Cairn: Mathair’s Curse is a Scottish story-driven JRPG about a boy, his mother and loss, set in a world steeped in Celtic mythology.
⠀
Featuring:
30-hour single-player JRPG spanning 14 chapters
Four main party members, each with their own personal story that weaves into the larger narrative
Deep worldbuilding with vibrant environments, lore-rich NPCs, and side quests
Strategic turn-based combat with items, skills, and unique classes
Puzzles and exploration to unlock new areas, uncover hidden presents, and discover secrets
Explore hand-crafted locations, from quaint seaside villages to ancient underground caverns and secret high-tech lairs. The world of Cairn: Mathair's Curse is inspired by life in the Scottish Highlands in the early 2000s.
Fight unusual and wacky enemies, including wild roaming haggis', bewildered stop signs and an odd group of cultists. Combat is classic turn-based, with the use of items and party member skills to complement strategic gameplay. Players must watch out for enemy weaknesses and play to their strengths! Upgrading weapons and equipment is also important, along with buying items and other upgrades found throughout the world.
The soundtrack of Cairn: Mathair’s Curse draws on both traditional Scottish music and classic SNES-era JRPGs. Across more than 100 tracks, players encounter bagpipe-rock battle themes, melodic motifs for each main character, and sweeping emotional pieces that underscore the story’s moving moments.

I really loved this game. It's a lovely homage to Earthbound/Mother games and told a great story with lots of moments of humour, sadness and darkness. The only change I'd want is for the dialogie boxes to be light backgrounds with black text, instead of black backgrounds with white text but otherwise, no notes!
It's scratching the Earthbound itch in a way that other, similarly inspired games have not -- because it's familiar while also being its own charming little thing. Hats off to Ross McRitchie, the love and care is extremely apparent.
SCOTTISH EARTHBOUND
Check out the full review on 2 Headed Hero! A charming Scotland-flavored take on the JRPG with whimsical characters, challenging fights, and a tone that swings from comedic to chilling. An absolute hidden gem. What other game has you beat the hell out of a fencepost as a combat tutorial? https://youtu.be/dmOukInf_g4
Very good game overall, the story and characters where well made and the combat was good my only problem is that some of the mid-late game bosses feel weak and end up feeling like tanky-er enemies. I found normal enemies to be more dangerous than bosses most of the time. Also so items have attributes that are not explained in there item descriptions like a red hood item that seeming allows characters to do double basic attacks, also the elemental weakness and resistance system for party members in underutilized with only one party member being weak to most magic element damage types and seemingly no items that change elemental weakness or resist to certain damage types. but overall a good game but it doesn't have much that makes it stand out or make it feel super unique other than the inclusion of a lot of Scottish culture.
Amazing game so far. It reminds me of Earthbound, while still being its own thing
this game got me obsessed with it when i first started playing it but the one negative thing or atleast a few negative things about it 1. the economy is in shambles it costs way too much for healing items which very stupid but i guess they did kind of rectify this issue with the protagonist being able to heal 2. there is one item that is just better than everything else it was a weapon that a normal attack did just three attacks which is stupidly overpowered 3.in the chapter with the technomancer as party leader i got stupidly lost i had no idea where i was going 4. several points of no return which arent the most enjoyable but i guess it is what it is overal really good game with a thought out story i do thoroughly love this game with all my heart
Nice RPG
This has got to be one of the best Mother-like games I have played in a long time. The gameplay is fun, the enemies are all unique, the dialogue is fun to read, and the number one thing I love about this game is the turned based combat, sure it's a little slow, but it's only such a tiny issue. The game frames do stutter a little bit, but I never see it as much of a problem, but one thing I do hope get's added in the future, is the option to toggle Alex's flat cap in the options menu. Maybe one day we'll get another great game such as this one, keep up the amazing work.
A little hard but I really enjoyed it, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good RPG with an interesting atmosphere
This game is a wonderful little gem, if one that's a bit rough around the edges. The combat is somewhat clunky, with an awkward and unbalanced difficulty curve (which gets harshly spiked when an enemy with AoE Stun move shows up). Throughout the game, I encountered numerous small visual glitches where characters or objects would disappear or flicker oddly, and in general the game lacks consistency in a lot of places. But, if you can get past the difficult curve (which appears to have been tweaked with a patch, and which I ultimately had only a small amount of trouble with), this is a game very much worth playing for the story, characters, and unique world with a cultural twist that you don't see often.
