Experienced on the Oculus Quest 2
You can view my review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/rRJdbhySb2U This is a Pokemon clone for VR, except not as polished and also lacking some of the depth of the original. Cartridge Monsters definitely has a base for what could be a good game in the future, but it would need some serious updates and fine tuning of the core combat to make this what I would consider a good VR game. Still, even as is, there is enough here to recommend to any hardcore Pokemon fan looking for a clone in VR ... as long as you're willing to put up with some of the jank and lack of depth. Right now, there is no Pokedex (a monster database or directory with more information on the monsters), but the developers have stated they are working on that. There's also no evolutions and I did not see any debuffs after over 4 hours of gameplay (although there is a cure potion so it's possible there is poisoning or some debuff later on in the game). My team always went first on attack (even if I switched monsters). We always went against just one Cartridge Monster (there weren't any trainers with multiple Cartridge Monsters). While your monsters can unlock more than one special attack, you only start off with one normal attack, one defensive move, and one special attack. The strategy consisted of spamming the special attack until you were out of mana. Also, making sure you had enough potions to get you through the section or taking quick trips to the healing machine. Overall, there just wasn't enough strategy involved. The normal grind of Pokemon, felt even grindier due to this simplified combat system. You only use the defensive move when you need a little bit more mana for a special attack and have lots of HP. The level of the monsters had more to do with success of the combat more than the type of monster you used. The game is running on the Unity Engine. I had 90 fps for the most part on my RTX 3080, but I did have fps drops to as low as 45 fps every now and then. You do have full locomotion and snap turning available, as well as controller direction (not recommended as it is buggy) or headset facing movement. I did appreciate the auto-save system because if you die, you go back to your last save (so manually save before any big fight). Lastly, I generally have liked low polygon art-style for VR games when they are well done. Here, the environments had some odd details & poor lighting. The poor text pop-ups & ugly UI just made this a less than pleasant looking experience. Rate 5.5/10. Could be really good in the future, right now it's just only recommended for hardcore fans willing to put up with several issues.
Please note: I received a free Steam key through the Steam Curator Connect program. i love this game, for being a pokemon style game with mythical creature twist makes the game more enjoyable!, i played from start to finish and from the visual attacks to the BGM for the regular fights and the bosses is very enjoyable, plus the visuals wasn't to overbearing to the eyes, so for players just getting into vr i would say this game would be a good start, with it's go at your own pace story,to taking the time to grind your monsters, so it doesn't make you feel rushed to beat the game. it also really gives you the time to see the hard work put into a simple but enjoyable vr game.
A poor man's Shin Megami Tensei game. Finished it in 5.7 hrs.
This is a first impressions review are however. I will be updating it the longer I play it! One part pokemon, sprinkle in some runescape style graphics, throw it into an end of the world setting and add guns! This is the best way I can describe the "hook" of this game. You are part of a forgotten clan of monster tamers. The game starts with you being told this, being handed a box of stuff and told to capture a monster. The game has a unique rough charm about it that just brings a smile to my face. The writing/story is nothing to write home about and there are grammatical issues all over. As far as inventory management there are some issues in my opinion. Items being picked up not telling you what they are is rough for a new player. I also believe a better explanation on what items do would go a long way. A strength/weakness chart and other quality of life things need to be done. But as a VR game built from the ground up it is fairly solid foundation. (I have certainly played alot worse) summoning monsters, attacks, capturing, healing and buffs...all feel really solid. Cool mechanics such as defending will block dmg. As well as replenish MP. The game can be alittle jank with weird clipping in the environment, weird collision detection and whatnot. That being said it has not hindered my fun of this game so far. The monsters look wicked as well, the attacks are very flashy. I wish there was more information on the tablet {health of mons out of battle, max HP/MP of monster while healing, a pokedex style list so you know what you have left to catch, and things like that} I also believe a "pokedex" style mechanic where you can scan new mons to atleast learn alittle about them during battle would add to the world building as well as possibly a fun mini game mechanic opportunity. So far with roughly 2 hours of time in the game I have very much enjoyed my time in Cartridge Monsters. I am adding it to my twitch stream lineup and will be continuing to play this. It is janky, rough looking, but has alot of heart. I definitely can't wait to see more of this game and see what becomes of it as time goes on. I plan on fleshing this review out the more i play it. Would love to see more to this though! whether it be an expansion, pvp/co-op or a sequel. I am very much sold i am adding on a clip from the live stream I did if you would like to see raw gameplay. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHc40NMxG_w
I love turn-based RPGs. This one is more of a pokemon style one, but I'll take what I can get. I only played it for a bit, but I like it so far. It makes you a bit sick though. The walking speed is a little fast especially while strafing left and right. I'm sure the developer will add a movement speed slider or teleportation or something later. This review is as the game is first releasing.

Poke Clone in VR with voice command attacks! https://youtu.be/qmwU4kqkMo8 First off let's be honest. This needs some love and some polish. There are collision issues with the world. Some quality of life adjustments to be made with looting. The tablet and gun could be more responsive. Some settings didn't seem to take effect correctly. And several others that I mentioned in the video. It should really be labeled as an Early Access title in Steam. If it were, I would be more forgiving of those issues. I didn't encounter anything game breaking or that would prevent my progress but the above definitely make the game feel clunky. Some simple adjustments could go a long way towards making the game feel better. I can hear the comments section now... Complaints on the art style left and right! I don't mind the low poly look. I didn't mind it in Orbus and I don't mind it here. For me, it's more about consistency. It looks much better in headset when everywhere you look, looks the same than it does in a YouTube video. No complaints here about the graphics. At the same time, the low poly doesn't do anything to blow players away either. It's acceptable but not impressive. I did like the battle music and none of the sound effects seemed out of place. Gameplay is exactly what you'd expect from a pokemon game. Some corny questing. Battling and capturing monsters. Collecting them all and becoming the very best! Overall it's a decent poke clone with a lot of potential. It's not a great game but it's also not a bad game. It just needs some love to clean up a few rough edges. This will be a recommended but that's mostly due to the lack of similar genre titles. This is a very unique title in the VR space. Fans of the Creature Collector/Poke Clone genre will likely enjoy themselves. If you're not a big fan of that genre you may want to wait for a sale or for the game to receive a few more QoL patches.
Cartridge Monsters is a Free to play VR RPG that is similar to Pokemon. It worked on my HTC Vive and Index system, looked ok, played ok, sounded ok. This game was paid product at one time, now it is free to play. Game controls are rather clunky. The VR movement mode is touch pad walking, there is no teleport. The maps, people and objects are rather blocky. Has turn based combat and features Voice commands that work for directing your summons. Looks like there is a lot of content to grind through, maybe takes 6+ hours of play. CONS: - Needs Teleport movement. - The tablet text font is rather hard to see, but that could be my HTC Vive and my old bad eyes. Was able to get around it by moving tablet closer to my head. - Could set off motion sickness in some people. Try this game, maybe you might like it.
