Snake Logan is a top-secret operative for the CIA ordered to complete missions that others would regard as suicidal. One day, Snake is called into headquarters and briefed on a situation that has arisen in Metro City.
It seems that thousands of monster-like creatures are on a rampage of destruction through the city. Many thousands have already died, and Metro has declared martial law just before losing all communications. Right before the city was overrun, authorities received a message from a man calling himself Dr. Mangle. He stated that Metro is to be an example of what will happen to the rest of the world unless all factions of government comply with his wishes.
Snake is ordered to take a plane, fly recon over the city and then return. While circling over the area, he is suddenly attacked by some kind of laser weapon, and the plane loses engine power! He's forced to make an emergency landing and explore the ravaged city on foot. It's now up to Snake - and you! - to save any survivors, find the source of this destruction, and stop Dr. Mangle.

(Follow my curator for more reviews like this)
BioMenace Remastered? More like BioMenace 2
Calling this a remaster is an understatement. Yes, it's a (mostly) faithful remake of the original game, featuring all original levels and the ability to switch to original graphics at any time. But it also includes some significant gameplay changes and, most importantly, a whole new chapter that uses level design elements that would not have been possible in the original engine. That chapter makes this feel more like a sequel than anything. First, the original content. BioMenace comes with three episodes, each increasing in difficulty. I only had the first episode as a kid, as it was shareware and free to distribute. It was one of my favorite games back in the day, and its various monsters even inspired my own designs when I wrote my own comics at 5 years old or so. I remember hitting my PC's power button when I encountered Skull Man because of how creepy he was. Good times. When I hunted down the other two episodes on abandonware sites in my 20s and played through the full game, the later episodes turned out to have some quite frustrating design decisions. The difficulty ramped up quite a bit in episodes 2 and 3, often in a frustrating way. This remaster fixed all of that with a few gameplay adjustments, but do note that this means it's not a 100% faithful remaster of the original. In the original game, whenever you picked up special ammo, it would override your current ammo. In this remaster, special ammo goes into your arsenal and can be switched between with the press of a key. You can also switch between different grenade types, where in the original you had to use up all of your currently selected grenades before it would switch to the next tier. If you had 3 fire grenades, which are better than regular ones, and 5 regular, you'd have to use up the 3 fire grenades before you could use the regular ones. Now that you can freely switch between grenade and ammo types, it allows for much smarter resource management. It also makes the game much easier, especially since the original levels were designed around the mechanic where picking up new ammo would override your current one. With the new system, you'll pretty much never run out of special ammo in the original three episodes, as there's quite a lot of it to collect. The remaster also got rid of the lives system. In the original, you had X amount of lives, and if you died X times you'd get a game over. You could find extra lives in some locked stashes, but those were rare and valuable. This system has been removed. You can still find the extra lives, but now they're merely high-scoring score items. You can die as often as you want without fearing a game over. Deaths simply reduce your score at the end of a level. So, several changes have been made to the core gameplay which purists will disagree with. But ultimately, what this "remaster" is really about is the fourth episode, and that one was designed with the new gameplay adjustments in mind. Ammo is far scarcer, and there are so many new level design tricks that it doesn't feel like an additional episode for the original game but a full-on sequel. All three original episodes have 12 levels each. Episode 4 has 15 levels. The levels in episode 4 are far longer than any of the original game's, often being twice as long and far more complex. There are new ways of item placement: while in the original, score items were always placed behind locked stash doors, they can now float in the air too like in other platformer games like Commander Keen. Meanwhile items that were previously only found floating in the air, like medkits, can now also be found behind doors. It's a nice mixup that makes item placement far less predictable. Episode 4 comes with several new mechanics that haven't been seen before, and were likely not even possible in the original engine. Elevators can now change direction instead of only going up and down. This sees particular use in a level where you have to navigate several moving platforms and deactivate electric beams to safely move along their paths. And there are many other unique mechanics and interesting levels that I don't want to spoil. With the amount of new gameplay elements in Episode 4, it really doesn't do this game justice to merely call it BioMenace Remastered. This is BioMenace 2, full stop. And Episode 4 is better than any of the original episodes. If you liked the original, you owe it to yourself to play this. The new content is absolute top tier, it does things with BioMenace you never would have thought possible, and on top of it all it even comes with a level editor and an in-game mod browser! What a great nostalgia trip and what an absolute enhancement of a classic game. I hope more Apogee classics get this remaster treatment, with an updated engine and new episode that surpasses the original!
A fantastic remaster of the classic DOS platformer. Everything that made the original so great is here, and now it comes with well thought-out polish and quality of life improvements that make the game so much more enjoyable for old and new players alike. Pros +Widscreen support +Alternate sound effects +Optional new graphics +Brand new episode with new levels and music +Level editor +Quicksave support Cons None! Rigel Gameworks has knocked it out of the park with this one, so don't wait for your registered copy to come in the mail like a lameo, play it now!
A faithful remaster of one of my fav childhood games crafted with care and love that it deserves. You get all episodes + a new one which is longer than the previous three combined. There are lots of quality improvements in the gameplay and graphics department. But what's also cool is that you can turn all of that off and return to the OG graphics and style. Everything is done tastefully and playing through this was a blast. If Apogee wants to do Biomenace 2, these devs should handle it. 11/10, my snake is pleased.
*Chef's kiss* Bio Menace was in my podium for 90s platformers, everything about it, the music, the colours, the gibs, the arsenal (love the red grenades). Both the journey of playing it, and the destination were fun as some of those levels were really tough! I'm not sure how many times I played the shareware episode as a child, bit its a lot, even outstripping many other Apogee titles from the time. So when I heard there was a remaster coming, and from the same team who did the Rigel Engine for Duke Nukem 2 I was intrigued! There is a pretty standard formula for remasters and this nails those points: 1) Remastered graphics, but the option to play the old visuals 2) A new episode expanding on the things that made the original great and a fresh look at things 3) New enemies to battle 4) Features in modern titles (for me Steam achievements/leaderboards are a big plus) Apart from that, there are a mix of great surprises and easter eggs along the way. Things start fairly straightforward. Some of the levels you visit a similar theme, but new level design eg a construction site. I did have quite a few surprises of things I just wasn't expecting. These things brought me pure joy, even though a few bits I learnt from watching Civvie 11's video. There are a few optional challenges such as a basic speedrun achievement if you can beat certain times, challenges to tackle bosses in certain ways. Final boss was a great ending, that took me a few attempts as I played on hard. I'm going to be going back to Episode 4 to find those missing secrets and all those secret levels I found. Let's hope I don't get knocked off course by something unexpected, eg could you imagine if Blizzard released a new class for the first time in 25 years?
An excellent remaster of an Apogee classic!
I count myself as something of an MS-DOS Platformer Sicko™ but I never really beat many of them between their oft-intense difficulty and not being able to afford the registered versions (or for that matter, to convince my family to mail a cheque to the other side of the planet to register!) As a result, I never managed to play Bio Menace too deeply, despite loving its weird cutesy-horror EGA pixel art aesthetic, on account of its violent hatred of anyone seeing more than two levels in. This remaster, by the developer of the excellent RigelEngine source port for Duke Nukem 2, makes some clever choices to make things more bearable while not removing the teeth completely. You now have infinite lives, but you get a big score bonus for completing a level with no deaths to your name. Combine this with big score bonuses for finding 1ups, a "kill streak" system to encourage wasting multiple enemies quickly, and some time and score leaderboards, and you have a fun way to recontextualize the existing content - no longer insurmountable, but a fun and repeatable challenge for hi-score chasers and speedrunners. The original Bio-Menace was primarily developed by one guy, and frankly, it shows in the level design of the original three episodes, which by and large are pretty same-y and usually an S-shape of some kind taking up most of the level editor grid with some holes cut in it. However, this release comes with a new episode developed by the new, 2026 development team. So, how is it? Good, I'm pleased to say, but still far from flawless. The level design is a bit more complex (sometimes to a fault), and the new gimmicks are often fun (the surprise finale is great!) but some of the levels are utter stinkers and some of the new pixel art can veer on the amateurish compared to the original - the first level in the city is great, but the second has some contrast issues where it can be a bit tricky to tell the difference between solid and non-solid tiles, and the third is mostly just one tile copy-pasted forever. All in all, the new episode is great fun, but not without qualifications - the new music is excellent, the secrets and Easter Eggs are a blast to find, but the tilesets and level design quality is more or less a sine-wave. Best Bit: The mountain level in Episode 4 was lovely, a real rabbit hole of secrets and weirdness. Worst Bit: The wire puzzle level. Uggh. Worth The Price: If you're not an MS-DOS Platformer Sicko™ it can't hurt to wait for a sale, but there's a free demo for you to decide for yourself.
Great game , great remaster , well worth the cash……love old ms dos games , that was when the era of imagination existed in developers…
Dev is an absolute legend and added a fix to let us CRT bros enjoy this retro gem in native, pixel perfect resolution without any scaling. Fantastic remaster that let's you mix and match different parts of the remaster, very well executed!
Me encantó.
Bio Menace
