Very pretty, but the riddles are very very easy. Mostly it is "find a button" or "turn the circle until the open space aligns with something". A few sliding puzzles are difficult, but I find those rather annoying. On the plus side you can get hints where to continue and you can skip a puzzle if you want.
Creative, fresh, original; all words describing the uniqueness of Boxes and it's ability to make the player loose track of time apply to this game. Recreating the scenerio where you 're a child again with it's favorite toy, and so fascinated that you can spend all day playing with it; Boxes provided an excellent opportunity to relax and have fun. Thoroughly spellbinding. Rated 9 out of 10.
I hate that my primary defense of the Big Loop Studios games has to be, "they are what they are." My only criticisms are that the games lack things that they don't pretend to contain: a compelling coherent story, a persistent environment to explore, characters, anything more than the loosest themes about power and freedom and order and chaos. You can't help but compare this one to The Room. The gadgets are beautiful but less plausible. The puzzles steal from Big Loop's previous games rather than finding a way to be original. You have only the slightest sense that there is a larger environment around you besides each box. And if you've played the whole The Room series, those games added a Lovecraftian twist. This game, as with Doors: Paradox, just jumps from style to style. This box is Celtic, this box is Tesla, this box is Japanese, this box is Aztec. The sound is very good, but as with Doors: Paradox, you won't miss a thing if you play the whole game on mute. The puzzles are easy. Like, except for a couple, really easy. Like, click this and it solves itself easy. If it isn't incredibly obvious what to do, you just haven't found the right piece to slide open yet. All the way back to Myst, there have been games with beautiful gadgets that couldn't possibly work, with little sense of who built them or what they are other than arbitrary machines, with little world building that isn't just reading notes. But Myst had characters and a sense of threat, presence, loneliness, mystery, and --as a game -- increasing difficulty. This has none of those elements. But I can't down-vote it. It's just too pretty and tactile, too satisfying to spin and click and crank. It manages to be even shorter than Doors: Paradox -- it took me 4 hours -- with even less variety of toys to play with. No vampire castle, no Blade Runner neon world, no music or arcade theming, which ought to mean that they traded those things for a persistent world. They didn't. But it's a toy, and there's no sense in complaining that a toy isn't a different toy. I just wonder if there's anyone contributing to these games who could actually write a narrative and integrate puzzles into it.
Sleek, stylish, well crafted. Looks amazing even running at normal settings on my crappy laptop. The puzzles make intuitive sense and very rarely leave you with no idea how to proceed. I enjoyed this very much and my only complaint is that I wish it was longer! :)
Nota 8/10
