Carnage in space is an old school sidescroller that would have felt right at home on a snes or genesis. You play an an operative sent to help a settlement in an ongoing war. There is a story here with a few twists and turns that is told through cutscenes. Every level begins and ends with a cutscene so they don't get in the way of the action and they are skippable if you don't want to hear the story. Gameplay is broken up into 9 levels. Level variety is excellent and each level has optional objectives that you can complete in order to receive a higher rank. The optional objectives are fun and varied, some are easy to complete, some are difficult but none are necessary in order to progress. The difficulty of this game is just about right. Completing the levels without finishing the optional objectives should be easy enough, but some of the optional objectives are tricky and will require a few playthroughs to master. Each level ends in a boss fight, the boss fights are well done, the majority of them are challenging without being cheap. Of course the first few are simple, but then you really need to learn the patterns in order to beat them. The control in this game is great, you get a jump, dash, melee, and ranged attack. All the movements are fast and fluid, your character is really fun to control, and there is a wide variety of different weapons and abilities to unlock. These unlockables are the biggest negative in the game for me. Most upgrades are somewhere between 30-80 dollars, and the amount of money you acrue in a level is nowhere near enough to be able to afford them. At the end of the level I would typically have less than 5 dollars, then you get a bonus for beating the level. The bonus is small and if you die in the level it is even smaller, many times my bonus would be a few dollars extra. By the time I had completed the game I only had enough money to purchase 2 items. There are tons of cool weapons in this game but the system for unlocking them is really bad and gets in the way of an otherwise cool feature. Overall, this game is a great game for retro action platformer fans and is well worth the 5 dollar asking price.
I've always been really into retro gaming, especially 3rd and 4th gen console games, and I love 2D platformers, so I'm pretty much the target audience for this game. This game could be more accurately reviewed if it had a neutral rating, because it isn't all that bad, it just isn't very good either. The controls are fine. They could be better, and I did find myself fighting with them a bit, but they aren't that bad, and are better than a lot of lone creator indie platformers. The boss battles are kind of bleh. They're kind of easy, and the patterns are pretty easy to pick out. They never really offer anything special or memorable. Again though they aren't really bad, they're just not special, and I could easily forgive this if the rest of the game was better. The biggest issue though is the level design. It's just uninspired. The levels are a bit open, but the game doesn't try to lead the player or give them any direction. Unlike a completely open level design or one with multiple paths, in Carnage in Space there is a right way that the level is supposed to be completed, but with little direction its easy for a player to get lost, and spend time wandering aimlessly trying to find the path. All in all it doesn't look like much thought was put into the level design at all. There are enemies, obstacles, and things to jump on, and a few secrets as well, but there's not much that's special or memorable about the levels, and it doesn't seem like the designer put much thought into how the player would complete the levels. It's easy to get lost, and since you're not doing the level the right way the player makes a blind jump, and they end up jumping into enemies and losing health, or worse jumping to their death. With the 2D platformer genre being so oversaturated, excellent level design is the thing that separates the really great games from all the other ones. Carnage in Space's level design isn't even average, it's a bit below average. The game is still playable, and there's nothing that's outright wrong about it or a fatal flaw that ruins the experience, there's just nothing special about it. It's just another 2D platformer, and a little bit below average as well.
Summary: I don't have a lot of experience with this type of game, so I am really bad at this, but have still enjoyed myself so far. The dialogue is witty and you're able to get into the action pretty quickly. The game is challenging and it seems like a lot of thought was put into the level design. Sometimes the controls feel a bit clunky, but that is very likely just me needing more practice. Pros: From what I have been able to get through so far, the story is fun and the dialogue has been amusing. You're able to get into the first "boss fights" pretty quickly, which I liked. The higher difficulties are no joke. I had to reset and go to the normal difficulty setting. It's nice to be challenged! Cons: For me, with my lack of experience in this type of game, I have had a tough time reaching any level of proficiency with the controls. My guess is that this would play much better on a controller than with a keyboard/mouse, so I would recommend trying that! I'm not even sure it's necessarily a con-- I am just bad at non-FPS games. This could be perfectly standard for this type of game :) Good work to the developer! I've had fun so far and hope to play more soon.
Pretty solid action platformer which looks inspired by the classic 90's DOS games. I feel this game missed its audience and I wish more skilled players knew about it. Pros + Movement & combat felt good + You can buy various upgrades and weapons in between levels + Unlike the old days, progress is saved between the levels and there are achievements + Managed to get the XBOX style controller working (with a bit of fudging) + Level 5 is awesome. The music and jumping on moving vehicles was fun + Level 8 changes pace a bit and becomes a bit like R-Type + Numerous bosses, which were enjoyable to beat + Difficulty is challenging, but fair. You can lower it at any time, there are unlimited lives and if you're really bad ( like me) you get a health boost drop from the sky Cons - Pretty difficult. Most achievements are skill based, so whilst I've completed the game, I've literally got one achievement (RIP) - I wish there was a refund feature if you don't like the weapon you bought. You kind of have to grind for more money and take the L - The boss of Level 7 took me ages to get past, even after I dropped down to Easy mode. The rocket damage you get almost one-shots you, regardless of difficulty. There's a sequel out now, so will have to give that a try.
Carnage in Space is a retro 2D pixel platformer/shooter where you control some kind of robot and shoot robot/insects. The retro pixel graphics are very ugly, the game was released in 2017, there's no excuse for this laziness anymore. It's not "nostalgia", it's "laziness". Hire an artist. On the plus side, the controls are reasonable and fluid but not exceptional. Resolution is fixed at a low level. The game somehow manages to run both pillarboxed and letterboxed so it just uses a small part of the screen (surely the devs could have picked this up in testing... if they did any testing). The quality here is mediocre enough that the game can easily be described as shovelware, but the developers decided to slap a $7.50 price tag on it, which is a bit of a joke.
