will I revisit this game in the future? Possibly. Is this game worth it's base price? in my opinion, not at all. Are all my grievances with this game due to my lack of skill? Most definitely. 3.5/10
Actually good.
