Button City is a relatively obscure 2021 indie title from Albuquerque, New Mexico studio "Subliminal", published in collaboration with "Wings". The game can be roughly described as a wholesome, 3D, narrative, pont and click adventure title, where a new, shy, but compassionate kid in town strives to discover friends, win highscores at the arcade, help his new community and save the arcade (the titular "Button City") from being shutdown by corporate greed. Button City's incredible minimalist dioramic environmental style is nothing short of amazing and the humor always lands for at least a good smirk or chuckle. The writing is solid, the characters great and surprisingly multifaceted and the minigames, music, character designs, names and overall game presentation are superbly cozy. I loved all of my nine hours spent in Button City and the 5.87 Euro sale price feels downright like stealing. I'll be purchasing future titles by this developer and I hope you give them a chance, too! This one tugged on my heartstrings! Also, if you like this game, feel free to wishlist "Button City: Soccer Days" here on Steam, to support the developers! Button City was admittedly more than I ever expected, from an Animal Crossing vibe with the facial expressions and animations to a few surprisingly deep characters in an otherwise upbeat game. Do not let the aesthetics fool you into thinking this game is simple; it is an obvious labor of love. I did encounter a few bugs and there were a few quests that were annoying backtracking, but I would play it all over again.
This game is adorable!! From the characters to the story to the setting, it's all extremely cute and sweet. You spend your time exploring the world and completing little side stories, broken up by three recurring mini-games styled after arcade games, all of which I enjoyed. Most of the game plays best on controller, but the rhythm minigame is practically unplayable except on keyboard. My only other complaint is that sometimes it's confusing exactly who you're supposed to talk to and where to find them, or where to find all the side stories, but with the help of guides that didn't slow me down too much.
The art style is great, the characters and writing are fun, but it is just sluggish and floaty and does not feel good to actually play. This is going to sound like a comparison that's out of left field, but you know how in Red Dead Redemption 2 you frequently had to approach interactable items at the exact right angle before you could actually interact with them? Button City does that a lot too, and it is incredibly frustrating. The way the camera slowly pans down and in when you try to talk to someone else is pretty annoying, too. A damn shame, really.
I bought this game because of the cute low poly look and I really enjoyed this game!! Its such a cute and silly story line and the mini games in the game are so much fun!! It feels like a silly story about being the coolest kid in the suburbs and city and all the side stories it includes are lots of fun
It's like playing through a kids cartoon. Very cute and chill.
i'll never look at toast the same again 10/10.
Very cute little game! Charming characters, heartwarming low-stakes story, and pleasant aesthetics. I can easily recommend it to anyone looking for a cozy story-based game!
Not terribly long, but surprisingly substantial! Story and characters were cute, graphics were vibrant and pleasing, and the varied game modes were a welcome treat! Very good for $19.99!
10/10 Would cry again. Stay Tuff! Very underrated game with some fun mini games at its core with an interesting world theme. It has for sure got a special spot in the library now
