In this city-building strategy game, you control a group of exiled travelers who decide to restart their lives in a new land. They have only the clothes on their backs and a cart filled with supplies from their homeland. The townspeople of Banished are your primary resource.

Unbelievably bad
I've played Banished off and on for many years now. It is an excellent game. Graphics are good. Gameplay is great. It is just the right level of challenge (you can adjust it) and reward. You become so invested in your little village, starting out with just a handful of people and following their descendants over many years, through illness, famine, fire and other disasters. You watch as you (hopefully) support them to grow as a community, develop schools, pubs, markets and hospitals, and increase their happiness and health. You have to balance a growing population with sustainable sources of food and other goods like tools and clothes. Mess it up and you can't support your aging population, can't keep everything running with a shrinking population or can't feed your booming one! It is so satisfying when you get it right, though. Even with no mods it's a fantastic game and has some challenging achievements. If you do want to mod, there are some great options out there and lots of community support. I can't recommend Banished enough.
Literally the best city builder in the world
Everyone died.
UPDATEEEE PLEASEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!
I only really started playing now (2026) and I enjoyed it enough to "finish" it by getting all the achievements (a lot of settlers died in the process :D ). It can be both relaxing and riveting, music is nice, there is a learning curve and it's satisfying to see your settlements live longer as you learn what works. One thing I really liked about this city builder is that there is no war, threats come from nature itself. Even though the game is simple in appearance, there is plenty of subtelty, such as different crops maturing at different times (important if the cold comes early), or diseases behaving differently (spreading rapidly or not, more or less lethal...) I definitely recommend !
A peaceful city builder where one bad winter turns your cozy village into a dramatic survival documentary.
