Edit: Added some gameplay. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMYDIrcV0D0 As a big fan of 6DOF games i had to give this game a try. So i played the free demo 20 minutes then instantly bought the game ! Really good gameplay, tight controls and great sense of speed. The level design is quite good too with nice music and great atmosphere within the levels. BLAST-AXIS also deliver many satisfying weapons to use and also give you the choice to play in first person or third person (worth mentioning as it's not always the case in many other games). AFAIK this game was developed by a single person and it's quite stunning tbh. Easily recommended to all 6DOF games enthusiasts Only thing i disliked a little is how the map gets displayed, it can become quite confusing at times. Also wished there was more levels, as i really enjoyed playing it ! Maybe new content in the future ? In the meantime i will probably give it a second playthrough on the hardest difficulty. In this game you play as a cute little maintenance robot fighting blobby blue aliens who have invaded phobos for some irrelevant reason. It isn't the most polished 6DOF (descent-like) shooter, but it probably is the most unique and original, and it might just be the most fun. The game's main strengths are solid level design and a diverse and fun arsenal. There are six weapons in the game but thanks to ammo types and alt-fire modes these unfold into... a lot of weapons, I can't do the math. For example, the "tube" mortar launcher has three ammo types: flame rounds, grenades, and flak shells. Drilling down further, the flak shells can either be fired in "burst" mode, acting like a shrapnel shotgun, or in "fuze" mode, which fires a single projectile that explodes with AOE damage when it hits a wall or enemy. There's a tool for every job, and each weapon is a good mix of quirky and powerful which gives them a real sense of personality. They're your friends and you come to love them as you spend time hanging out. The cluster missiles in particular are an absolute joy. At first glance the enemies seem pretty basic, but as the game goes on new types get added, and none of them are stronger reskins of each other. The final roster is impressively diverse. It's a descent-like so of course there's a "lost soul" type enemy to ram into you, but there's also for example a weird corncob looking thing that seems to have gotten lost on the way to a danmaku shooter, who likes to blast dozens of plasma balls in random directions, and a mean little bastard reminiscent of the doom 2 archvile who completely changes the dynamic of every encounter he shows up in. Of course there's also the much beloved "guy who floats around and shoots at you." Oh also, enemies actually lead you! This took me a while to realize because it almost never happens in games like this. You have to juke and jive, you can't just stream the bullets. Pro tip. The developer wins major respect from me by implementing difficulty settings in the best way: instead of messing around with health and damage figures, and basically asking you to balance the game yourself by deciding how strong enemies should be, the game leaves mechanics completely identical between difficulty modes and simply re-populates the levels. On hard mode, encounters will include more advanced enemies and greater numbers in general. I'm always saying games should do it like this! The level design is a bit up and down but the highs are very high indeed, with intricate layouts that are satisfyingly complex both in physical structure and logical progression as you successively unlock the doors. You'll be very grateful for the map (projected into the game world in real time like some kind of trippy neon wallhack). The game is most successful when it puts you in a big (but not completely open) room with lots of different enemy types and just lets you go whole hog, and the level designers seem to realize this because they do it a lot. I think I had more basic brain chemical Fun in these moments than other 6DOF shooters have really ever managed to give me. Everything just comes together. What else should I mention? The controls are crisp and responsive. The player ship is much more durable than in (say) descent, so the difficulty comes from throwing you into complex and intimidating encounters, rather than by punishing you severely for mistakes. My biggest complaints are that the sounds are a bit quiet and gutless in general (weapons have nice vfx but could use more powerful sfx) and I wish it were longer. I blasted through the campaign in a single afternoon in about six hours of playtime according to Steam, and I could go for at least six more! I'm a powerful gamer tho so it might take longer than that for some. Two thumbs up, easy to recommend at full price.

This is an easy recommend for any 6dof fan. Controls are tight and responsive, weapons are meaty and satisfying, the atmosphere and music are great with a sound design that reminds me of Inferno 2, level design is awesome, and the ammo variety, difficulty modifiers, and score tracking provide motivation for multiple playthroughs. However, there does seem to be an issue with the game freezing up here and there. I had 5 freezes during the 4isn hours it took me to get through the campaign on the first difficulty. If they get that sorted out, I'd have 0 complaints with this great entry into the 6dof genre. Aside from those freezes, the game was running buttery smooth at 200+fps @ 1440p. TL;DR Definitely give this a spin if it looks interesting to you, but save your progress ;)
A solid Descent-alike with good controls, gorgeous lighting, and great guns. Seems very light on story tho. I'm usually a gamepad guy but this one plays much better with M+KB.
I will review this game as more of an impression than as a full-on review, given I feel I have not played enough to say with absolute certainty how much I like or dislike it. I will say that the game's advertising does not accurately give a depiction of why I felt the need to buy and play this game. Based on playing the demo, I had surmised this was more of a 6DOF/Survival Horror/Technical Explore-Em-Up. When I looked at the trailer, I saw more of a fast-paced action-oriented 6DOF blast-em-up. Now, I see merit in playing the game the way the trailer suggests, and maybe if I were to play on the Major Hazard difficulty it would resemble that sort of play more. I find that Moderate Hazard strikes a nice balance between these two ideas of what the game should be. Either way, I must say the game is invigorating once you get into the thick of it. I also find it very interesting that when you die, you have to recollect your weapons and power-ups, so it very much rewards playing each level without losing. I don't know if I would say the game is worthy of it's $20 price tag. It goes on sale on occasion so I would consider buying it then, though I feel bad that this dev has not seen much success with the game despite the quality of his or her works. I would recommend the game if you have played the demo. It is nearly identical to the game you will end up playing when you have finally bought it. Overall, I'd say it was worth waiting however long I had it on my wishlist so I could snag it up this Halloween.
Review copy provided by developer via Curator Connect It’s a shame there aren’t more attempts at the six-degrees-of-freedom genre that Descent pioneered, though if they turn out like this, maybe it’s for the best. Technicolor creepies have invaded the many mines, tunnels, and metroplexes of Phobos, and you’ve got a hot little junker that’s ready to blast them. Armed with a chainsaw, beam cannon, and all sorts of ordnance you can find, you’ll descend into muddy, confusing levels, battle unremarkable foes with unsatisfying weapons, and struggle with a needlessly obtuse UI. I don’t want to dismiss this one entirely out of hand but the entire game experience just feels terrible, from the sluggish controls to the incomprehensible map overlay. Any lesson in game design you could take from Descent was missed here, so I heartily encourage you to seek out the original over this sorry attempt. Oh, and it crashes a bunch. The control options menu reads like a technical manual for your wrecking drone, and it took me a moment to digest all of it. The weighty feel of your inputs and the flexibility of your control options result in an extremely tactile gameplay experience. The trailer does not emphasize enough the wonderfully creepy atmosphere of exploring the gameworld.

Good but clunky and sometimes frustrating. Has problems with visual clarity, level design can sometimes be confusing, map can sometimes be useless, and most importantly, you don't have as much control over your robot as you probably should given many of the combat encounters. All these issues combined makes for a game which while good, is pretty flawed. Also, the main way to gain control is to use the forward thrusters. However, there is a heat system that forces you to control it. The issue is that I don't think the heat system adds much to the game other than forcing the player to engage with its clunkiness rather than the game at its best. That said I still recommend it. It's quite fun and has a good visual style, but its clunky movement and lack of visual clarity are worth keeping in mind before playing. I should clarify that the movement would be good if the enemies and levels were better built for it.
