I love cards, I love slight of hand, I love magic tricks. This game has all that, however, it's extremely difficult and not in a fun way. The timer is unforgiving and forces you to play fast, which is fine but it doesn't ramp up in difficulty. It's just immediately fast. Which brings us to the bad part. The cheating methods, while real and cool are not easy to do. You're expected to remember many different variables with very little practice and then they keep feeding you new methods every new table, so you don't even have time to get good at any of them. This isn't fun difficulty. This isn't even frustrating difficulty. This is just punishing difficulty for the sake of it. And it ramps up so fast and if you can't get past a game, too bad it's the only one available until you get past it. The part that I gave up on was when you needed to stack a deal with a duplicate deck, then remove the duplicates after the hand and stack the next hand and repeat. You have to do everything so quickly that you forget most the cards you pulled out of the first deck, so when you have to remove the duplicates, I'm just a blank. Couldn't do it in practice, couldn't do it in the real game. And If I spent time writing them down, time wasted, you lose. If I take a picture of them, slight time wasted, but then you have to remove all 5 cards AND stack the next deal during the same instance so the time ♥♥♥♥♥ you anyway. It either needs to be simpler with the fast time or be complicated but give you a lot more time or a different system for them to catch you rather than just how long you take to do something. I REALLY REALLY want to love this game, but not after that.
Love it
cool artstyle and good times
My Mini Game masterpiece Card Shark is sold as a game about cheating at cards, and while that's more than true, it also isn't telling the whole story. Card Shark is more like a visual novel that happens to have a bunch of small mini-games that lock progression. Just like with most visual novels, there are a number of choices that you can make that changes aspects of the story, but there really aren't branching pathways or multiple endings, just slightly different colorings to the story. Card Shark does teach real strategies that can be utilized to cheat at cards, or manipulate cards as a magician, but you're going to have a much tougher time pulling any of these off in real life than in the game, and the game affords you a LOT more leeway in how long it takes to complete a trick. However, while it's much easier to pull of the tricks in game than real life, that isn't to say that this is an easy game. The progression of the game goes as such: you pick where you'd like to go, you're taught a new strategy, you can practice the strategy under ideal conditions, and then once you're ready, you move on to the real test of skill. The strategies that you learn early on are often built upon, but with the exception of side content that lets you build up your money if you go broke, you're never really going to use an old strategy twice. So, there are about 28 different challenges for you to complete. The one issue I have with this progression is that the training rarely prepares you for the actual changes that occur in the tests of skill. Almost every time you have to deal cards to a specific person, the training will have you deal that card to the final player. In the actual test, that is essentially never the case. This caused me to mess up several times because I was so focused on completing the trick quickly that I wasn't paying attention to the fact that the trick had changed slightly. All the training is done without a time limit, while the tests all have a fairly strict time limit, and taking too long early on will fail you in the end. This doesn't ruin the game, but I wish that the training, especially the final training before you get to the test, had a little more varience or some kind of timer to let you know if you're really ready to move on or not. Luckily, this game is much more than just the interesting card tricks and slight of hand. I don't want to go into details about what else this game has going on, but I can say that it's well written and a VERY interesting story, with a lot of happenings that you won't likely see coming. This game is strictly for people who like interesting stories and getting good at somewhat obtuse mini games. If that does sound interesting though, this game is a real gem.
