About

Experience a highly complex simulation of markets within a sophisticated feudal city-builder. The royals entrusted you to settle and govern a new land, and it is your duty to exploit its riches for the benefit of the realm, your own wealth, and if you feel generous, the villagers alike! In order to do this, you will zone out plots, build houses, determine taxation policies, set priorities, and grow the supply chain alongside your population.
Families are the centrepiece of Lords and Villeins. Their profession dictates their occupation in the economy and the kind of businesses they can run. Once you assign them a plot of land and build their house, they will do so almost completely autonomously, all the while managing their stock, setting aside produce to pay taxes, and trading with other families and caravans for supplies and to maximise their profit.
Your role is to direct and regulate the economy. Balance the supply and demand, secure critical resources, and maintain stable growth. Lords and Villeins offers you a sandbox with an in-depth simulation and a great variety of strategies to manage it! Ranging from a fully communist economy where all produce is taxed and redistributed from your warehouse to a free marketplace with little to no intervention.
Logistics will challenge your management skills. As your settlement grows, you need to keep in mind the travelling distances, storage placements, private markets, and housing while reflecting on the terrain and its natural resources in order to fully optimise the productivity of each villager.
Highly customizable gameplay lets you craft the exact kind of game that fits your taste! Between a great variety of game modules and difficulty sliders, you can tweak the experience and focus on the elements of the game that you enjoy the most. While Lords and Villeins is primarily an economically driven game and military conflict plays only a small role, there are tons of options to explore and play with!

Unique family-management mechanic where you assign plots of land to autonomous families and manage taxation policies, production priorities and logistics
In-depth simulation of personal ownership and a market economy. Villagers manage storefronts to sell surplus goods and purchase food and material from others in a cooperative production chain. Prices of goods fluctuate based on supply and demand, and trading caravans facilitate import and export.
Fully simulated procedurally generated environment with a complex AI that can develop relationships, satisfy their needs, daily routines and personal ambitions.
Highly customizable difficulty settings, it is completely up to you how complex or laid-back your playthrough will be!
Campaign mode with 15 distinct levels that introduce game mechanics and teach players about the game.
Noble houses that visit your settlement, request resources and send gifts as you engage in diplomatic relations.
Ability to build a sprawling monastery with monks, churches and chapels that host the Sunday Mass, produce unique resources and treat villagers in an outburst of a sickness.
Villagers can be recruited as your personal servants or guards that protect villagers from crime.
Character designer lets you fully customise and name everyone in your ruling family.
160+ objects at your disposal to build, decorate and improve your settlement.
53 different zones and 40 professions that can be performed by the villagers.
130+ resources to be used in a fully functional production chain.
A number of domesticated animals and pets and thriving nature with wildlife.
Visually distinct seasons with a soundtrack of seasonal themes.
Fully simulated and dynamic world with changing temperature and weather effects.
Lords and Villeins is inspired by medieval history, in its themes and the production processes of goods and material. However, it should not be viewed as a historically accurate simulation of medieval society and its economy as it is straying away from it in many aspects to give players more variety and serve a fun and interesting gameplay.

While the core game is awesome and great, the game breaks down due to AI issues after reaching a population of 100-150, and becomes completely unplayable (NPCs break and stop performing tasks completely) by around 250 pop. The dev committed to fixing the issues and initially promised to fix the issues, and said to expect early 2025 for a fix. Michal, the dev, when asked in late 2025 on the Discord made an announcement that he had a child - he was wished the best by the community and we understandably let it go. However, when asked in February 2026, he stated that after the birth of his child priorities has changed, and he "wants to eventually" return to fix the game, but has no current plans to do so and is not currently working on it. The game does not work. Do not support this developer. Not all lone devs deserve credit when they refuse to finish their product. I wish Michal and his family all the best, but unfortunately this game does not work and I would be hesitant to ever purchase a game he works on ever again. Sorry Michal, you handled this inappropriately.
It's with heavy earth that I write this review. As you can see, I spent a lot of hours in this game. And maybe I'll play again in future. Now, this game has a lot of pros: charming visuals, unique economic system, relaxing gameplay... and those things drew me in again and again! It can be fun seeing you village slowly grow, new families moving in, designing new homesteads etc... BUT. This game has also many flaws. Too many to leave a positive review, sadly. First and foremost, the optimization is garbage. Once you reach a good number of families living in your town, everything simply breaks down. Aside from a general slow-down of the game (completely understandable), the AI of the villagers stops working. You'll see them stopping in their tracks, you'll see them unable to purchase food from the market, or producing the items they're supposed to. And this will bring certain death to your game. Second, while the mechanics are interesting, they are poorly balanced. You'll be forced to play basically only in a couple of ways, keeping the market strongly balanced, something that goes directly against the supposed "free market" the game tries to represent. Third, many mechanics are simply bugged. You can see your soldiers panicking around the village without a real cause, people keeping domesticating a sheep after another instead of working... a lot of things sadly. Fourth... and I'm really sad about that, but the dev... while the game was still HEAVILY under development, a DLC was released, that simply exacerbates the issue with the game's breaking. Then, the game was defined "completed", although still lacking many things. Then, the dev basically abandoned the project. Yeah he said he'll maybe start to work on the game on a future date, but the last "update" he gave was basically one year ago. He has many reasons to do that, I'm not judging WHY he did that. But the truth is that the game is not in a good state.
There are positives. In fact, I wouldn't call it a bad game, it is not a bad little colony sim. The ultimate issue is for similar money you can get a game that does everything else it does better. There two points were the ultimate deciders in giving the thumbs down. 1. The game keeps crashing when I try to save it. There might be a fix to this, but once my settlement reaches a certain size this starts happening, or will say it was unable to save it. Very frustrating, especially given it doesn't always do this. 2. It feels somewhat unfinished- not like half finished, more like three quarters finished? Seven eights finished? I wouldn't thumb it down for that, especially at $25 and maybe the promise of adding more eventually, but it is asking you to buy an $7 expansion pack which to me signals they are finished with the base game and to maybe make it feel all the way complete you need to fork over more money. Looking at the expansion it looks like it has the content I feel is missing from the base game. Interacting with other Lords, warfare (?), and the like. Warfare is a big one, you get an army in the base game, but most of it is for law enforcement and killing hostile wildlife, which you can just turn off. In the hours I have played the game I have never been attacked, and the King asked to borrow my army one time. The army isn't useless, it just feels weird that that's the scope of it. To put that $32 total they are asking in perspective, Dwarf Fortress is $30 (or free!), Rimworld's base game is $35, Manor Lords is $26, Song of Syx is $25, Dawn of Man is , Norland is $30. Okay, so it seems competitive, but like I said. I feel all those games I just mentioned are complete. I have them all and am not giving them negative reviews. In fact, Rimworld and Dwarf Fortress got thumbs up from me. This game feels more like Banished, which is $20 and didn't tease me with combat mechanics that never really come to fruition. There are other games that disappointed me like this, I just mentioned Banished. Sapiens is another. I didn't give them negative reviews. Stranded: Alien Dawn I did (at least in this one you can customize your characters!) But there are other gripes here, that's just the big two. 3. I didn't realize it but data collection is on by default. Turning this off did not help with the inability to save. 4. You get to customize your Lords but not your villagers. This... feels like an oversight? Especially from a custom game start where you can only select profession, family size (still a little random), and skill level? 5. Least is being greeted with a character design that makes the Concord character roster everyone was complaining about look beautiful in comparison is one. It is one of the ugliest character designs I have ever seen, to the point that if it was more present in the game this might be my third biggest reason. I really don't understand this desire to make characters deliberately ugly, but then you do a double take in cases like this when the same isn't done for non-Black characters. Contrasting the Queen with the White blond King character is actually kind of stunning. He isn't like the pinnacle of character design but it is a night and day difference. It almost feels racist, but over my playthrough about a quarter of my villeins are homosexuals or bisexuals so I am going to assume that isn't the case and that this is just some way of sticking it to the chuds? Okay??? I think if even one of those first two things were different or two of the bottom three on my list I wouldn't have left the negative review, that's how close I was to just keeping my dumb mouth shut on it. But the longer I dwelled on these four issues the more agitated I got, so there you go.
The game was fun, but it had some issues. The map is a little small, so you cannot have all job types avaiable, which is unfortunate and the dev has abondoned the game. Definitely worth a buy, but be warned.
Why do I need a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ PhD to figure out why an NPC would just stand around and do nothing when it has all the resources it needs to do its task?
There is an issue with this game that causes it to only use 2 of the CPU cores. In my case, I'll have 2 cores maxed and 6 idle by midgame. At midgame the game lags so hard the framerate drops to 10fps. looking at the forums, it seems the game is abandoned. I really like this game and its a shame, the Dev's have a great concept and did a good job executing. At this point in time I can't recommend this game. FYI I have over 650 hours of game play.
I paid 80 cents for this slop, and I'd rather have my 80 cents back. I cannot believe some people have hundreds of hours in this slop game. What the hell is wrong with people? It looks like trash, plays about as interesting as me working on a spreadsheet at work, and runs about as good as a web based game. I couldn't even get past the first scenario. The whole time I was thinking - this is garbage, the onboarding is garbage, the graphics are garbage, the premise of the game is garbage. I was bored in 15 minutes. Every single colony sim I have ever played is better than this slop.
