Experienced on the Meta Quest 2
You can view my review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/UW4ZqUWtoJI If you enjoy classic tile based dungeon crawlers, then you will probably enjoy this. If you don't enjoy old-school RPG dungeon crawlers, then you will probably not enjoy this game. However, it is free. Since it is free, I can give an easy recommendation for old school RPG fans. Your movement is limited just like in the old grid-based movement. You can move forward along a pre-determined, mostly square type movement. All your actions are point and click, just like the old days. You have cool downs on your actions. You can choose between a warrior class, a rogue class, and a mage. Heal up and get your mana full with potions. Find treasure, kill trash, move down the dungeon, upgrade your skills, rinse and repeat. Game is running on the Unity Engine. On my RTX 3080, I was getting steady 90 fps. Besides the grid-based forward movement, you also have snap turning available (you can choose degree of turn). I did not run into any bugs. I do think this game needs more music & better sounds. It could use more landscape variety (a lot of the rooms look exactly the same). The animations could be better. But hey, it's free. I can't really complain too much. It's better than most free stuff on Steam VR. Rate 6/10.
If you enjoyed my review, please consider joining my Steam Curator Group. Good tile-based dungeon crawler, I just wish the floors and loot were randomly generated like most dungeon crawlers, it's always the same maps, the same enemies at the same spots, the first playthrough is fun, the others are pointless.
👑 Powered by HoI 4 Deu Curators group in German / English 👑

Follow Main group
Follow Second group
English: -----------------------> Burial Stone by Ofer Rubinstein is a classic 3D dungeon crawler in VR. We can play Burial Stone on the monitor in flat, or in VR. And that's where the problem comes in. Why should I play this game in VR? It's a classic "retro" crawler, which means that we only move "box by box" through the basement, just like we used to do on the Amiga. This, however, in a fluid animation. We have to learn spells and skills according to the genre and can equip our hero with loot we find in the dungeons. There are currently 3 different character types to choose from. The combat is also classic, we choose a weapon and the opponent. Click Boom. For me in VR in 2022 a nogo, but Burial Stone can also be played in flat. Whether it is more fun on the monitor, I do not know, I simply have not tried it. I found the controls in VR very uncomfortable and awkward. Unfortunately, not much is explained, but genre connoisseurs will certainly get the hang of it quickly. Beginners will certainly have their difficulties. Too bad. The graphics are simple to rudimentary. The light of the torch doesn't seem particularly atmospheric to me. The sounds are just as adequate, but not particularly impressive. It's good that a demo of the game is offered, so anyone interested can make up their own mind. Burial Stone can certainly be played well while sitting, but then in front of the monitor. In VR, it is rather something for hardcore genre fans. Thumbs up because it works. In the short review only an informative. (why can't I put informative here too?). 👀Dark Cellars🎊 on my curator page. 👑 Powered by HoI 4 Deu Curators group in German / English 👑

Follow Main group
Follow Second group

This review is provided by The Gilded Maw - A Dungeon Crawling steam group.
This review was made while the game was free (before patch 1.0.6 - July 29th). I plan to update it soon, consider it out of date until then.
Synopsis
Burial Stone is a medieval-fantasy first person grid-&-turn-based RPG that requires a VR headset and motion controllers to play. It contains fantasy violence, some blood, and comically over-sized bones spread throughout the dungeon's levels. It can be rather quiet, leading to an eerie sensation of being alone. There's very little in the way of music, and no story to speak of. During my time, I didn't encounter any game-breaking bugs, but one achievement seems to be bugged (Entered Boss Hall). The weapons might also be unselected in the menu despite being visually equipped, but I didn't notice this having an adverse effect on gameplay. The final screen is also far too long, and could use a skip button, or be shortened.
In and out, quicker than you'd think
Introduction It makes me feel like a monster to not recommend. It's free, so you're not losing anything financially. However, you are devoting your time while playing it as opposed to any numerous other tasks or games you could be playing. If the game had something going for it, a novelty of some kind, I would give it an immediate thumbs up. This is clearly a passion project being soldiered by most likely one person. Which is highly unfortunate, as there is nary a thing I can recall for the hour of playing that warrants a download. It's lacking in a lot of fundamental ways, and what is present is rather cumbersome, and to be honest, not very well implemented. Gameplay This game doesn't feel particularly fun to play. Movement in a grid-based game locks you to the board, and this restriction can breed innovative design. In Burial Stone, it simply limits the player with no benefit, other than preventing the player from running into walls or getting stuck against the scenery. The UI doesn't play nice while moving either, which can be annoying when you just want to click on a healing item while on the go. Combat is clunky and unrewarding, highly RNG based on whether you hit, and how devastating you are. You'll watch in dismay as one of your skills or spells fails to produce any meaningful damage if it hits. When it doesn't, you've wasted mana, and the enemy may have struck you with considerable damage. Which results in you fumbling your next turn to chug a healing item or potion, which can be very rare early on. Almost every enemy is functionally the same, minus some status effects or use of range weaponry, both from singular entities. It's all very bland and straightforward, even the final boss lacks in mechanical depth. All this leading to the biggest disappointment, the interactivity. VR has its place in gaming, wherein most games are going to be short and provide some level of gameplay immersion inaccessible without the headset. Pulling levers, swinging swords, and physically leaning around corners are all elements that are gimmicky in nature, but are satisfying in their own way. None of this is present in any capacity. You click on skills to make your next attack do that. You click on levers to make them open doors. You click on items in menus to buy, use or equip them (if the game doesn't do that for you sometimes). The game totes that your only source of light is the torch, but it might as well be light emanating from you to begin with, because it's never used in any meaningful manner. It calls into question why it even needed to be a VR game, it would've work about as well not in VR. All this, yet I can still see the potential here, a lot of ideas that need exploring to flesh out the game into something that could honestly be rather enjoyable and unique. A lot of VR tends to require the player to be constantly active, it's nice when one comes along that plays at the pace of the player's decisions.
Dungeon Crawling Core Value
Burial Stone is a dungeon crawler defined by the older, classical descriptive used to identify a type of game from the 80s/90s; a grid-based first person rpg, sometimes referred to as a gridder, or blobber if it contains more than one actively controlled protagonist. The inherit core value of the experience is, in my opinion, a level 2. "The game contains dungeons and/or dungeon-like environments that serves the purpose of scenery or change of scenery. The environment has little significance, but overall attempts to present a dungeon crawling experience in some way other than purely/entirely cosmetic." The whole experience is an immersive one to a degree, and can often feel rather eerie in the silence, with only the sounds of your torch breaking up the quiet. However, the lack of interactivity hurts it greatly. It's like a horror house where you get to see the things, but always keep a modest distance from them.
Final Thoughts
I didn't want this is come off so negative. In the end, it's free. If you want to give it a shot and have a VR headset, there's nothing really stopping you. It's an hour of your time, and if you feel like it's worth marveling at a passion project, then don't let me stop you. It's a quaint game, and you might enjoy it. Heck, it could be the inspiration you need to start your own project.
Hallo Ihr Lieben, also Ich bin ehrlich. Burial Stone is a Free VR game that is a turn based dungeon crawler. It worked on my HTC Vive and Index system, looked ok, played ok, sounded ok. Has 21 steam achievements. You can play a Warrior, Mage or Rogue. It is rogue like game, if you die, you get sent back to menu to start new game. The movement is like a short hop to the next square in the direction you pressed and you can select snap turns. Not sure what the Demo version of this game is like. Why is there a Demo version of a Free game?. CONS: RNG is not your friend here. No music or story. Has no instructions or tutorial. Try this game, you might like it.
I enjoy this dungeon crawler!! I like it because it's challenging and the game dev clearly put in some time --- and it shows in the combat, the enemies and the level design!! TWO THUMBS UP! And at the time of writing, it's even on sale!! DOUBLE EXTRA RECOMMENDED!! I can only imagine how cool it is in VR!!
Жена сказала, что если на этом обзоре наберётся 10 лайков и 5 наград, то она подарит ящик пива. Мужики, выручайте!
UPDATE: After talking with Sargon (dev) and seeing his commitment, re-bought the game (refund was already granted, ha) and just finished it. Liked it, simple, satisfied with it. Would love updated content to come back in the future. Thanks ! No problems. Only a couple times when a snake spat venom on me (green screen) the menus and map got a tad outside the screen, but it resolved after. No biggie. --------------------------------------- OLD : I liked very much all I saw while I played but had some problems (could be my system, don't know) ! I FOUND A FIX : For game not launching, or if you got lucky to menu, it didn't respond to mouse clicks. FIX: *Uninstall Steam VR*. Success ! And game started to menu PLUS menu registered the mouse clicks, so could start the game and play. Liked it, wanted it, stoked to play it. (But, a crash ocurred in 2nd level. Sadly on the border of 2 hours, I refunded: not enough time for safely trying it for no more problems). If reassured by other reviews that there are no problems I will be more than happy to re-buy the game ! **** More Notes before resolving the problem : Bought the game for playing it NON VR. Launched many times but didn't show image nor sound (but running in task manager, killed the task, repeat). Tried the usual: "-nohmd" in the launch parameters. And Uncheck the box for "Use Desktop Game Theatre while SteamVR is active" Problem persisted. Used borrowed Quest 2: game launched. Then, without Quest 2, the game started but menu unresponding till I tried the Steam VR uninstall: Success !
This is a well implemented game with a unique turn based approach for VR! The inventory system is really well laid out. If you like dungeon crawlers I would recommend this game!
