Black Mesa is probably the best way to play Half-Life if you don't particularly care about playing Half-Life the way it originally existed. The original is still great, obviously, but Black Mesa gives everything more life. Black Mesa itself feels much larger, the environments have a lot more detail, and the whole facility feels like somewhere that was actually built for something before Gordon arrived and ruined everyone's afternoon. The combat is also much better to me. The weapons feel heavier, the soldiers are more aggressive, and the expanded Xen sections make the ending feel considerably more complete. Xen is the biggest change, and probably the most successful one. It takes the original's strange alien environments and actually builds a proper set of levels around them instead of making you jump across floating rocks. There are some expanded sections that go on longer than necessary, and I still think the original has a certain simplicity that Black Mesa can't really reproduce. But as a complete package, this is probably the best way to experience Half-Life. It keeps the parts that made the original important, while making the whole thing feel like a proper modern game. If you've never played Half-Life before, I'd start here. If you have, it's still worth playing just to see what a remake can actually do without losing the game underneath it.
