Quick Review on this: The story, characters and voice acting is good. Interesting here and there but overall solid enough to keep playing the game. The bad: as many others already wrote, there are so many small things that add up to make the game frustrating. There are so many cutscenes you need to manually skip all the time! Skip time of day? Custcene for sleep and one for change time of day. Cooking? Skip animation Craft something from a blueprint? custscene Start a mission? Loading screen - cutscene - maybe a second one showing new enemies At the beginning of the game it is fine, but it gets so frustrating really quick and you have to hold a button to skip ... Want to sell or craft multiple things at once ? Bad luck, do everything one by one. (each craft you need to skip a cutscene) If you want to selll 100 cactus for some cash, click 100 times on sell ... Repeat a mission - custscene - end mission - custscene and then you are outside and you need to run back in, to repeat another mission (cutscenes again of course). Also you can not change the loadout you currently have when you do "repeat mission". You need to die in the mission to get he option to change loadout and try again. (or do it before you start the mission). Overall the gameplay/combat is good once you get used to it. Most weapons feel super weak, the shotgun was for a long time the go to against everything. There are some really good combinations of gear that are fun and strong tho. The challanges per mission/bounty are okay - use specific loadout, find a hidden stash, do it in under xx time, do not get hit. You will play some missions multiple times until you have everything. "Exploration" is okay. Some chest to find for lore, blueprints and collectibles. With all the small things aside, it's solid and fairly easy to get all achievements if you are into this. Would I recommend this game? No. For me there are too many menial tasks/chores, cutscenes, and just unnessecary time waste. Also it looks like the game is abandoned. Last patch was like 5 months ago and you get what you get. No bug fixes or improvements will come anymore (just a speculation on my part). This game could be really good if the dev puts in a little more time and effort to polish it and make it a fun experience overall, but as of now .. difficult to recommend. With Mixed - it is pretty much where this game should be right now.
Bounty Star is a good game, with a lot of positive elements, a few minor negative ones, and one MAJOR issue that will roadblock you if you're not careful. Frankly, it's the opening. It's mechanically limited, slow, long, and not clear where it's going to end. What do I mean by that? The game will say you're out of the Prologue, but that's not the end of the tutorial. The training wheels don't come off until you finish "Chapter 4 - Utay Adakai". This is the point where you can fully customize the mech, grow crops, and work more organically to your next plot objective, instead of being lead around the nose. With that being said, getting that far should only take about 3 hours, and on the other end, you now have several minor new toys, and one MAJOR positive - the Gun Cancel. Ah yes, the Gun Cancel. THIS is what's missing from the beginning, where your ranged attacks feel worthless, and melee feels too sluggish. Now, you can cancel into a special Ranged Attack / Reposition / Reload (unique to each weapon type), that can be chained into more ranged moves, or more melee moves. After that, it's about the loop - and let's be clear here, not all mech games play the same. If your feedback is just "It's not MechWarrior!", or "It's not AC!", please shut up and open your mind to the idea that mechs can work at many scales, tech levels, and gameplay styles. What IS the loop? It's basically Monster Hunter with mechs - go out to do a job with a loadout on your mech. Get rewarded with cash and crafting materials. Come back to base, grow crops, craft upgrades, buy new gear, repeat until a plot mission opens up. Some nice selling points - enemies don't drop unique crafting materials, like MH, which means you can just BUY crafting materials on the market. It's cheaper to use your own loot, of course, but if you're only short a few things, you just fill the gap with money. Same with crops, the food buffs are quite substantial, but since you're growing the ingredients, you can also sell the surplus for more cash. Alright, if this isn't MW or AC, then what is it? Look at the publisher, man - if that name doesn't already fill you in on the types of narrative beats we'll be seeing here, go dig into their catalog a bit. This is a character driven story, less about insane robot fights, and more about finding the will to stand back up again, get in the damn robot, and finding a way to actually LIVE instead of just surviving. If you want anime nonsense, MW history, or AC deep lore (I like all 3, btw), it's not here - but there is a cool post-apoc setting with some unique ideas, well fleshed out in optional logs you can find. There's a story that might resonate with the older gamer, someone who's had to let go and move on before in their life, someone who's had to make the choice to get up again. This game isn't perfect, it's got some warts and imperfections, but at the end of the day... If I had the setup Clem has, I'd be out there in my Raptor, too.
Abandonware
We got Armored Core at home.
Good game! but I hope there be more freedom of customization...
A fun mix of mech combat base cultivation, has a bit of a slow start, and definitely favors combat in terms of what you'll spend your time doing in game, but has a charming story and art style, with combat and customization that gives a decent amount of depth for its low complexity.
Runs great, tons of character. Love the mecha design too.
Getting a new gun or farm tool or pet or improvement after most every mission means there is always something new to try out. Fun to go out and blow stuff up with a new gun, and fun to come home and make a better tostada because you can craft a griddle. Do not overlook the trick system!!! So vital for crazy damage.
As much I love Mecha games and this has a very good core the game is broken there is one mission that's called save our sprinklers that's has the whole loading screen crossing the field and the mission cannot be completed, the worse thing is that this stupid mission is MANDATORY to progress in the story so you cannot complete the game due to a broken mission I really want to love this game as has good combat mechanics, the aesthetic is amazing and the combination of steam punk robots with Dinosaurs and wildlife is unique but I cannot recommend a game that cannot be completed.
Overall a competent experience all around, but it is held back by more than a few factors. Gameplay wise Bounty Star is split between a very lightcore farm/base sim where you can grow a few crops, raise a few animals, and take care of daily chores. In a narrative sense this works well with the games theming and the character's arc, but from a gameplay perspective it falls flat around halfway through and just serves to take up time. The main offended being that you shouldn't be running out of money making half the tasks pointless from a functional standpoint, and even narratively I wouldn't say they truly pay off or matter too much and also don't evolve much to provide any deeper experience than do-upkeep get-item. The other meat of the game, the mech combat, is fine. But much like the base/farm-sim it only goes so deep. Most enemies are not a challenge and the gameplay errs closer to hack-and-slash games with a sneeze of Third-person-shooter and things like a recharging heal and dodges with i-frames means you can just bulldog your way through any challenge. Thus unless you want to complete every level's bonus objective or live-capture most enemies (which has no story bearing) then the game is overly easy and simple. Those criticisms aside, the mech comes with a fair few ways to cancel actions into eachother and weave Melee and ranged combat with quick-boosts to very very satisfying effect. there is also a nice selection of weapons, and decent customization. The story that is there, a mix of frontiersman western and post-apoc-rebuild, is satisfying enough if a bit standard and awkwardly told at times, and at around 8-15 hours the game won't overstay it's welcome. Thus I have to suggest it since I do very much like this kind of lightly-chunky mech action, Just go expecting an arcadey straight-forward game.
