I did a 3 Minute Review Video Here: https://youtu.be/DGE8h0qncGw TLDR: - It has very complex and deep deck builder mechanics with a multitude of status effects. - However, the game's otherwise interesting complexity is bogged down by its simple mistakes like missing tool tips and descriptions, and sometimes lack of translation to English at parts - The game's difficulty balance is also out of whack! With some early game bosses a real difficulty spike, while later game bosses can be really weak - The immersive story, setting, and art is some of the best I've seen, and the way you uncover the story via exploration is also a big plus. Unfortunately all that is marred by clunky gameplay and many simple but annoying flaws. Unfortunately, I would not recommend it, at least until the devs fix the current issues that plague the game.
After spending dozens of hours playing slay the spire, monster train, across the obelisk, vault of the void etc, I have enjoyed seeing how was of my most played genres has continued to evolve. There are many deckbuilder roguelike games out there and the ones mentioned above all put a spin on the traditional formula. There are also a lot of low effort slay the spire clones with a different coat of paint and I can tell you right off of the bat that this is not one of them. The immediate draw for me and probably you as well was the artwork and animations that are truly unparalleled in this genre. Nothing else really comes close in terms of the presentation and the animation and sound design combining to make a turn based card game feel like each move really has weight and impact. Instead of just the excitement of having a big damage number pop up, you get rewarded with visceral attack animations as well. Of course none of this would really matter if the actual gameplay was not engaging or unique. Thankfully that is absolutely not the case here. One thing I have to stress however, is that this game is not a deckbuilder or at least not in the sense that picking what cards to add or remove is equally or even more important than the order you play them in as is the case with many of it's peers. You can add and remove cards from your deck but rather than focusing a build around what cards you have, BTLH emphasizes choosing weapons and artifacts which give passive bonuses to the cards that are already in your deck and many of which drastically change the way you play. The game features a combo system where the basic actions you will start each run with, a weapon card that changes depending on what weapon you have equipped, speed strength and pierce cards. Alone, a single strength card will ad a flat amount of damage, a single defense card adding a flat amount of damage reduction and so on, but in combination two pierce cards and a strength card will also add the combo effect of adding bleed stacks in addition to raising the level of that strength card so the next time it is played it will be more powerful. You will start every run with a deck composed of these basic actions and will also end most runs with a similar deck composition. That might sound like it would lead to a lot of repetitive gameplay, but when making smart decisions about weapons and artifacts you take or leave behind you will significantly alter the interactions those basic cards have with one another and even open up new combinations of cards like strength and speed which do not have any combination benefits if used in a turn normally. The biggest game changers are when you equip a legendary weapon which has unlockable nodes like a talent tree that can completely change your approach to combat. For example a weapon that makes weapon cards combine with strength to give you a defense bonus may encourage you to drop defense cards completely in favor of more strength and weapon cards for easier access to those combos that culminate in powerful critical hits with unique gameplay effects and awesome animations as a bonus. If you have played the other big names from the genre and you have not been a fan of roguelike deckbuilders before, this game will probably not change your mind, but if you are, I cannot recommend it enogugh. The game is currently in early access and there are some bugs and unfinished tooltips but In it's current state I have highly enjoyed my time and I am really looking forward to seeing it grow on it's way to it's full release. Also cannot stress enough how responsive and engaged the developers are in the discord. Both to feedback and addressing bug reports. If you have been burned by early access before by a dev with a promising idea that goes AWOL with maybe a sporadic update every few months, it is really encouraging to see how passionate this team is and how open they are in acknowledging feedback and their transparency so far. It is a roguelike so there is not the kind of meta progression that requires grinding enough hours to be able to succeed. This is much more a git gud kind of progression although you will unlock more items and weapons that can appear in your runs, codex entries that expand on the compelling narrative and a few other surprises I won't spoil. The combo system did not click for me for several runs and although I think the tutorial could be improved (which the devs have already acknowledged) once it clicked I could not put it down for an entire weekend. If you are curious I recommend stopping by the discord where there are currently both french and english channels and a very helpful and friendly community.
Bon jeu a tous !
amazing art, gameplay depth, maybe a bit rough on the sides, needs polish but it's an EA so it's expected and it's not a dealbreaker nor the game is broken criminally underrated, if this were from another studio or had a marketing team behind should have already thousands of sales. give it a try
Game ceased updates in 2022 and is horribly unfinished, what's there is *functional* but so much is missing. do not purchase if you want a balanced, polished, finished game.
