With a heavy heart, after getting the true ending, can't recommend this game. The true endings in the previous entries have never been the creme of the crop either, but they at least stayed within the confines of their respective plots. I think this true ending really sours the entire experience however and it's such a shame. I think the common route is by far the strongest of the game and it's a slow downhill from there. I was considering writing detailed thoughts on each route, but they don't really reflect my opinion of the game as a whole, so here's just a couple pieces of rambling as to why I think the true ending sours my experience.
The true ending raises a lot of questions and kind of creates a lot of plotholes. The basic premise is that the common route, and really all routes, are delusions made up by Takuru/+ one of the girls in their routes delusions. The common route however, is mostly reality out of Takurus perspective with a couple of differences. In reality, all of the Chaos Child Syndrome kids are old and haggered and are unable to differenciate reality from delusion. Incudling our main cast sans Serika. Additionally, all of the cast's Gigalomaniac powers must be real because Itou was still brainwashed in reality. Working under this assumption also creates plotholes. Due to the differences in both routes however creates problems. The biggest obvious difference is Nono dying. Why did Takuru delude himself into thinking that Nono died? Furthermore, Nono dying is a very big character motivator for Takuru to keep persuing the case in the common rotue, yet in the real world, Nono isn't dead, why did Takuru behave the same way then? Also if the Author already decided to save Nono in the true ending, why'd Yui have to die too? This half-assed "good ending" just really stinks. Next, why did Serika spend her time with the Chaos Child Syndrome students? Was the real world Serika seeing the delusion too or did she just decide to spend her time with them? We know Serika can't be suffering from CCS because she came to exist after the white light in Shibuya and because she had her youthful appearence, so how would she have started to share this delusion with them? If it is the latter, why didn't anyone else ask questions? What about Kunosato or Shinjo, why did they never speak up about Serika's situation? Why didn't she investigate and scan her brain and the such? Did the committee pull strings to put her there? In that case Kunosato especially would've investigated. We already know that Serika must have had her powers in the real world, but this causes problems. The game tells us that Serika was only capable of reading minds, and that her DI-Sword transfers her thoughts to others. This can't be true however. Serika was able to delude the cop in the love hotel, presumably was the person unlocking the doors before Takuru got his powers, assumably caused the Senri hallucinations at Cafe LAX and was also able to talk to Takuru in the post-ending "Did you have fun, Takuru?" quips. This leads to the theory that she is a true Gigalomaniac like Takuru is... but if this is the case, the plot kind of doesn't make sense. Serika should never have been pushed into a corner and should have been able to overwhelm Takuru in the common/true route and Nono in her route. You could argue she wanted to be defeated in the common route, but in the Nono route, she tried her hardest to resist until the end with no hint of her cold calculating persona in sight. Now this could all be ignored if the common route was well, mostly a delusion with fake information, but unfortunately, the true ending implies that most of it still ended up happening. Her being a true Gigalomaniac also causes issues with Wakui. Speaking of Wakui. His existence as a member of the Committee kinda sucks. I think the author feels the need to include the Committee as a villain in every entry but it just doesn't work here. We already had Sakuma and Wakui just isn't part of the plot enough to be taken seriously as a villain. The resolution also doesn't make sense, Wakui had no reason to agree to Takuru's taunt because A: he had already fallen from graces with the Committee, so why risk it and B: Serika is also probably a true Gigalomaniac. We also saw how Wakui's powers, even in the brief moment, were able to bring back some of Serika's memories. The resolution just does not make sense and has no reason to exist. The plot would still work just fine if you replace Wakui with Sakuma in the true ending cutscenes and leave the aftermath with the Committee ambigious. I think the true ending also undercuts the themes of the story. The whole game places big importance in being informed and making decisions based on your information. The true ending however, shows us that idk, information doens't matter because you could be suffering from a delusion and never know? It's quite the mixxed message.
good
士力架可爱捏。
By far the BEST SCI ADV game I read so far (I have still yet to read anonymous code which i heard is also really good and has a good story). I love the characters, the setting, the powers, I love everything about this game. The openings songs are absolute bangers. The story is beautifully written and always kept me hooked. I highly recommend this game but make sure to download the committee of zero patch as it makes the game better.
Fire
I decided to write this review since it's Onoe Serika's birthday, happy birthday to the best character in all of Sci adv!!! Chaos;Child is one of my favorite visual novels of all time, it has not only a great story but a very lovable cast of characters. Although this review will contain a lot of spoilers so beware if you haven't read it yet. (you can skip to the end if you want to avoid them) Take Serika as an example, who is my favorite character in the VN. She is Takuru's childhood friend, as well as his most trusted ally in investigations. Serika always supports him, maybe even a little too much. As the story progresses you discover a lot of secrets about her existence as a whole, as well as the reason why the murders even happen. In my opinion Serika is one of the best visual novel heroines, she's not only a funny character who always lights up the mood when everyone are down, but is actually very interesting considering how much she had done for Takuru because of his selfish wish of being "special", as well as her sick form of love for him. My second favorite heroine after Serika is Nono. I would say that she has a great personality that I really enjoy. She's a big sister figure to Takuru, Nono always looks out for him, trying to keep him away from all the dangers of the New Generation murders. She has her reasons of course, having suffered a lot in her childhood as an object of painful experiments. Nono never really had a loving family, with this being the main reason for the love she has for her foster family. In my opinion she's a very likeable character because of her great personality and her relationship with newspaper club as a whole (The empress is very scary...Nono you deserved better...) The final character that I wanted to to mention is Takuru himself, who is, well, the protagonist of the story. He is actually very different from an ordinary vn mc, Takuru likes to put people in 2 categories - wrongsiders and rightsiders, he is of course a rightsider, since he is able to tell which information on the internet is false and which is always right. On the other hand a lot of people that Takuru sees in school are all wrongsiders in his opinion, since they always follow trends and spend their time talking about funny things instead of exchanging information about actual serious topics. Because of Takuru's past, he thinks of himself as someone "special", someone, who's very different from everyone else, who can't live a normal life like everyone else. He is an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to everyone, sometimes even to his friend group, but he actually cares for his friends and family when time requires it. Takuru may be too stubborn to stop investing the murders until someone important to him suffers from it, but he always shows a caring side when Nono and others try to make contact with him. He's probably one of the most relateble protagonists of visual novels that I have ever seen. The only thing I can say about Chaos;Child's story is that it's great, it's a very intriguing murder investigation, where the culprit can always be someone close to you, or someone who you trust a lot. New generation madness really shakes everyone to the core, and the only person who can uncover the truth is Takuru himself, who is probably somehow connected to the murders. I really recommend every sci adv and visual novel fan to read Chaos;Child because it's just that good, it would be really nice if they would translate LCC, but it's already being translated by fans, so we need to just wait a little longer. This concludes my review for Chaos;Child, I really think that it's a great story that everyone experience themselves. Happy birthday to Serika again!!!
Chaos;Child was just... WOW This might be the first time I've actually gotten post-game depression. I say this because if I have before for another game, and if I have, Chaos;Child was the first time in a long time. What a freaking masterpiece. I've only just finished the common route but I can see why people rate it so highly now, and honestly I do too. In terms of presentation and storytelling, I think Chaos;Child did a much better job than Steins;Gate's VN even though that was also a masterpiece, but in terms of story and concepts, I cannot really compare because they cover fundamentally different things I'm so sad that the anime was actually so not well received now... because so many people are missing out on such an amazing story. While I did like the anime many years back when I watched it, skimming through the anime now as honestly disappointing compared to the VN. This game is what I would call a kamige and you should absolutely play Chaos;Child. Make sure you play Chaos;Head NoaH first at the very least and always play with the CoZ patch.
