I am enjoying the game so far! I feel right at home since I used to play the pilot in Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime. If anyone else has played Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime as the pilot and gotten the engine upgrade that damages enemies, then you will already be familiar with this game's combat style. It plays just like that except there is a lot of other cool stuff added like a stun sword, grappling hook, and a versatile shield that let's you throw items around or dash about at high speed. The game's graphics and controls are nicely polished, and trying out different loadout options before each run gives the gameplay a noticeable difference in how things play out. Different loadouts really do change the playstyle of each mission. Power weapon pickups and stage hazards add a nice arena shooter feel, and the power weapons especially are very well done. There are around a dozen of them, they have a good kick, and the ammo feels just right. Mission objectives and bosses mix things up enough to keep the gameplay fresh. The difficulty can ramp up when you go after the challenges challenges, but the assist options let you turn off anything that feels too punishing so you don't have to worry about getting stuck. There is also a story unfolds as you finish missions. I have a collection of roguelites on Steam Deck, but this one has me coming back for it's distinct combat rush. If you give it a chance be sure to check out the flamethrower; it's awesome.
Harnessing the mechanics in Baseless takes some practice but once it *clicks* its fluid and endlessly fun. There's a wide choice of weapons unlocked as you play and creative melee choices that keep every level fresh and engaging. The soundtrack is full of absolute bangers, the characters throughout are charming and interesting, and the progression of the story kept me on the edge of my seat. Highly recommend if you're looking for a unique indie to dig your teeth into.
I'm early in the game, but I'm loving it! It is amazing that this was made by a solo indie developer. All of the art, all of the music, all of the story, all of the programming: one man! And all of it is top notch. The main gameplay mechanic takes some getting used to, but once you get it, you start feeling like a force to be reckoned with. Every win is so satisfying.
Just beat the first boss so I’m early but damn this game is juicy. The art is fantastic. The music and sounds are great. The weapons are satisfying to use. Definitely deserves to be picked up
Baseless is such a well executed game concept that I cannot get enough of and foresee many hours playing in. The combat is so fun to learn and difficult to master, the art style is bright and colorful. Absolutely recommend you give it a shot if you are a fan of bullet hells, awesome soundtacks, beautiful art design, and fun, yet challenging, gameplay.
Baseless is a boldly experimental action game that immediately distinguishes itself through a single, uncompromising idea: movement is inseparable from shooting. Developed by Fermenter Games and published by First Break Labs, the game takes the familiar framework of a fast-paced shooter and rebuilds it around physics, momentum, and spatial awareness. Rather than treating guns as tools solely for offense, Baseless turns every shot into a locomotion decision, forcing players to think about positioning, trajectory, and timing with every pull of the trigger. The central mechanic defines the entire experience. The protagonist cannot walk or jump in any traditional sense; instead, firing a weapon propels the character in the opposite direction of the shot. Aiming downward launches you upward, firing sideways sends you skidding across curved planetary surfaces, and poorly timed shots can easily fling you into hazards or enemy fire. At first, this control scheme feels alien and even hostile, especially for players accustomed to conventional twin-stick or run-and-gun shooters. Early encounters often involve accidental overcorrections and frantic attempts to regain control. However, as muscle memory develops, movement and combat begin to merge into a single fluid language, and the game’s unique rhythm starts to click. Level design is built entirely around this recoil-driven mobility. The environments consist of fragmented planetoids, low-gravity arenas, and curved surfaces that constantly challenge your sense of orientation. Gravity shifts, obstacles float in space, and enemy placement often exploits the player’s momentum rather than raw damage output. Traversal becomes a puzzle in itself, where reaching a safe vantage point or escaping a collapsing fight requires deliberate shot placement and an understanding of inertia. Defensive tools like shields and momentum-canceling abilities add nuance, allowing brief moments of control amid otherwise chaotic movement, and encouraging players to think tactically rather than react impulsively. Combat encounters emphasize mastery over reflex alone. Enemies are designed to pressure positioning, surrounding the player or forcing movement into dangerous angles. Success often depends on anticipating where recoil will send you after each shot, not just on eliminating threats quickly. Boss fights push this concept even further, combining bullet-heavy attack patterns with environmental hazards that demand precise movement planning. These encounters feel less like traditional firefights and more like kinetic puzzles, where survival hinges on reading patterns and managing momentum as carefully as ammunition. Visually, Baseless adopts a clean, colorful sci-fi aesthetic that prioritizes readability in motion-heavy scenarios. Characters and environments are stylized rather than hyper-detailed, ensuring that players can track their position and trajectory even during the most frantic moments. Bright effects and clear enemy silhouettes help maintain clarity without dulling the spectacle of high-speed combat. The presentation strikes a balance between playful and intense, reinforcing the idea that while the mechanics are demanding, the world itself is meant to feel energetic and expressive rather than oppressive. Narrative elements are woven lightly into the experience, offering context without overwhelming the gameplay. The story provides motivation and personality, framing the action within a broader sci-fi conflict and giving the protagonist a voice and purpose. Dialogue and character interactions add charm and humor, breaking up the intensity of combat-heavy sequences and giving the universe a sense of identity. While the narrative is not the primary draw, it complements the gameplay by grounding the abstract mechanics in a cohesive world. The game’s greatest strength is also its most divisive aspect. The steep learning curve demands patience and persistence, and players unwilling to adapt to its unconventional controls may find the experience frustrating rather than rewarding. Precision is critical, and small mistakes can have dramatic consequences, especially in later stages where hazards are less forgiving. Input sensitivity and control preferences play a significant role in enjoyment, and the game tends to reward players who are willing to experiment with settings and approaches until they find a comfortable balance. Ultimately, Baseless stands as a confident example of indie design that prioritizes originality over accessibility. It challenges players to relearn fundamental assumptions about movement and combat, offering a payoff that feels genuinely earned once its systems are mastered. For those who enjoy mechanically demanding action games and appreciate ideas that push beyond genre conventions, Baseless delivers a distinctive, momentum-driven experience that feels unlike anything else in the shooter space. Rating: 8/10
Definitely a very fun and creative roguelike game. The character art is cute and very eye catching, The gameplay is a little difficult to get a hang of especially if you are using a mouse, it's definitely a high learning curve. Also it's a little hard to aim since your weapon at enemies since your weapon is your movement, I personally found it a little difficult because of the recoil. A very solid game I definitely recommend especially if you like roguelikes.
Fun and unique movement mechanics and classic Roguelite player progression paired with a cast of original characters. Also fishing Buy it!!!
An incredibly good looking game with some excellent gameplay to boot. Unique but above all just a really tight and satisfying experience to play. Definitely up my alley and I'm excited to sink my teeth in some more!
This game is shockingly under the radar and deserves so much more attention and love than it is getting. Idk if I'd call it a "roguelike" or "roguelite" but it is definitely a unique and fun experience.
