tl;dr
Do you remember those adventure games as a kid where you have 91 different items and you had to try every item on every spot to progress? Blind Boris is that + a time limit.
About the game
The premise of this game is what caught my attention. You can't see, so you have to rely on your other senses to tell you what's going on. It's a simple 2D/pseudo-3D game with pixel graphics, where you steer Boris and try to find a way to progress.
Techincal Implementation
It's terrible. Everything about the techincal details about this game is terrible.

Are the controls fluid? No.
Are the controls rebindable? No.
Can you play with a controller? No.
Can you play this game in 1080p? No.
Is the game in english? No, you have to try every option in russian first.

Is it fun?
I really tried to like this game. I like weird indie games, so I thought this was right up my alley. However, the gameplay quickly devolved into "Where the f*** should I go?". I went back and forth, trying to find items to use. Since the game does not have a sprint button, it takes ages to get from A to B. That in itself is something I can forgive, but what singlehandedly killed the game for me is that it has a time limit! Yes, it does. Sanity is a timed ressource, meaning that you go more and more insane as time progresses. When your sanity goes to 0, it's game over. How do you keep sane? You swallow pills that you find. Once you have no more pills, it's game over. This seems to be a rather strange design choice, since I don't know if the developers want me to go explore, or be as fast as I can. As I could judge so far, the game seems to be designed to replay the first bits over and over so you can do them perfectly - which is something I just don't enjoy.
Summary
I tried to like Blind Boris - I really tried. But it seems the game took too many design cues from the early ages of adventure games - and not exactly the right cues. If you can live with this, then by all means, go ahead and buy the game. But for the general public, I would not recommend it.
[olist]
[/olist]
This game has alot of potential, but i don't think this should be presented as a finished product. Positive: Theme is awesome and creepy. Loved the pixel graphics. Minimal but effective sound design. And the rest... Some typos in dialogue. Hard to tell what you are supposed to do at any given point. Level design is pretty awkward. Sometimes you cant use things in your inventory when you need to. Some guy on youtube already posted a video of a 'walk up a wall' bug. Im on the fence about getting a refund tho because theres a ton of promise here. Hope to see a patch from the devs!
A game really interesting and difficult to judge. But let’s go step by step. In Blind Boris the player is taking the control of an old man living in a hospice. The main character is not just old, but also blind and with a severe problem of memory. These conditions are directly integrated into the gameplay in unusual and innovative ways. The blindness will not directly affect the orientation, since the player can see what is around, probably because Boris (the main character) spent a lot of time in the hospice and knows the location. What is affected by the blindness is the position of the enemies, that are completely invisible. The memory is even a more complex feature. If you will not take medicines, the mental stability of the main character will decrease. Now will be a bit of speculation of what I understood, because, as I said, the gameplay is very cryptic. Each time that the player will die, he can “try to remember”: this means in terms of gameplay to continue from a checkpoint. However, the mental points will not be recovered and will continue to decrease, till a point where will be impossible to “remember” and Boris will forget everything. In terms of gameplay this means permanent death and having to restart all the game again. The exploration is one of the most interesting sides of the game. Every new door will hide a surprise and a mystery, any new button will drastically change the surrounding. The atmosphere benefits a lot from the environment, creating a dense sense of dread while advancing. The game in its current release (March 2018) is affected by many bugs and glitches. Moving is difficult and in a couple of times I found myself walking through the walls. Luckily, the developers are currently working in solving all the bugs. The game is very interesting and innovative and, regarding the bugs, it is an enjoyable and unique experience. Blind Boris is an experimental game full of surprises and brilliant gameplay decisions. From the concept, to the main character and especially to the setting, everything is interesting and creates a surreal and creepy atmosphere. The permanent death system is tough, but well implemented. It is not a perfect game, but if you are looking for an original horror experience with a twisted and surreal atmosphere, Blind Boris is a game to try.
Very interesting! I wouldn't really "recommend" this game to everyone as it doesn't have a typical appeal like story (I didn't understand a single thing about the plot), graphics (standard pixel art) or gameplay (incredibly buggy and unpolished). The only appeal that I can find is its weirdness. I personally quite like figuring stuff out for myself instead of being told and trust me, this game is happy to hide as many details as possible from the player. I spent 2/3 of my time restarting various times trying to understand the mechanics of this game and once it all "clicked" I breezed through the game from start to finish with no problems in one attempt, I even skipped a lot of items (optional ones like health and traps that help agaist hazards) since I already figured out how to reach the end. Basically this game is not complex, it has only a couple of simple rules. It's just that said rules are a little arbitrary and explained quite ambiguously but once you figure them out you're good to go. If I explained them you could essentially beat this game in 30 minutes or less so the meat of the game is mostly being in the dark trying to understand what's going on which is in the end what the devs were going for thematically, even though that's a result in equal measure not only of their creative vision but also pure amateurishness.
DO NOT BUY THIS GAME AT FULL PRICE! WAIT FOR SALES! I only give it a positive recommendation because region pricing and an 85% discount essentially gave it to me for roughly 0.40 USD, a laughable price and as much as the developers deserve. The Good:
.
The concept for this game is unique. You play as a blind man who must use his other senses to survive but as the player you are not blind - the juxtaposition of being horrified while the character is blissfully unaware makes the horror scenery more terrifying.
Good utilization of minimal graphics. The background art and its animation are pretty good for a pixel game and do their job well: a lack of detail makes for extra strangeness when you have objects floating around and being unable to tell the difference from demon and animal makes for a better scare.
Good sound design: minimal, lack of background music makes the scrapes and radio noise all the more potent. Especially given that sound is something used by the blind in place of sight.
The BAD: I'll try keep it minimal as I believe the facts speak for themselves. [olist]
This game has terrible art for the important things: being able to tell what is important and what is useable. Is that suspiciously chess-like rectangle the Tower? Is that a demon bird or a wooden owl the size of Boris that I can stuff in the inventory? Is that bear trap dangerous or just sitting there for no reason, doing nothing? All the important graphics are indistinguishable from other oversized eye candy, with objects towering over the character. You may think after the second time that BIG = IMPORTANT but no, you will waste precious time button mashing when you should be moving on.
Bugs. Bugs galore. I solved a puzzle by dropping my bird at a random spot. The 2nd time the wall button that is supposed to trigger didn't work and I was stuck, wasting time trying to get out of the developer's mistakes more than out of the nightmare house.
Terrible mechanics. You walk at snail speed, yet the game has a timer - Boris' brain runs out of juice unless you get pills (which you cannot make) and if you get stuck, bye bye Boris! I'm not entirely sure if you are meant to revive with your equipment or not, probably another bug.
Terrible translation. The game opens in Russian and if you don't understand it you may not even get to play the game at all. Thankfully for me it wasn't a difficulty but clearly the creators couldn't be bothered to do any translation aside from running the text through Google as the story and most of the in game text is plagued with immersion breaking mistakes and plain old WTF?! Here's what's actually going on:
the insane mayor and some cultists began to build strange towers to summon some otherworldly creatures/demons and gain eternal life. That's why poor Boris wakes up one day and has to talk to a 7 legged dragon.
[/olist] Given the above I would love to be able to find some saving grace but clearly the developer's are as blind as Boris. Their game is unplayable and impossible to understand but hey the graphics are cool! Too bad they don't amount to anything as you get tired seeing the same "creepy" thing for the 10th time as you try beat the timer and redo the same old thing over and over again as you try get out of Rose Hospice.
