Nope, nada, no. Gameplay mechanics are completely broken which removes all the fun factor once the levels start getting serious with enemies. Full explanation below. Let me first say that I double dipped as I have this game on switch. I only ever played the first couple of levels on switch and said "oh this is cool" but soon after literally stopped using my switch completely, (I only ever played it in handheld mode, I don't have a screen for the dock), once I got into PC gaming. The music is absolutely outstanding and driving, though no tracks ever really reach the heights of the ones on the first 2 levels, but, it's still all good stuff. When I saw it for a measly $6 AUD I thought why not buy it again and play through it proper on my laptop. I am sure it will have a better frame rate and graphics too. That, it did. It seems to have an uncapped frame rate and 4 GFX presets. There is no window control, but it seems to be in a windowed full screen format, not exclusive full screen. You can NOT change any of that, you can NOT change resolution. It did look like it matched my screen's native 1440P but I am not truly sure to be honest. Besides the lack of any serious resolution and windowing options, the next thing that annoyed me were the controls (I play with an xbox one elite 2 controller here). They are not re mappable in any sense, and unlike the switch version you can NOT shoot with the X button (Y on Switch) like you can with the switch version. Your main shot is hard wired to left bumper or left trigger, and secondary shot to right trigger/bumper. This is backwards to me. I could make it work on the switch, as it also threw the Y and A (as in X and B on xbox) buttons into the mix.. What I did was shoot with the Y button, jump with B and then use the right trigger for the secondary shot. Using the left trigger for the primary shot will NEVER feel intuitive to me as a right hander and I think the developer must be left handed and just never realised there are people different to them! Why remove the option of shooting with the face button? I don't get it. In any case, I persevered, cranked up the music and played through the first few levels. It was fun, but something I started noticing was as of about level 6 when a lot more enemies were about, above, below and beside you, you literally have NO control of the direction of the shooting. It's all automatic. You just press the button! This is what I mean by broken gameplay mechanics. For example.. there are these nasty little critters that can remove your entire life bar in a second, starting level six. I tried to get through level seven at least 10 times and I gave up and decided to return the game. Why you ask? Cause I was literally standing right next to the critter, imagine him an inch to my right on the screen, and I was desperately trying to shoot him and the gun was shooting upwards and it just wouldn't shoot him! It was aiming at some creatures on a different planet (if you play the game you'll know what I mean by different planet) above me whilst the critter on my right mercilessly drained my life. In level 7, you have to protect 3 machines. Yes, these are as bad as the escort type of missions we all hate. Why do developers purposely add the types of levels we, as gamers, do NOT like? I will never understand this. But every time I was 99% there, I was literally just about to save the last machine EVERY TIME, that critter with the kill shot would jump next to me and drain my entire life bar in a second and that was it. After I repeated that 10 times in a row.. I said.. "this is no longer any kind of FUN". If a game is not FUN, there is zero incentive to play it. I tried to at least jump his shot but this critter mimics your jump and shoots you airborne. So please developers., tell me HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO KILL SOMETHING THAT IS LITERALLY RIGHT NEXT TO ME IF YOUR GAME WILL NOT ALLOW THE GUN TO SHOOT AT HIM? The game relies entirely on AI aiming, and it is really really broken. I can only imagine how bad it would get in even harder levels down the track. And I said, I am not supporting this baloney, and I got it refunded. Believe me you would understand if you played it and there was literally enemies around you, killing you, that you couldn't aim at and shoot.. Even moving left and right to try trick the AI to start shooting to my right didn't work. LOL. Frustration and wanting to throw a controller at the screen is NOT FUN. Challenge is great, but not that kind of challenge where it's cheap death after cheap death (oh, and you get one life per level, that's it). Dear developers, let me tell you how to fix this game. You make aiming controlled with right stick, aka twin stick shooter, so it's up to the player what to shoot, and you make the primary shot AUTO shoot when right stick is aimed anywhere. Because we still need to jump. Next, you put jump on left or right button/trigger, USERS's choice., Secondary weapon goes on the opposite trigger. Planet hopping on the left or right stick click, i.e. L3 or R3. Done. Suddenly a 1/10 game becomes and 8/10 game. It's stylish, sounds wonderful, has a good variety of weapons, yet it's no fun. Oh and lastly, there are little green monsters that revive your health. But you guessed it, they disappear from the screen in a few seconds and they run in the opposite direction, at the same speed as you LOL. I literally gave up chasing for health pickups cause all I'd be doing was chasing things that were running from me that I couldn't catch up to, then they'd just vanish. Pro tip: If you are dead set on playing this, only go for health pickups travelling towards you. It's not often I see a developer really go out of their way to make a game no fun to play, but they have done it admirably here. It's literally almost ZERO fun. This coming from an arcade/shooter/action game fanatic. Yep, 1/10.
Please follow United Critics for quality reviews
Good things:
This game is fun at start for first 5 levels. I liked the story presented in the game because it was a journey where you start as nobody and end up as a hero. I think music and sound design in this game are solid and soundtracks are good. The basic jumping and fast planet switching is working and is serviceable for a platformer. There are different enemies with unique mechanics for each one of them and nests that spawns them also look unique for each of the enemy types.
Bad things:
The worst thing is the controls. You can’t choose where you want to shoot as the game decide this for you. This game relies entirely on AI aiming and that aiming is broken when you have enemies to your left and right and above you etc. By playing the game you know yourself what enemy type is the most dangerous and that you should kill them first but the game decides for you so you are now shooting to your left to kill basic enemies while the death laser one to your right shoots you and the flying enemies dive to kill you. This is a big problem from level 6 and up as I tried to finish level 8 many times but because of that aiming I am almost always firing not at the enemies that I wanted to kill fast. I think I needed 10 tries and a lot of luck to barely finish level 8. Creating a game that is about platforming and shooting and taking the shooting controls away from the player is a very bad decision. There were many times where I had enemies to my right and AI decided that I want to shoot to my left or up where there were no enemies at all. Also with the way the enemies spawn you can just be in the middle of a jump and when you are falling enemy that stuns you get spawned where you will land so you are now stunned for a few seconds and the enemy that attacks with death ray will now kill you before the stun ends making it a cheap game over. Also sometimes when you kill enemies they spawn little green slime that will heal you but they always tun away from you so most of the time it is pointless to try and catch them as you will run into more enemies and lose more life than you would heal. It is basically like running away health pack that will make you run into an army of enemies only to disappear if you didn’t catch it in few seconds. Killing enemies also spawn random weapons but each weapon type is great only versus one or 2 types of enemies and not great versus others so many times to win a level you just have to be lucky with RNG weapon drops and get the best weapons for each part of the level and enemies spawning. It is also funny how level 2 have a boss that you have to defeat and after that you will never meet any boss. It is like they wanted to show you that they can do a level with a boss in it just to never again do it. Just like they made level 9 a labyrinth with different switched that you have to touch to get thru it and again they never use that idea ever again. It is like they just wanted to test if they can make levels like that in the game. It looks like this game maybe was just a testing ground for different ideas and mechanics. What almost all players hate in games is escort missions and this game of course has escort missions! Level 7 is bad as you have to protect 3 buildings on 3 different planets but the worst of the escort mission is level 10 where you have to escort NPC that is moving slowly and does not defend itself but is targeted by all enemies and since you can’t pick where you shoot you have to get hit instead of him from one side while you shoot the other side. How are you supposed to escort an NPC if you can’t even pick the direction you want to shoot your gun at or the enemy you want to shoot at? I just wanted to see how broken that level is at hard difficulty and the enemies deal more damage now and I think more are spawned so on hard it is impossible to even get to the middle of the level without you or NPC ending up dead. The developers didn’t even test their achievements and didn’t even know what is what in their game so now achievement called Energyman has an icon of a shotgun or achievement called Risky maneuver has a wrong description that states “Finish all the levels on hard difficulty“ while in reality I got it for jumping from planet to planet into an enemy while having almost no HP. I wonder how many of the other achievements I didn’t get have the wrong description are are just not working since 2 of them were achieved by 0% of players and 4 others only by 1.5% of the most hardcore players.
Conclusion
This could be a good game but bad shooting controls and escort missions and strange developer decisions makes it almost unplayable at later levels. Overall score 2.5/10
Robonauts is a console ported low poly physics based platformer with a simple gimmick (that's been done dozens of times before), instead of flat platforms you jump between different "planets" each with their own gravity well, so instead of running left and right on static platforms, you run around the circumference of various circles. What an incredible innovation, surely this will revive the old, dead platformer genre. Oh wait, it didn't. The game also features a "shooter" component as you pick up a power armour that lets you shoot things. Yeah robots wear power armour now, whatever. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The game features lazy low-polygon "retro" assets, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the 1990s. It's unclear why the developers weren't able to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets for the game, and also irrelevant... what matters is that this looks bad as a result of their decisions, a compromise PC gamers shouldn't have to put up with. Because this is designed for consoles, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the inferior console gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the console-centric developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for consoles forces upon a game. Once more, console peasants have made gaming worse for everyone. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 4 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. Robonauts has the far too high price of around $4 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam.
Beautiful graphics Never played anything like it before Difficult but kept me wanting to keep playing Made my viewers dizzy which I thought was hilarious! Great game for your buck!
Game is great... For a mobile game, not great for a PC game. There is very little information available on the screen for what items you are looting, and everything is auto target, there is no way to disable this. Game is also too easy, brainless in a way, 10 minutes in, and I stopped caring.
Fun in coop mode
Wow! I like this kind of game very much!
