I've been eyeing this game for awhile now, but didn't pull the trigger until the 93% sell because the game didn't promise support for Keyboards, thankfully I had the option in settings to fix that issue, so, so far my biggest issues have been no sound settings at all, meaning the music is overpowering the effects, in my personal opening, and sometimes I hit a box and then the character hits something else instead, but honestly other then sound issues it's been fun so far.
One of the few rogue-likes I would genuinely consider actually like Rogue. This game has the potential of greatness, and is hella fun, but is dragged down by some significant pitfalls. -elements are of very little usefulness. Beyond magic door openers, elemental enchantments on weapons are just mild DoTs or semi-common immobilize status effects. For enemies and hazards is not much different, and any hazard floors are just a slight annoyance, chipping health away while you walk over them. -combat can come down to special move spam. They're the best attacks, recharge fast, deal AoE, high damage, and circumvent block, AND give invincibility while casting them AAAAAAND are likely to stun enemies. I'm not saying nerf em, but making regular attacks more useful and adding more special move variety would have been nice. -RNG: Nature of the beast for a rogue-like, I know, but going a full dungeon with no food, or not getting potion ingredients, or just walking into a room full off super powered enemies just feels bull at times. also I'm convinced the alters of the gods are just random no matter how much gold you give them. -the art style. I like the idea of the ASCII old-school style, but what I don't like is that everything looks the same at times. More detail or shading could go a long way to better defining environments and enemies. -Classes. Warrior, Ranger, and Amazon feel largely the same, with the mage having the slight difference of having a staff instead of a shield, the only difference between the classes is starting health, player models, and starting skills, but they all share the same skill trees and with no starting gear, they can all play somewhat samey over time, unless you deliberately restrict yourself to their playstyle. Would be good to have unique skill trees with some skill overlap, such as warrior, amazon, and ranger all having archery skill, but the ranger starts with it, amazon its a little down her skill tree, and warrior has to invest further to get it, and the warrior has a unique skill that gives him more defense from armor, while mage is the only one that can use magic All critique aside, this game is fun, and I'd recommend it. It has a lot of classic game design ideas fairly well implemented that create a solid dungeon crawler experience. I'm pretty sure this is the closest to rogue a rogue-like gets, but as an isometric hack n slash. I know this game is old, and will never get improvements, but its nice to dream.
fun game
this was sold at walmart on retail, why?
Tried this game on PS4 when I was younger and yeah, thus game will kick your butt until you figure out what you are doing. This is a rougelike, dying and permadeath are to be expected. This game also runs incredibly well on the Deck, and needs no adjustment to run.
