Despite being an old game, Neverwinter Nights is still a good game. The original campaign is decent, but the expansions almost made me stop playing. Shadows of Undrentide can be frustrating, while Hordes of the Underdark starts well, but the difficulty increases too much during the final act. The best thing about the game is its longevity, since you can install a large number of community-created modules and continue enjoying new adventures.
(auto) This is not the old game where every chest is planned and calculated, every goblin and the experience from it... Now it's a grind. Yes, yes, everything has been "auto-leveled" here. And now if you farmed a level earlier, the items in the chests change, and the number of enemies multiplies. For the sake of curiosity, I started with a "saved" character with a high level and didn't find a single static item except for a couple "for the task". The same first magic ring that was carefully placed by the developers in the prologue can turn into garbage, so it's more expensive to sell, but garbage. Also, in the very first chapter, some features are broken because of this. For example, in the prison area, you could clear the streets and no more bandits would appear, but in the beggars' quarter, zombies would regenerate until you kill the necromancer, now they don't, but there are a million of these zombies and it's stupidly tiring because it takes time, and there's no game challenge. They also made the Neverwinter guards immortal in the first chapter, meaning you can drive enemies towards them and they will clear the map themselves because sometimes they run from one enemy to another, and you get experience. Because of this, the ring you can get in Helm's Castle (and it was almost the best in the game because it was unique to the entire game) is now garbage, because you find ten even better and the reward for your research and choices becomes invisible and you don't feel the progression. In short, the mechanics are broken. In the addons Shadows of the Undertide and Horde of Darkness, this breaks the gameplay even more because in each chest there is a weapon +20 God's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. And the unique talking sword goes to the trash, because it is simply a hundred times worse than any garbage that will now be generated. Although according to the company, it was a fairly valuable weapon (if you play honestly and didn't cheat your weapon) throughout the entire campaign. If you are "new", that is, recently born and wanted to touch the "classics", then you will be surprised why so many people bow to such low-grade crap. If you are a "veteran", then purely for the sake of nostalgia you will run away and will not return to any company. They touched on what was not necessary. The only thing these "remakers" did coolly was restore the network game. Updated the mapeditor to create their own modules for playing online. That's all. If you have a group of friends who love D&D, then you can take it to play online, especially with good visualization, let's say, a replacement for the tabletop in real life. No more.
Played this at launch in 2002, played with randoms online, friends, family, and it has a consistently great story. The mechanics for classic DnD are wonderful, world building was way ahead of its time, no microtransactions to play any part of this little corner of the Faerun universe. Just a bunch of folks working on an excellent game, story, and immersive atmosphere with whatever they had at the time.
Hours Spent. This is just the EE version. Triple it to account for the original releases. The multiplayer RP communities are all pretty crazy awesome,
This game is amazing and so are the active persistent multiplayer worlds
One of the VERY BEST games ever made.
Great game, super nostalgic. I just started playing again after not having touched the original game since around 2008 and it still absolutely holds up. Character customization is in line with 3rd edition dungeons and dragons, as well as the mechanics and game design are all true to that form. If you are into point and clicks with table top role playing game aspects, then this is the game for you. I can see people coming back to this from having gotten into the genre from titles such as Baldur's Gate 3, looking for something a little more old-fashioned or retro, very similar style, just a touch older.
I literally have hundreds of hours in this game before it became the EE on Steam. I gotz the original discs around here somewhere, but Steam makes it so easy to play. Enjoy!
Campaigns are just okay, the persistent roleplay words are where its at, things that exist nowhere else in the way they do here.
Old, janky, and simply not fun. If you want a quality D&D experience, play KOTOR.
