⭐⭐⭐🌑🌑 (6.5 / 10) https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3466542059
Holy hell this game Sprite art is beautiful, music is hit and miss, but the gameplay? Like one of the hardest top down retro style combat games you will play. 4 lives to beat the whole thing which I suspect is 5 levels, but about halfway the difficulty goes through the roof. With enemies that spawn right on top of you, projectiles from off screen you barely have time to react to, confusing items which you only fully learn how they work through trial and error and oh yeah! Even the environment F*!*s you over sometimes when it makes it seem like you can pass through some objects when you can't which is KIND OF A PROBLEM while you're also avoiding traps. So yeah, if the idea of a game channelling the vibes of retro games from the 80s/90s (complete with being short so it has to be hard) appeals to you go for it! But for everyone else? not recommended. I've beaten games like this before, but I just can't feel motivation to beat this one with so many out there
I think people are too harsh towards it. Not a masterpiece, but decent arcade style action game, which feels something like Gauntlet mixed with Shock Troopers. Challenging levels, fantastic sprite art and solid soundtrack. Lack of continues can be criticized, but the game is short enough and not that troublesome to get used to. It certainly feels like a game, which you can boot up on MAME for better or worse. The game lacks indications for attacks of some enemies, level 3 is not great in terms of design and the Infinite Mode is not fleshed out (it's too boring and amount of power ups is too small for it). New Game+ feels like even greater challenge though. The default price is certainly quite high, but it's worth getting on sale.
Battle Axe is an arcade style game with two main modes of play: Arcade and Infinite. Arcade mode allows for 1 to 2 players and is a very simple move and hit style game. There are only 4 buttons to use in addition to movement keys: attack, special, use, and projectile. There are also 3 characters to choose from with different stats, but I found one character to just be better than the others. The game also allows for 3 upgrades to your character over the course of the game: Speed Up, Attack Up, and Projectile Attack Up. If you or you and a friend enjoy very arcady games, this might scratch an itch for you, but I found this game to be VERY samey very quickly and I found that the general gameplay was pretty boring. You pretty much just go around and kill everything in 1 hit, even with the weakest character, then you hit a boss you will quickly overwhelm you. If you beat the boss, you move onto the next stage (4 in total) and repeat the same process, but with stronger enemies that usual take 2 hits. The levels are extremely simple, offering no navigational challeng, but they aren't just straight aways either, so finding your way forwards sometimes takes a little longer than you'd like. The art that this game sells on it's cover is really nice, but has nothing to do with the pixel graphics that game actually has to offer, and the game itself vascilates between extremely easy and extremely hard far too quickly. Since there's no story involved and the campaign is so short, there really isn't much to this game. Unless you REALLY like arcade games and can't find a better one, you're probably going to get bored with this game really fast.
Artificially inflated difficulty and some truly terrible level design choices make this one an easy pass. There are plenty of retro hack n' slash games out there worth your time.
I can't recommend this until they fix coop controllers being busted on steam deck. wife and i have wireless PS5 controllers hooked up that work in every other game except this one.
This is a pretty basic "arcade-y" hack and slash that is (a) bit clumsy, and (b) waaaaaaaaaay, waaaaaaaaay over-priced for what you get. Like....If it was a fiver I'd think okay, but £25? That is insane. It's a very limited experience, with three characters who have pretty samey move-sets. A short-range slash, a dashing attack and a ranged attack, and...uh...well, nothing else bar special items that give you health or some area-of-attack type effect. The tasty graphics and decent music are doing a lot of heavy lifting for the simplistic action on offer, though in the case of the former are also a bit of a weakness. Everything is large and detailed but takes up too much screen-space, so you can sometimes have an enemy you can't see that will quickly charge you with no way of dodging the attack. There's a bit of fun to be had here, but at less than an hour to finish and with nothing truly special about it, it's in no way recommended at full-price. Even with it currently on sale at £6.24 I'd say it's not worth it for what you'll get out of it. When the likes of HollowKnight and Silksong are £20, or excellent similar games like Hyper Light Drifter and Tunic offer more than an hour for the same price, this is just too average overall. You'll get a longer experience buying the original Chaos Engine, which might be just as clumsy but at least has the excuse of being around thirty years older than this game and has a price-tag reflective of that age.
