flutter away was very lukewarm to me, so not necessarily a hard 'i wouldn't recommend', but i wouldn't recommend at the current price point. i finished it in under an hour, and i don't think you should have to achievement hunt to wring more substance out of a game. for what it is, it's definitely cute and wholesome, and there's a sweet story. but i've enjoy other explore-and-photograph games of this genre much more because they're not so linear...it took all the fun out of photographing everything when the journal told me specifically what to look for on each day. i'm glad i got it on sale because i would've been pretty put out for full price :/ if it is on sale, it can be an enjoyable hour of your time, but i just can't recommend going out of your way to grab it. i think a bigger exploration area and less hand-holding would've really added to the experience for me
I'd recommend this game if you like the graphics enough to want to walk up and down a few short paths like that with limited freedom and trivial gameplay. Or if you're really into butterflies and moths and don't mind that your entomologist character actually seems more into capybaras. Or if you're really into capybaras and don't mind that their portrayal is pure fantasy. I would not recommend this game if you're looking for a compelling story, for actual exploration, or for something educational beyond some butterfly facts. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy this game. I found it very pretty, and I'm not complaining about its relaxing take on the Amazon rainforest where nothing can harm you or your cute animal friends. The soundscape is well done and supported by chill and very low key music. The scope of the game is very limited, but that was probably wise considering the budget was likely on the low side and anything more could easily result in a glitchy mess. Instead, we get a very small and railroaded but pretty polished experience. It's very handholdy (except for the secrets), but I guess that's nice for inexperienced players. I missed some options though, not least for getting rid of that white dot in the middle of the screen, or preferably a full screenshot mode for all those nice views. Heads up that one of the 5 days has lightning effects that can't be turned off. The journal texts don't read like they were written by a researcher. "I heard in a podcast"? That's probably true about the dev, but an actual entomologist headed for the Amazon should have learnt a very relevant fact like that during her studies. Calling butterfly behaviour "cliché romantic"?? Is that supposed to appeal to a female audience? They were literally just competing to stick their genitals together, not having candle light dinners or giving each other chocolates and flowers lmao. The capybara behaviour... Well, maybe the animation budget was used up at that point? Some facts that take a few minutes of internet research to find but that you couldn't guess from this game: - Capybaras are semi-aquatic and need to be in the water a lot so their skin doesn't dry out - They are very social animals and almost always live in groups; exceptions are almost always young males - They are very vocal, making a lot of different sounds -
Their babies always stay close to the group for protection and are nursed by any female in the group
Completionists and achievement hunters might like to know that one achievement is kind of grindy and some of the "secrets" are quite obscure. [strike]Which I guess is the closest you'll get to a researcher experience during this game[/strike] I don't know, it's a game about research so I would have expected a bit more on that front even for the parts that aren't about butterflies. Overall I still found it a pleasant experience, though. * * * If you like chill and story-driven games, check out my curator Peaceful Adventures and Stories. Flutter Away is a excellent game. Takes photos of flora and fauna in a cozy ambient. The designs are beautiful and the music is chill. It's the perfect game to relaxing. The only negative point is it's a little too short, I would have liked to explore more... It tooks me about 1h30 to finish it. I highly recommend it!
I really like this game. At first I thought it was just a simple photo game, but it is more than that. I ended up walking around slowly, noticing small details, and enjoying how calm everything feels. There is no pressure in the game, which felt really nice and relaxing. During the game, you explore the rainforest, set up your campsite, and take photos of butterflies, frogs, plants, and other small animals. You add them to your journal and complete small tasks each day, like finding new creatures or exploring new areas. Sometimes there are hidden things to discover too, which makes exploring more fun. I really loved seeing the capybaras, one of my favorite animals! You can slowly get close to them and even pet them later. There are also baby capybaras, which are super cute. You also need to move carefully so you don’t scare animals away. This made me feel like I had to be very gentle and quiet while playing. One of my favorite parts was just stopping to look around and take photos, because the game looks very beautiful and peaceful, with nice sounds and music. Overall, it is a very calm, cozy game. It is perfect if you just want to relax and enjoy nature!
Normally I love the games made by Runaway, however, this one wasn't for me. I was hoping for a game where I could go off and explore, however, this one guides you along and really isn't very open world at all. It tells you what to do and how to do it, if you are looking for something like that go for it. The graphics are cute, and the story seems super simple but its also somewhat nice. However, for what it is the price seems step to me, so I would wait for a sale.
This has to be the shortest game in all of the games? Maybe I should have known better? But it was not worth the money if you ask me. Its a cute game but needs more content..... time? Or exploration? IDk don't bother unless you want to pay the money and beat it in under an hr.
Very wholesome and chill. Only downside is that its pretty short and the area isn't that big. Still nice tho.
Thought it was too guided. I wanted something more freeform and exploration based, but this forces you to look for the animals/photos it wants from you at certain times. It's too structured for this style game. Makes it less cozy and more forced
Loved it! Super relaxing and cute. I just missunderstood an achievement hence the play time. Not much replay value once you got all achievements.
best ever i felt like i was in starclan
