I thought I was about to play a casual visual novel, but it felt like a slow fall into the subconscious, definitely more on the experimental side, trying to get into your head and connect on a personal level - a deceivingly artistic game, doing a lot, by doing very little. While the game may not look all that great in some parts, the actual experience was very strange but in a good way, I thought the narrative and the different visual perspectives complemented to mood very well, and to be honest, I think some of the panels don't look all that bad. Initially, I thought there was something wrong with the dialogue, it's almost like the game is skipping the story every few seconds so it's very hard to understand, maybe it was the translation, but it seems to me some of the dialogue was designed as 'noise', you know like being in the room and hearing things you don't really care about, or talking to yourself in your head, I think the game is very much an introspective experience. Interestingly, I felt like 80% of the game was formatted as having one text line in the middle of the screen, not exactly how most people would approach a game like this, but I think the choice of sound effects and music made it work, it's a bit uncanny and alluring at the same time. The game is around 1 hour with a few optional achievements, there is a bit of gameplay with the walking segments and optional interactions, but for the most part, it's a text game, although I would not say that it feels like a visual novel. On the surface, the story is very simple, going to school and talking to people, but ultimately overcoming the routine, crushing your fears, and maybe finding love.
Pros:
(+) Even though I think the game felt a bit uneven, I think the experimental side of storytelling works well in some parts of the game, I was just a bit confused with the pacing, but it seems it was intentional once I got the full picture. (+) You might look at the game and think it's kinda ugly, but I like that you often present the panels in a way that complement the conversation and the mood, and most of the pictures actually look nice once you get going, simple but it does the job I think, mostly because it's very stylized. (+) I assume it's not original SFX/OST, but I thought the game had a good sense of dreamy atmosphere, I enjoyed the mood.
Feedback:
Nitpicks: - the only part of the art I did not like were the 2D segments, and it's mainly the coloring. I think the solid colors during the visual novel parts work very well, I think you should have a more consistent feel for the game. It's okay to have a simple layout, it just needs to match your art panels. It felt like the character needed to move a bit faster, especially up and down, and maybe make it more obvious where the exits are so you not backtracking. You should try to do more of those interactive elements like watching tv, having a bit more optional content will help with immersion. Overall Thoughts: 7/10 I like that you tried something different, I think it can be very interesting experience if you let it. Some of the writing felt very odd, you seemingly kept switching between normal dialogue and having emotional bursts, but I don't know, I thought the experience was kinda neat. Probably could use a bit more consistency with the visuals between 2D gameplay and visual novel so you have some color theme going, but overall, I liked it.
This game is interesting. It's hard to say something to sum it up. It's art, more than anything else. I guess it's "slice of life", but of a schoolgirl who lives in toxicity. First of all, I want to say - I love the style of this. The minimalism; the way it launches itself straight in without any introductions, and the art. Limited palette, big text. Despite being sketch art, the composition and art direction are great. The story is authentic feeling, and at times quite hard hitting, though there is some light too. The player is not spoon-fed the world and context, leaving it largely to interpretation until late on, and I appreciate that the author respects the intelligence of the player. There are a few issues with the game though - the minimalist style of writing means that sometimes it's hard to tell which character is speaking in a scene, there are numerous translation errors and poor choices that mean that sometimes it's hard to understand. And sometimes that takes the impact out of a scene. Also, there were a few occasions where there's too little colour contrast between the text and background (white on white in scenes where the background is monochrome). This game is an experience though. It finds beauty in ugliness. I do recommend it overall.
The awful, incorrect translation ruined the experience. I just couldn't take the story seriously. The game barely requires any input from you, it might as well just have been a pixel art movie. However, the art is very striking. The minimal colour palette paired with the fantastic framing and perspectives of the pixelart turns the whole thing into a screenshot simulator. Even if the translation was faulty, i could still see the light in all the dialogue and the story. So if the devs try another project in the future, i will certainly check it out. I just hope the next time the gameplay will be more involved and that we get a professional translation.
010101010100011101010011010100110101100101000011010100010101100101000001010010010101011101010111
10111000101110100011101011100000001011100010111010001110101110000000111010100010000000101110001111111111111110000000101110001111111111111110000000111010111
▽
110001010010000101001011101100100010000001010111101100100011110101001100111101110110100101110000111110110010110101000001101100100000111001001101111000000010010100011011
Tide Girl: Phenonema is a very experimental visual novel. There are short walkaround sections, the text autoscrolls with the speaker almost always of screen, and the visual style being very reminiscent of Monogatari. I loved all of it, especially the music, which really suits the introspective yet intense nature of this VN. You follow a schoolgirl named Jing Xi through her daily school life that's upended when one of her classmates, Ku Yue, takes a sudden interest in her. This story dwells a lot on toxic nature of gossip, with bits of scifi worldbuilding sprinkled throughout. Despite having issues with the translation I found TG:P a fascinating read and plan on shilling it to all my friends. Toxic yuri ftw!
