I have been a wargamer since the late 60's--yeah, old guy here... I have learned over the years that simplicity and ease of play typically triumph over details, details, and more details. Now, don't get me wrong--deep dive simulations can be very enjoyable. It is easy, however, to lose yourself in the thicket while the world passes you by. This game is easy to pick up and easy to play. There are no supply rules to worry about. There are no cohesion points to finagle. In short, this is wargaming at its most primitive. And...for some odd reason, it works! Perhaps it's the ferocius AI or maybe it's the simplicity. Regardless, as the German player you feel the desperation as the Soviet hordes slowly grind you into dust. They maneuver smartly, they attack smartly...as I said, ferocious AI. Now, this game does have its problems. The manual is basically non-existent. You have to figure a lot of things out on your own. Stick with it though, and you'll soon be telling your wife "just one more turn" as you watch your units slowly get strangled by the Russian juggernaut. Highly recommended--fun game that captures the spirit of the desperate Korsun defense quite well.
January 1944. The German Army had their last toehold on the Dneiper River. but it seems, as your the Germans against the Soviet assault / AI want you out or dead, and they have the numbers to do it, so it's your job basically to survive and pull back / out,... so is it worth it? one battle? no scenario's etc well it's a large map, and plenty more units to control than Kursk, the previous game in the series and better imo than the first Operation Typhoon, so it's a step up, adding more options more play ability, as no matter how you play it, the AI re acts somewhat differently, giving you a feeling of like playing with someone else, and at times rather uncanny, without giving you the feeling it's cheating etc. already talk of pbem being added after a buyer on the steam forums asked for it, not something for me, as i like single player, so would have liked the AI for both sides, where as atm you have only the Germans being playable against the AI, or head to head mode for 2 player, but a developer who is open to add items and supports with passion gets a tick in my book. arty and air is abstracted in this one, mind you with the weather as bad as it was in the time, air wouldn't be used much tbh on most days, but like supply adds depth that at this level and price you can't really expect, not saying it's beer and pretzel type or a cheap low end game either, but it's a board game conversion to pc, so only what's in the board game, is here,... so overall it comes down to, do you like the board game version? did you play and enjoy it, and also do you like the battle and area and time scale etc, counters this time are Nato ones but Tanks are clealy marked, which works for me, as i'm useless with pure Nato ones anyway, so found it as easy to understand as Kursk with no Nato ones used. imo there isn't as many way game developers around any more, as tbh any other format sells better, so anyone left in the market has a tough job of breaking even, so for the price and time it will take you to beat and try different times to do different approaches and tactics etc i'd recommend it to anyone who likes counter moving turn based war games based on or not of board games. i'm still into testing games more than playing them, but with most tests taking over 200+ hours still for beta and 500+ hours for alpha ones, i know what i like and what i don't, and don't hold back my words / comments for turkeys either. for how easy it is to pick up and play, i'd say it's open for anyone who like counter moving games, but grogheads need to look elsewhere as it's really not aimed at you do please don't buy and moan you beat it in 30 mins, as for the price, you can't really hope to WITE and a 500 page manual at this price either. so hope it's enough for most to have an idea on what's here and what's not, iv'e done some screen shot and the developers done some video, so no need to buy and refund, it's easy to see what is and what isn't in game and how it plays. as always enjoy and thanks for reading, comments are open, and i will reply to positive and or negative and asap, so if i don't do it straight away, i'm on holiday enjoying myself lol :)
Bought this game in the hope of a light version of Panzer Corps/Panzer General/Order of battle style game. I knew the rules was light. But I had technical issues: 1) Three crashes to desktop in less than one hour. 2) Unit markers out of place with attack markers on lone hexes at one place. Nothing I could change. 3) Very slow UI when selecting units 4) Not easy to deselect unit. You have to click on another unit for doing so 5) No loss report after battle. Must I count the strength points manually for all units involved to keep track of the losses ? 6) No loss summary screen so no reason to replay the scenario to gain a better outcome 7) No victory hexes at all which means your actual placement at the map is irrelevant. Combine that with the lack of supply and you don´t have any reason to protect any area on the map at all. Just keep your units together and try to inflict as much loss as possible with no regard to actual strategic or tactical objectives. No, sorry this game had good potential but is lacking vital motivation points. I refunded it. UPDATED 2018-12-27 Buy Wars & Battles: Normandy for an easy to learn but much more complex game for half the price.
This is the sort of game I like. However there are some problems with the implementation. The manual doesn't explain the game well enough. For example - rough terrain gives a defensive bonus. But what is rough terrain? There are various types of terrain on the map but no mention that I could find of what each type represents? It seemed swamp and forest - are those rough? The counters have numbers and there are examples given in manual of what the numbers represent but it seems it hasn't been proofread. For example a 12-8-10 panther battalion has 12 attack v armor, 8 attk v inf, 8 movement. What does the 10 on the counter represent? I suppose it's actually 10 movement but I'd rather not have to guess. The rules are quite brief which is good, but also bad because it's hard to get a sense for how things work. For example there is a chance for attacker to select a hex to fire at but when the game turn executes it seems this choice is not offered to the player. There is also mention of a German fire bonus but no explanation of how much this bonus is, or how effective fire is. There are clearly steps for the units but no mention of this in the rules so it's difficult/impossible for the player to understand how many steps a unit has. Is the unit you are looking at a 1 step unit that is almost ready to shatter? Or does it have more steps and it can probably survive an attack or 2? I guess the game has potential to be a fun little game but I couldn't make enough sense of it to enjoy it. :(
Nice map and tactically interesting to play. Unfortunately I have not been able to finish a game due to crashes. Manual too brief to know why certain actions can / cannot be done. If the technical problems are solved then I would recommend it.
Too many bugs at its current version, rule book is a joke (no real wargamer would dare to write this short content-less rulebook), seems they just try to make small money by underdevelloped game. That is a shame because the Korsun Pocket situation is relly interesting.....

Bad, bad, bad. Bug after bug. Running vanilla Win10 on a dedicated gaming machine. Stacked unit selection works intermittantly, game crashes mid turn, unit moves with either right mouse or left mouse button, numerous wanted to look at units using right click but somehow magically move previous viewed unit. Right click stack examination often leaves unit graphic fully stretched and will not go back to a single stack graphic. This game has been out for how long?!? Slitherine/matrix sure didn't beta this before taking on this and the other Yobo russian game - not a good sign on QA folks! Will be looking to get a refund immediately. Player of war games for 20+ years....
For fans of turn-based strategies, despite the inflated price for our region. Buy at discounts and enjoy. Rating - will last for a few days: (7.5 out of 10) Pros: ✅Quite a nice visual component. ✅Ability to play with a friend. ✅Fast entry threshold. ✅There is a small manual. ✅There is localization into different languages. Minuses: ❌Frequent crashes. ❌Relatively high price for such a project. ❌The game is very simple and there is no supply or number of troops (soldiers/equipment) in a combat unit. The note: ⚡The game at the beginning seems very simple, but the more moves there are, the more interesting it is to play because the Wehrmacht and the Red Army receive reinforcements from different sides, which sometimes changes the course of the battle. In 5 playthroughs, I never had a scenario repeat itself.
What I love the most about this game is it’s simplicity, it reminds me of the old Avalon Hill board game “Blitzkreig”! This game has so much potential and I love playing it - when it’s working - that is. Constant crashes have ended my playing it, I’m hoping some fixes come out and soon. The manual could also use some work. Half the time I have no idea what’s going on. If the improvements are made I would purchase the add ons in a minute.
