Castle of Venia

I was hoping that this game would be a decent Castlevania rip-off, but was pretty disappointed with what I got. The worst problems I found were: - The game's "old TV" asthetic is apparently a permanent fixture, since I couldn't find any way to turn it off. If you don't mind it, then this won't be a problem for you, but it certainly was for me. - The gameplay itself is horribly flawed in that, apparently, you cannot attack while moving. This is an unbelievably broken play mechanic, making the game practically unplayable. I tested the game using first by using the keyboard controls and then an Xbox Elite controller, but the result was the same. Given the control problem alone, I cannot recommend this game to anyone. Perhaps the developers will patch this flaw, but until such time, save your money.

The art style is really something, a nice nod to the old Castlevania series with something new and personal. However the game is not what you can expect: it's an old school arcade, with wide single room-levels full of enemies and you mus simply kill everyone to go to the next level, similar in concept to what Bubble bobble or Snow Bros are. And the game in these terms is pretty fun, nut it lacks a lot: you can finish it in about half an hour, there are only few levels... There is also an "old crt view" filter that can't be disabled, it didn't bother me but some people can find it quite annoying, and you have to keep it. But the worst thing I found among all are the controls. The character moves quite smoothly, but there is a really long delay from when you press the attack button and when the attack starts. It gets even worse: you can't attack while moving or jumping, you have to be still (or crouched) to attack. I don't know why the developer choose these controls but it's really frustrating. The price is low, but I feel it's still overpriced at the moment.

This game is terrible. The screen effect looks bad. You can't attack at all while moving.

Technically competent, but there's not much of a game here.

This game has potential, but is more frustrating than it's worth in my opinion. The jumping is super floaty...and I'm not a fan. Oddly, you can't attack while moving/jumping, so that takes some getting used to. When you die, you have to start the level all over again, and it's just not rewarding enough. That all aside, there's zero plot. The graphics are nice and nostalgic, so, there's that at least. ~David.

Terrible action platformer that might appear to look well-crafted, but is anything but.

Рад, что такие игры, как Castle of Venia, до сих пор существуют, ведь они буквально напоминают о том, какие игры были в прошлом. Однако понравятся подобные платформеры не всем геймерам, так как новое поколение только и знает про экшен и крутую графику. Очень радует, что в игре есть поддержка контроллеров, с ними играть намного удобнее и интереснее. По ходу игры тебя постоянно сопровождает музыка и неожиданности со стороны уровней. Если вы любите олдскульные проекты, то Castle of Venia точно для вас!

I sympathize somewhat with some of the negative reviews here but honestly, I think their being a bit dramatic. The games costs €2.39 and is actually a good little game. Not being able to use your sword mid air or while running seemed stupid to me at first then I grew to like it. It makes it more challenging, which is the point. It's a CastleVania clone and it's supposed to be difficult. All in all, I found the game to be quite easy in fairness but enjoyed it a lot. Castle of Venia is a retro 2D pixel platformer/brawler aping Ghosts and Goblins and other similar games from the early 1990s. If this was released in the early 1990s, it would have been considered a reasonable bargain bin filler at the local game shop. Gameplay is more limited than games like Ghosts and Goblins as you jump around on small levels and brawl against a handful of samey enemies. Unfortunately it was released in 2018, where it just doesn't hold a candle to modern PC games. The control scheme is console controller centric which is a mark against the game. Graphics are fixed resolution, retro pixel. There is an old "CRT" like filter applied to the game which can't be turned off. Controls are fixed and cannot be customised. The game fails to meet just about every basic minimum standard for a PC game, so I can't recommend it.
