Reviews
I'll keep this short, since the game combines two very short walking simulators and I don't want to spoil any surprises. The game came out on itch.io first, but came to Steam in August 2025. The games leans heavily into surreal imagery, stark aesthetic choices, and narrative suggestion instead of telling you anything straight forward. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3592676979 One of Carnal Sins strongest points is the ability to evoke unease through its environments and visual design. The monochromatic, high-contrast look (reminiscent of late-90s PSX-era horror) gives each scene a sense of isolation and disquiet. The game also incorporates FMV (full-motion video) and German/English voice work, lending moments of “real-world” moments to its surreal spaces. I really enjoyed the 70s/80s FMVs about love, and how the mother taught her daughter what love truly is and how she can find out. It showed the stark contrast between todays world and the past. Rooms feel empty, but you get the feeling as if something is lurking just off-camera. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3593387755 Carnal Sins is not a plot-heavy, character-driven blockbuster. Instead, it trades in implication, masked symbolism, and fragmented storytelling. As with many psychological horror works, players must piece together meaning from what is shown. Malum Incarnatum explores descent: love, loneliness, and the corruption of desire, whereas Carne Vescens offers a disturbing vignette of a mother trapped with an insatiable baby, leading her to make horrifying sacrifices. Players who prefer more concrete storytelling might find the ambiguity frustrating, but for those willing to surrender to mood and inference, it’s haunting and maybe even memorable. The game's reliance on suggestion sometimes tilts too far into “what just happened?” territory. Without substantial narrative anchors, some moments may feel hollow or too vague to emotionally land.
Conclusion
Carnal Sins: Malum Incarnatum + Carne Vescens is a compelling, albeit niche, indie horror experience that offers great value for money at just 2€. Its strengths lie in its mood and atmosphere, and in how unsettling life can truly be. It doesn't always provide straightforward answers, but instead offers shadows and half-glimpsed story snippets to explore. Every playthrough takes 20-30 minutes max to finish. If you go into it expecting a clear narrative or complex gameplay, you may be disappointed, but if you enjoy wrestling with ambiguity and lingering on emotionally charged images/FMVs, then you might enjoy this title. Final Verdict: 7/10 - strong for what it aims to do; not perfect, but somewhat memorable.
There are 2 very short walking-simulator games here, both are extremely well made in terms of building tension and having evocative visuals, combining personal struggle of the characters with some religious undertones, although it seems the 'spirituality' part is shown from the perspective of the character, using faith to justify your actions, and looking for personal redemption. Both games are linear with 2 endings each, you can complete them in roughly 30+15 minutes, so about 90 minutes if you want to go for 4 endings, although I haven't managed to get the last one. The narration is in German with English subtitles (except for the movie cuts), but honestly it does not hurt the experience, these games are all about sound design and visual storytelling, and I think they get their idea across very well. Most of the content uses public domain material such as those movie cuts, but they do so with specific timing instead of just showing it, employing various tricks to set the mood and create a tense atmosphere. I was instantly hooked mainly because the games start you off with some uncomfortable scenes, and it never really lets go until the end. This is a thing that I try to communicate to a lot of small devs that make similar games, it's not always about having access to budget and assets, it's more important that you find an interesting way to create a start to finish experience with a compelling story, and I feel like both of these games got it.
Pros:
(+) The mood in both games hits right away because of the uncanny ways these games use the movie cuts, I thought the mood was very tense the whole way, immersive and with an interesting sound design. (+) I liked the writing for both games, the first one maybe was not as original as second, but you can still understand the perspective of the character, and maybe find some relatable themes. (+) One additional ending for each game
Feedback:
- I usually like a bit more optional interactions in these games, but for $2, I don't have any useful criticism, I thought they were well done overall Overall thoughts: 7/10 As long as you don't mind short and linear games, I think both of the games were very interesting, instantly hooking you with uncanny visuals and having a tense atmosphere the entire way. Short narrative but decently written with a few things to think about and perhaps reflect on in your personal life.
Collection of two short disturbing experiences. Very cool artstyle.
Cool to see this made its way to Steam. I played Carne Vescens when that released on itch.io a while back and enjoyed it. I don't think it's been changed in any way. Maybe controller support? Speaking of, the game heavily encourages you to play with a controller, and then the first menu you interact with doesn't work with a controller. Also the speed of which you look about is a little slow for my taste, though I'll grant it does match the pace of the games. If you lay out the stories in plain terms, they feel one dimensional. However, the stylish way they're told gives them depth. Part of that style is the associative use of real world footage. Gives the collection a unique flavor. It's right up my alley. Took me about an hour to 100%. Malum Incarnatum needing to be played twice to get a secret ending which involves collecting all the items scattered throughout the game. There is a room with mouth portraits that gives you hints on where they are, and in one instance, what to do. Definitely worth checking out. 2 great short horror games in one with Malum Incarnatum having really good art style and intro in my opinion along with a deep story. For Carne Vescens I would say it plays out like a standard indie horror game for the most part but still has good cut scenes along with the demon baby demanding more and more. The inclusion of real world footage is something I rarely see in indie games but for the price of the games I would recommend this https://youtu.be/UaQyq4stn6Q
Good art style, great heartfelt stories and perfect atmosphere. If you like short psychological horror games, it's definitely worth checking out! Especially for this very low price. Get it if you like good indie horror.
很简单的两个小游戏,cult vibe
great visuals, simple plot!
