GAMEPLAY: https://youtu.be/eKEeMro1Fy4 Casa Caballero stands out as one of the most visually captivating Filipino indie games I've experienced. It beautifully captures the essence of Filipino culture and mythology, particularly with its focus on the Tikbalang. For your first game, this is an impressive and atmospheric horror experience that deserves recognition. PROS: - Compelling Storytelling: The narrative centered around the Tikbalang and local folklore is both rich and haunting. The way it weaves mythology into the gameplay is masterful. - Authentic Level Design: The titular Casa Caballero is a visual highlight, evoking the feel of Intramuros with its historical architecture. The level design does an excellent job of immersing players in a Filipino setting rarely seen in games. - Brutal Horror Moments: Horror fans will appreciate the game’s intensity. The Jun and Michael scene was genuinely shocking and well executed. - Checkpoint System: A major plus. Many horror games skip this and force players to restart from the beginning, this one respects the player's time. - Visuals and Atmosphere: The lighting, shadows, and overall aesthetic are top-tier for an indie title. The game creates a dense, eerie mood from start to finish. - Sound Design: The audio work, from ambient sounds to sudden jolts, elevates the horror experience significantly. - Customizable Settings: A robust settings menu allows players to adjust graphics, display, and audio to suit their preferences. - Minimalist UI: Clean and unobtrusive, the user interface keeps the player immersed. - Clever Easter Eggs: The George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead reference was a brilliant touch for horror buffs. CONS: - Lack of Equip Prompt: During the encounter with Jun, the game doesn't indicate how to equip the gun. The inventory provides no guidance either. A prompt or quick tutorial would greatly improve clarity for players unfamiliar with the mechanics. - No In-Game Map: Navigation can be confusing at times. A simple map accessible via [M] would significantly improve the player experience. - Limited Language Accessibility: While the use of Filipino is appreciated for authenticity, providing optional English translations alongside key terms or dialogue would help international players better understand the story. - Too Dark Visually: Even with brightness maxed, the game remains quite dim. This may enhance tension, but it also makes it difficult to spot threats like the Tikbalang. Some players, including a streamer I shared this game with, struggled with this. - Inventory Bug: Occasionally, unlocking something causes the inventory screen to open unnecessarily, even when the game says "Unlocked" in the corner. This feels unintentional and should be patched. - Clunky Combat Mechanics: During fight-back sequences, aiming and shooting can feel unresponsive or inconsistent. Sometimes, shots don’t register damage properly, making these moments frustrating rather than empowering. - Performance Optimization: The game can be laggy at times, suggesting it may not be fully optimized. This could be a barrier for players on mid-tier PCs. Optimization would greatly improve performance and accessibility. - Abrupt Ending: While the ending is visually impactful, it feels like it’s missing something. A short text or epilogue could help clarify the narrative and give closure to the experience. Casa Caballero is an outstanding debut with strong narrative roots in Filipino folklore, a rich atmosphere, and memorable horror sequences. While there are some quality-of-life and polish issues to address, the overall experience is compelling and culturally significant. If you're a fan of horror or want to experience a game deeply embedded in Filipino culture, Casa Caballero is absolutely worth playing. I'll give this game an 8.4/10 rating! Keep up the good work Pananong Games!
Those eyes, bro. They're watching... from everywhere. It's a good quick game. I did a second run through for.. an achievement.
Casa Caballero shows a side of horror that is not at all utilized enough, Filipino mythology. In this horror game, you delve deep into Filipino culture, mythology and the subsequent horror of said mythology. You explore an abandoned manor as you figure out what took place here for this to happen. Pros: - Amazing visuals - nice sound design - Taking from a not well utilized horror set in a country that not a lot of games take place in - Well rounded experience - Cheap and short game Cons: - Not that optimized - No explanation of how to use the flashlight (show the player pick up a flashlight or something) - Got stuck in trying to find some story related items due to it blending in a bit too well with the environment All in all, I can recommend this game. It taking place in the Philippines as well as actively using the culture, language and myths of the country really make this game stand out as a sort of one of a kind experience right now. I do wish that the surrounding area could feel a bit more 'Filipino' as the woods could feel a bit generic. But the architecture more than made up for it. Highly recommend trying out this game!
Casa Caballero is a proudly Filipino horror with puzzle experience that doesn’t just scare you. It teaches you a bit about your roots. It's atmospheric, mysterious, and just the right level of "kabado". For an indie game, it packs a lot of heart. If you love horror, puzzles, and being mentally slapped by cultural history. PARA SAYO NA TO.
This is a proper homage to Filipino mythology and horror! The spooky atmosphere and the jump scares are so effective, and the voice acting is superb. For a solo developer, this is work of such high caliber. Great work!
A Hidden Gem of Filipino Horror – More Please! Casa Caballero completely caught me off guard, in the best way possible. Set in 1975 and rooted in Filipino folklore, this game instantly pulled me in with its heavy atmosphere, rich storytelling, and a constant creeping sense of dread. And the Tikbalang? Absolutely terrifying. The design, the way it tries to take you down. The atmosphere is so well done. It’s not just about jump scares (though there are a few good ones) it's the tension, the way the castle feels like it's watching you, the eerie silence interrupted by subtle unsettling noises. It's like stepping into a nightmare you can't wake up from, and I mean that as a compliment. The puzzles really scratched that Resident Evil itch for me. They're not too obscure or frustrating; they just require you to pay attention and actually read the documents you find. Once the pieces click, it feels genuinely satisfying. It rewards curiosity without hand-holding, and I love that in a horror game. Considering this is the dev’s first game? I’m seriously impressed. The vibes are strong, classic horror meets rich Filipino mythos. It's a combination I didn't know I needed, but now I want more. This could easily turn into a full series or anthology if they wanted. Now for the one nitpick: The lighting. I get what they were going for low visibility adds tension but sometimes it got a bit too dark, to the point where I struggled to see key items even when I knew what I was looking for. A brightness slider or flashlight tweak could go a long way. That said, it never broke the immersion just made me squint a bit harder. Overall, Casa Caballero is a short, terrifying ride packed with potential. It’s a must-play if you’re into folklore horror, classic survival horror mechanics, or just want something fresh and genuinely creepy. I 100% recommend this, and I can’t wait to see what the dev makes next. More of this, please.
Great short horror game, yet really well done. with good not-to-hard puzzles
Decent indie horror game but learn to optimize the game. Optimization and some gameplay design ruins the experience as some essential items are not hinted properly or not at all, leading to softlocks or just running around not knowing what you need to find. The game has obvious inspiration from Resident Evil series which is nice but I don't fully recommend it with the current level of optimization.
Very cool to see a Filipino horror game. Very cool and enjoyable as a debut title from this developer. Keep it up!
My bros, I love seeing a horror game from my fellow filipinos!! I would like to see more, but Tikbalang hindi talaga siya nakakatok mga tol, proud parin ako pero suggest ko kuha kayo nang inspiration sa Visage, siguro yung mananaggal, pero wag lang yung puro habol, sorry kung honest but I still support, pinoy pride!
