Captains are most vulnerable when they set foot on land. Surviving naval combat can be challenging, but at least you won't die alone – your crew will stand with you till the very end. Land battles are different: dishonest, ruthless and risky for you and those who you hold dear. Bring your companions with you, poison your weapons, study the terrain, craft deadly items, and confront thugs, soldiers, pirates, and rivals head-on.

Tailor your character's build – become a heavy swordsman, a nimble rogue, a master sharpshooter, or a silver-tongued diplomat.
Equip yourself and your companions with a wide array of swords, axes, rapiers, armor, muskets, and pistols.
Craft amulets, ammo, potions, and always be prepared for battle.
Seek out challenges – the more you fight, the stronger both you and your character become.
Command military operations from raiding to sieges.

I think this is a prime example of having too much ambition. The ideas are there, but the execution falls short - and it falls hard. First off, this is basically a remake/update of an older game called Sea Dogs: I-forgot-the-sub-title. However, the core of the old game is still there, and oh boy, does it make a mess of things. This whole game is basically a ton of stuff, which by itself sounds good, taped onto an old game which by itself was plenty buggy back in the day. The result is bad. First off, the cardinal sin for any "sandbox" open world game - there are basically two ways to play the game. The way the developer likes to play it, or the "thanks for spending 20+ hours in the game, now ♥♥♥♥ you and restart, until you find out how the developer likes to play the game". The economy is ass and the expenses soon inflate way out of proportion. Even the latest update that rebalanced crew wages only had a minor impact. Generally, the only way to make decent money, is to prey on traders. The other ways to make money will at best allow you to pay crew wages and basic resources / ship maintenance. So yeah, we have our railroad to progress in the game - except sometimes the game bugs out and no traders / convoys spawn, its all just combat ships / patrols and pirates which have f-ck all, and you have to save and reload saves and stay in cities and wait for days and restart the game and whatever the f-ck to get luck for the traders to spawn again. The missions are ass. For 75% of them, the description or info you get is useless or nonsensical. For a bunch of the naval combat missions, the enemy does not spawn on the global map. You have to ♥♥♥♥ around and periodically enter local map/mode and luck into spawning them, and so on. The payouts for 100% of the missions are so low its even less worth doing than trading, which is already a pointless endeavor. And I could just go on. Basically, progressing anywhere in the game is just an extremely tedious and frustrating endeavor. So, what about the combat itself? Well, lets switch to on-foot combat - think of a random budget MMORPG from early 2000s, then make it buggy with healing items randomly switching, etc. Thats your on foot combat. Yay. Naval combat is a bit better, but for a game about being a captain in the caribbean, it is still dreadful. The ship handling, etc. is alright, but A) The AI is azz, the balance was of course messed with, so that it is worse and less fun, and it basically boils down to kiting enemies at the edge of your gun range (hopefully at least on par with the enemy), damaging their sails to 30% HP, and then deciding whether you want to just destroy or board - for destroying you just spam basic ammo to destroy the ship, for boarding, you will want to damage the enemy ship to around 60%, then spam grape until you get them to around 25% crew, then board. Rinse, repeat, die of boredom. The enemy AI has 0 tactics or capabilities beyond extremely basic navigation. Your allies are worse, and will generally just get in the way. Most of the time, they arent even worth it as damage sponges, because the enemy AI has an absolute hard on for the player and will often ignore player-side NPCs, even if targeting them makes more sense... Anyways, I could go on, but whats the point? The game is a mess in pretty much every way. The store page boasts 200 hours of gameplay. What it does not tell you those 200 hours are made up of 1 hour tutorial+prologue which is somewhat engaging, and then 199 hours, which is basically the tutorial/prologue gameplay loop, except made worse in every way.

Reviews, worldwide (the counter carries no country): 4.71/day in the week to Jul 24 → 6.43/day in the week after.
For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

Better wait a little bit and start playing later.
Shiver me timbers! This here game be stirrin' up memories o' me glorious days on the briney deep! Aye, cruisin' me ship across the vast seas, a-plunderin' rival vessels and claimin' their juicy loot as me own! Arrr, if only I had a scurvy dog like meself to sail back to those times. Now, instead o' the open water and the glint o' gold, I be stuck watchin' strange drawings on me glowing rectangle all day. Blimey, a pirate's life for me, not this digital bilge!
I hope they'll keep working on this game, but I'm giving a negative review because they focus on wrong things and with some of their changes make the game even more frustrating than it is. Stop polishing the turd with graphical upgrades and fix it first, improve the gameplay (by making it less janky and frustrating, not more...). Before buying I would advise you to find and try "Corsairs Ship Pack" - which you may like better than this game, and it's free.
A low effort re-release with bugs well intact.
