About
A brutal FPS. One girl. One gun. One recording.
They broke into her life.
They filmed her. They destroyed her.
Now she's back - and she's filming them.
Better Than Dead is a brutal first-person shooter set in the depths of photorealistic Hong Kong.
You play as a survivor who’s done running. She’s got a pistol, a bodycam, and a kill list.
Every level is a raid. And every raid has a rhythm.
You'll die. You'll learn. You'll come back faster - until every run feels like the revenge scene it was meant to be.
Bodycam revenge shooter – Film every step. Every shot. Every death. No mercy.
Learn, adapt, dominate - Each room has a rhythm. Die, read the layout, and come back harder. Every run is faster than the last.
Photorealistic Hong Kong – Fight your way through iconic action-movie settings: neon-lit restaurants, seedy nightclubs, back alleys, rooftop dens.
Raw, aggressive gunplay - Slide into bullet time. Move fast. Hit harder.
Cinematic action style – Inspired by classic Hong Kong action films from the ’80s and ’90s.

Feels Like a Discount Bodycam Clone This is a mediocre “Bodycam copycat”, but as a single‑player, story‑driven-ish version. The idea behind the story is actually decent, but the execution falls apart almost everywhere. ⛔ Major Issues - Characters look terrible, and the whole game feels like an asset flip. - Hitbox problems everywhere. Enemies shoot before you even enter a room. - NPC bullets ignore objects, while yours get blocked by fences with giant holes. - Animations are generic, stiff, and lifeless. - The protagonist, despite surviving multiple levels of gunfights, never shows any learning curve in weapon handling. - Civilian NPCs are brain-dead, standing still during gunfights like mannequins. - Zero NPC variety. Everything is copy‑pasted. - Blur effect bugs out, revealing the low-quality NPC faces. - Enemies barely move, most just stand in one spot waiting to die. - Textures/graphics are awful, hidden behind heavy filters instead of actual detail. - Menu/UI looks like default engine templates. No style, no identity. - Blood effects look like broken glass-water. - Running/sliding causes weird slowdown animations that interrupt gameplay. I know this was intended to be, but maybe add another button for it, if you want to activate it. - No replayability at all. Enemies spawn in the exact same spots every time. - Many enemies react too late, and sometimes they just pull out their gun in front of you. Some enemies even may just stand still after getting up from being shot. - Other times, enemies magically know you’re there before you arrive and start blasting through doors/walls. - Only one boring gun, unlimited ammo, no progression. - Texture/asset issues everywhere. Unfinished buildings (some assets just either flying in the air, some are missing a wall where there should be one). Ie. Level 2 had some doors with solid walls behind them. You may also clip into small objects or get stuck. - Camera and movement feels clunky. - Ending explains nothing. - Rescue missions reuse the same NPC model over and over. 🎭 Story & Atmosphere - I like the concept: escaping human trafficking and seeking revenge. - But the game never delivers that emotionally(?), if thats the word I'm looking for. - It’s more like: “I randomly found a gun with infinite ammo, time to go killing.” It also never tells you, how she even knows where they are. 🔫 Gunplay & Maps - Gunplay has potential but needs serious fixing. - Some industrial maps look neat, but all maps are small. And the whole gameplay is > you walk in > shoot everyone > escape. Verdict ★☆☆☆☆ Not Recommended - 100% not recommended in its current state. - Maybe worth it on a very deep sale (like 2$). - Right now, the whole game can be finished in under 2 hours, and it feels extremely bland. - I do not understand how this game has "Mostly Positive" reviews at this state.
Experienced on the Meta Quest 3
You can view my VR mod gameplay & commentary here: https://youtu.be/XvyB_uzTO7E Yes, you can play Better than Dead in VR using the UEVR mod by Praydog (nightly version with Joey Hodge's fork UEVRbackend.dll). I also used Keyser Sose's community profile from the Flat2VR community discord. You do need a beefy rig though. However, if you can, you will experience this game in the best way possible. This game is brilliant in VR. Body cam / fish bowl look? Gone in VR. Wobbly aim? Gone in VR. You're aiming with your motion controllers in full 6DOF. You're aiming just like you would in real life. Get a gun stock and it'll feel like the real thing. You will be Keanu Reeves in John Wick, in fact, you'll be better. You'll be Denzel Washington in Equalizer. If you want that true power / revenge fantasy, that's only possible in VR. You will have 100% true immersion with these ultra-realistic visuals in VR. This is the future of gaming now. Thanks to the VR modders for making this possible. I just wish developers had the same cojones. VR Rating 8/10. Performance and some visual glitches keep this from being perfect in VR, but it is made for VR. Best way to experience the game.
I bought this game! I disagree with a ton of negative reviews for the game, ninety minutes in and I LOVE the gunplay, i feel like its perfectly "clunky" since youre basically an escaped trafficking victim with presumably no firearms experience seeking revenge. I feel as if the game demands a mix of hip firing and ironsights. i think im about halfway through the game, and even "they found you, run" was very fun for me. i actually struggled more in the more open areas rather than the tight ones. I complete most levels on my first try, and i can't wait for more difficulty to be added because im LOVING this game. sidenote: in terms of guns, i dont think an inventory system would fit this game, but being able to pick up different guns off enemies would be nice. if they do add difficulty settings/gamemodes, id like to see a "no infinite ammo" feature. managing shots/bullets could be a fun balance change for this game. giving some enemies vests (so that they can be shot more in the chest, which is where one would typically aim) could be a fun difficulty increase as well, making you aim for the arms, legs, or head. an injury system in this game would be amazing if thats added. i put off buying it during steam summer sale and purchased it on a whim just two hours ago. worth every penny. pick it up asap. cant wait to follow up on this review.
Developers, please make the tutorial proper – you’ve come up with some brilliant mechanics, but they’re hard to get to grips with!
This may be one of my favorite games I’ve played this year. It's rough around the edges but I think a lot of that actually works in the game’s favor. The gunplay is clunky, but that's because it makes sense given the character you play as. They did a damn good job with the sound design. The soundtrack is pretty decent too, but some tracks felt out of place. The atmosphere is my favorite part. It’s tense and uneasy, and I love how the game presents its story. I also love how it genuinely made me feel uncomfortable at times. Despite being only around 2 hours long, Better Than Dead is an easy recommendation from me.
Hey kiddo, Handsome Jack here... and I just played Better Than Dead, and apparently someone looked at bodycam footage, Hong Kong action movies, and the general concept of “what if shooting people felt REALLY uncomfortable?” and decided to turn it into a video game. Honestly? Excellent. You play as a woman with a pistol, a bodycam, and a kill list, which is basically the worst possible combination for the people standing between her and the next objective. You're thrown into these photorealistic environments, sliding around corners, shooting people at point-blank range, diving into bullet time, and generally making everyone involved reconsider their career choices. And the bodycam perspective? Oh, kiddo. THE BODYCAM. You're not looking at some polished action hero from three meters behind them. You're looking through the actual camera strapped to them while everything shakes, jerks, and explodes directly in your face. It's disgusting. It's claustrophobic. It's beautiful. It's like watching a security camera develop a personal vendetta. And then there's the gunplay. You have one gun, limited resources, and absolutely no room for stupidity. You can't just stand in the middle of a room absorbing bullets like some corporate-sponsored meat shield. You move. You slide. You shoot. You use bullet time. You learn the layout. You die. You come back. You do it faster. That's not a game loop. That's employee training. The Hong Kong setting is fantastic too. Neon-lit restaurants, alleys, nightclubs, rooftops, cramped interiors... it looks like someone shoved an old-school Hong Kong action movie into Unreal Engine and then told everyone involved to stop caring about OSHA regulations. And because it's Early Access, there are definitely rough edges. The aiming can feel awkward, the difficulty can be brutal, and sometimes the bodycam realism works against you instead of making things easier. The developer is actively tuning things like mouse consistency, enemy variety, movement, and blood effects, so there's clearly still work happening. But here's the thing. I don't care. Because when you finally understand a room, slide around a corner, hit bullet time, drop one guy, spin around, shoot another, and keep moving without stopping? Oh. OH, KIDDO. That's the good stuff. Suddenly you're not playing a shooter. You're directing your own extremely violent Hong Kong action movie. And you're the star. And the cameraman. And unfortunately, also the person getting shot repeatedly while learning the level. 8/10. Brutal, stylish, weirdly addictive, and absolutely dripping with potential. It's not finished yet, and you can definitely feel that in places, but the core idea is fantastic. I'd give it a 9, but I'm docking a point because apparently the protagonist has to physically aim the gun herself. Why am I doing manual labor? I'm the CEO. Give me a targeting system. Give me a satellite. Give me a small intern whose only job is to point the gun. Something. Until then, I'll just keep sliding around Hong Kong shooting people in the face. That's called productivity.
atmosphere is there imo, but 2 key settings are still missing: separate ADS/hip-fire sensitivity and gunshots/ambient stingers. I'll probably check the game out later, but for now, its unplayable
NIce idea for an fps but constantly fighting the main character for control of the gun is annoying so I'm gonna refund this for now and see if it gets better in the future.
I am Chow Yun-Fat, Tokarev in hand and toothpick in mouth. May John Woo guide my sights. Amen.
Initally got the game and made it 20 minutes before regretting it. Then the 2.0 update came out and ended up playing through the whole game. It's unique - espeically in a time where games often do too much. Short, simple, fun. Looking forward to see what gets added. Big props on the team for trying something new. Made me feel like i was in 2000s action movie.
