This game is fun, but I still don't recommend it yet. By far my biggest gripe is that your allies are complete morons, both in combat and on the world map. On the world map, Supplies are how you replenish ammo, torpedoes, repair kits, medkits, and fuel. Supplies are kept at allied bases, but you have no say which bases receive Supplies or how many. Allied convoys will take supplies from these bases and drive around the map aimlessly. You can't use these convoys to resupply unless it's a large convoy, which are very few. So, most of the Supplies on the map are inaccessible because your allies are hoarding them with no goal in mind, which forces you to stay close to the few bases that keep Supplies. Speaking of bases, most allied bases on the map are abandoned the majority of the time. Only a few of them keep Supplies on hand, and they're never near the front lines, so you're forced to stay in a small region of the map at all times or you'll run out of fuel. In combat, your squadron that drives around with you is more of a hindrance than helpful. They never watch where they're going, so they'll frequently crash into you, which can cause either boat to capsize. If your boat capsizes, your entire crew falls off the boat including the captain, and if it rolls back over it'll drive away with no crew. If your allied boat capsizes, it sinks immediately. While the allied boats in your squadron can be helpful with guns, they're next to useless with their torpedoes. If you let them aim and fire torpedoes themselves, it's almost always a miss. There's a way to tell your squadron when and where to fire their torpedoes, but they don't aim where you tell them to. Instead, they'll fire their torpedoes wherever their boat is aimed the moment you click the button, so those are always a miss unless you're very close to the enemy ships and driving straight towards them. The game also has terrible performance. It doesn't look very good to begin with, having low quality textures and abysmal antialiasing, yet fps will tank as soon as guns start firing. During the most intense engagements, my fps drops from a locked 120 to below 30, even though CPU, GPU, and RAM utilization are below 30%. It's so bad that the gameplay actually slows down. I'd really like to keep playing Boat Crew, but it's just so frustrating in its current state.
This game should be called patrol boat crew because that is what it feels like when your itty bitty speed boat is fighting destroyers and carriors and subchasers. Oh but what about your AI destroyers. sure you can get those if you hardcore grind the game but guess what you dont even get to play them or customize any of your squads ships they only give you options on what gun it has and nothing else. they should really focus on the boat part of the game because i feel like im the coast gaurd fighting the navy
Shares the rage of Bomber Crew when you're so swamped by enemies there's nothing you can do, except somehow worse.
There is roughly 10 hours of meaningful content in Boat Crew, which is about how long it takes to unlock the top-tier boat and best loadouts. After that point the gameplay loop becomes very repetitive. Every encounter is essentially the same and you end up soloing everything without much variation. Despite the game presenting a “dynamic campaign,” you have virtually no real influence over how the war develops, which makes the strategic layer feel shallow. Overall, the game severely lacks content and the repetitive missions cause it to become boring far too quickly.
Going on 4 years of Early Access......
I get being "Difficult" is the objective, but i'm tired of games wanting to be extremely tedious and time consuming with no rewards.
lacks content after a few hours, kind of just end up in a unenjoyable slow grind where you have alot of resources but nothing to really spend them on. i recommend getting it on sale
I saw my friend chew through 5 Fubukis and ask the waiter for more, im scared
You know those games thay start out lighthearted and fun before they suddenly turn into some kind of heavy horror. This is that. You start off doing Patrols, take on some enemy PT boats, maybe hit a small supply convoy. Then suddenly you are fighting the entire Japanese navy and its unlimited assets alone and the fun is gone. The odds are overwhelming, it feels like the game is designed to not be won. Not worth 25 bucks for a game you'll close in frustration and never open again.
This is a great game - pseudo-retro graphics disguising a depth to the gameplay that we could only have dreamed of back in the day. It's got all the classic elements of a squad-based game, looking after your crew while they gain experience, and it encourages daring whilst being quick and brutal to punish hubris.
