I played Battle Realms back when it was released - so it was very nostalgic and I'm maybe biased. Battle Realms' game mechanics are somewhat special, which makes it very refreshing; it's something other than the classic RTS formula. A nice and unique variety for RTS fans. The game mechanics themselves work, but get rather stressful. You have to micro a lot if you want to play on high difficulty. It's rather hard to master, which can be good or bad - depending on what you like. Some campaign maps feel rather unfair, and sometimes Battle Realms' micro-intense game mechanics get way too stressful. I had some ragequits and even left Battle Realms for many months before finishing its campaign finally, but it was doable after all and I didn't regret any minute or $ I've invested into the game. Its biggest strength in my opinion is its setting, characters and atmosphere. While the story stays somewhat mysterious with many unexplained details, the Serpent Clan campaign is just godlike. Serpent-Kenji is just so badass, I loved every one of his lines. Just for his badass cutscenes I will play the whole campaign over and over. And the soundtrack fits perfectly! When the dramatic parts of serpent_normal or serpent_combat music triggers in the right moments, the game becomes an absolute masterpiece of epicness - and somehow it seemed that it ALWAYS triggered in the exact right moment. Oh, but, btw, I play it in German. And the German voice over is one of the best voice overs I've ever heard in any PC games I played. For me, this German voice over does a big part of the atmosphere and epicness of it - I guess the English version is fine too? Maybe not? Keep that in mind, maybe Kenji isn't THAT cool as I wrote here if you play the English version ;)
OG fan from 2001. This game takes that old legacy game and makes it all the more better. Very cool. Very Excellent. Would absolutely be great if there was a remake. But this enhanced 'Remastering' for modern systems is fantastic. Needless to say, Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting! KUNG POW!
As much as I love the game, the AI changes in the campaign compared to the original are just too much for casual players like me. RTS campaigns are usually designed to ease players into the game and teach them the mechanics. But here, it feels like the devs expect every player to already have a solid understanding of how the game works. This could have been offset by including a difficulty setting, but unfortunately, the game doesn't have one. I'll still play the game, but I'll probably skip the campaign for what it's worth.
Played a pirated copy of this back in school (2010-2012 i think) and could never finish it xD. I bought it now just to finally beat the game and for the pure nostalgia. It's an absolute classic. >>>>>>>>>>Highly recommended<<<<<<<<<<
Hi. Just to set the record straight, I played this game when I was 10 till 17. Recently stumbled into it againt after more than 15 years. Aight let's get to the brass tracks. This game exudes a hefty amount of personality in each unit, like, you could literally hear what each unit is saying whilst fighting. It makes me feels like I a watching a fantasy wuxia movie. The expressive mobility of each hero and soldier makes one want to think hard while playing. Easily one game could get to at least over one hour playtime. Beware, majority of the peeps in the multiplayer always wanna aggro against five Nightvol-level AIs, yes, I am spoiling then I said that, this is because the Nightvol is the final enemy is the final enemy in Kenji's Journey. Nightvol's AI-readability easily reach all stats at full 100, wow. But even when 3 human vs 5 Nightvol AIs, with good comrades who wont ragequit after two or three towers of them fallen, lol, with good terrain-terror-tries, five Nightvol-level AI's can be beaten, but it requires tremendous cooperation between amongst your team. Final Fantasy 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9 and Battle Realms are the main reasons why I fell in love in with English language. Hearing the voice acting of Battle Realms, and reading the NPC dialogues of FF games I mentioned above, made me wanna learn English, finally. Aesthetically speaking, I dare to say that even by today's standard, Battle Realms remains a golden expression of what and how story-driven RTS can show. Though, I am sure I am not the only one player who wants a graphcis remaster, the game can still be enjoyed visually. Okay fine I derailed long enuff. To the cakes! Unlike most RTS then and now, Battle Realms military revolves around combat and economy driven priority and protocols. You don't just spawn a Pikeman from the barracks like in Cossack, instead, your peasants can be commanded by you to gather water, gather rice, gather horses (for horseriding or for pack of wolves), build buildings, repair buildings, extinguish fires and most important of all - train them into strong warriors. Yes, you are right, we are not using any wood, metals, meats or fruits here, instead, rice and water are the price for strong soldier buffers. Meaning, a peasant can be trained into a selected warrior type by providing certain amount of rice and water. Each warrior can also have and use their own speciall ability earned from special buildings of their clans. Battle Realms employ different kind of combat mechanics. Unlike the rock paper scissor like those in Pokemon or even Final Fantasy or Ragnarok Online or even Wakfu, heroes and soldiers (and peasants ofcourse) have their own -combat-genetic make up of combat damage orientations. Which are, cutting, piercing, blunt, explosive and magic. One unit can deal cutting, resist magic and weak against explosive (for example, not that this is fact, I am just tryinta illustrate my exp here). Not all heroes and soldiers have none as their weakness, and same amount of strength of damage orientation that can be dished out, so plan the formation of your soldiers type well. I do not want to touch the campaign, you experience them on your own, ya. I am Krizzirk, and i approve this game, and recommend you all to try and play them, it'll make your minds go nuts. And please, for those playing in multiplayer matches, don't, just don't, ragequit earlywhen your one to two tower collapses on the front by INVADING ARMIES OF 5 NIGHTVOLS-LEVEL AIs. I'll see you in-game, I'll see you around, and I'll you see you all on the other side. "To live is to serve, to serve is to live" "There is no Serpent, there is only the Dragon" "You are the Serpent, become The Dragon"
the last time i played this was back on 2009 and i feel like AI makes it more challenging
Nostalgic! Mind blowing! Addictive!
Many Korean fans have loved Battle Realms for years, and an official Korean translation would help both longtime players and new players enjoy the game even more.
One of my favorite game as a child. Glad it still gets love after so many years.
10/10 Best RTS, this is where I met my gf lmao we both love this game and our first talk was about this game and how good it is.
