Game title: Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition 10/10 overall rating: 10/10 Masterpiece Release date: 2013 (original 2000) Developer: Overhaul Games (Original: Bioware) Publisher: Atari, Beamdog, Skybound Games (Original: Black Isles Studios, Interplay Entertainment) Genre: Role-playing PC requirements: OS: Windows 7, 8.1, 10 64 bit Processor: Dual Core Processor Memory: 1 GB RAM Graphics: OpenGL 2.0 compatible Storage: 4 GB available space Recommendations: If you would like to have some quality of life improvements, new content , and characters, play the Enhanced Edition. The quality of the writing for the additional content for the enhanced edition by Beamdog is debated on by some. I personally thought the additions were charming and well done. If you want to focus on the original content, the new stuff isn’t really intrusive and you can avoid interacting with it pretty easily. Just leave the NPCs that are from it somewhere and don’t talk to them. The additional content is written a bit differently I will admit but i don’t really have a problem with it. Alternatively, if you would like to play the original version of the game, you can get that for free by getting the enhanced edition on GOG, then use the code you get in the extras to unlock the original Baldur's Gate 2 version. Both versions have many mods available. If you are planning on playing both 1 and 2, the game provides a feature allowing one to port your character between games keeping your stats and some items.. The order to play if you are porting your character is Baldurs Gate 1, Siege of Dragonspear, Baldurs Gate II: Shadow of Amn, Baldurs Gate: Throne of Bhaal. When playing Throne of Bhaal, be aware that the intention was to have the expansion twice as long. They ended up shortening the game but didn’t account for the party member banter timer. So when you get to the end, look up how to accelerate dialogue. Otherwise you may miss out on some important character development for some of your party members. Graphics and aesthetics: Just as beautiful as the art in 1. Environments that encouraged me to explore everywhere not just for the plot but to see the pretty art. One thing I really appreciate about the enhanced edition for 2 is that they listened to the community and removed the motion comic type animations for the cutscenes and stuck to the cgi animation that would be found in the original games. They even animated the cutscenes for the new enhanced edition content in the style of the original games animation. Gameplay: (from bg1 review: Never would have believed dnd mechanics could be translated into real time gameplay like this and work. But the game proved me wrong. Feels way better than actual D&D combat too. Strategizing each fight felt very engaging.) Definitely a step up from Baldurs gate 1. Takes a lot more strategy in combat to make sure your party doesn’t die. The NPC AI and variety of spells is incredible. Especially in Throne of Bhaal. In Throne of Bhaal you have to be almost always engaged in what every party member is doing in combat. Audio: Each environment had very fun background noises fitting for the area. There's chatter and commotion ambience in the city, animal noises in the woods, and beautiful music throughout Audience: Pre-Teens and up. It would depend on the child but the violence is pretty tame tbh. Occasionally enemies explode into red cubes but it's not very graphic. There are some slightly suggestive moments. Officially rated T. Difficulty: The difficulty options are extremely varied so you can make this a very challenging and difficult game or play in story mode if you would like to breeze through it without worrying about combat. I will say however, Throne of Bhaal gets a lot harder than most of the rest of 1 and 2. The final boss of Throne of Bhaal was difficult to a fault. It’s definitely doable and worth it because the end feels amazing to get to after such a long journey though. Grind: Can’t say I really experienced any parts that felt grindy. I wish Throne of Bhaal was longer in fact as it feels a bit too short. Some of the fights that are harder in Throne of Bhaal might feel grindy simply due to all the reloading after dying. Story: Fantastic conclusion to the main character's story. Playing through the whole saga with one character feels incredible. Character interactions are a lot more frequent in 2 than they were in 1 and you will get more involved with your companions' lives. The story goes in many different interesting directions but comes together in the end. The villain for Shadow of Amn is somehow even cooler than Baldur’s Gate 1 villain. Throne of Bhaal will leave you wanting more. There’s a reason these games are considered some of the best RPGs in history DLC: The Black pits 2: Gladiators of Thay is awesome for testing out different character builds and has a nice arena quest continuing off of The Black Pits DLC in Baldur's gate 1’s enhanced edition. The second Black Pits is a nice step up from the first one and has more characters to interact with. Wish Beamdog got to do more with Baldur’s Gate because it feels like they had plans to continue this story. I give it a 7-/10(good) The additional characters and locations added by the enhanced edition are a lot of fun despite having a different feeling to the writing from the rest of the game. If I had to rate only the additional content the enhanced edition adds to the main game I’d say 8/10(great). Throne of Bhaal was a beautiful conclusion to the saga. Some of the most engaging fights are found in this expansion. Characters that have been with you through 1, Siege of Dragonspear, and Shadow of Amn finally reaching the end of their journeys and character development. I cried before going into the final fight and preparing to say goodbye to all of my allies. I have 2 complaints about this DLC. One is that the end fight was way too hard. I’m good with difficulty, but the final fight was definitely way overkill. It's worth it to finish the game and see what endings you get but don’t be ashamed to look up a strategy guide. The other complaint is that this was supposed to be a much longer stand alone game. Sadly that didn’t happen so they had to scale back the size of the project to just being an expansion pack. Due to this the story had to become a lot more linear, the size of the game was shrunk, and some companions didn't have enough time to make it through all of their timed dialogue beats. If it wasn’t for that, this would be the perfect conclusion. I give Throne of Bhaal a 9/10 (amazing). Just occasionally having characters getting stuck on each other but it's easy to shimmy them off. Don’t know if I should consider it a bug or not but the dialogue timer for Throne of Bhaal seems based on if the game was longer still. Replay-ability: I will definitely be replaying this one day in the future. I definitely want to try the huge modding communities out. Lots of choices and ways to go about roleplaying through these games.
