Overall Rating: 7.5/10 Axiom Verge is a respectable entry to the Metroidvania genre, feeling close to the vibe of some of the older 2D Metroid games. Overall, it does many things right, creates an intriguing atmosphere through it's soundtrack, artstyle and story, but does have some rough edges along the way. Pro's: - simple but catchy soundtrack that definitely adds to the vibe - awesome pixelart at times, especially regarding backdrops and certain characters - uniqe set of gadgets to use - variety of weapons that allow different approaches to any situation - interesting story to keep you motivated - many things to discover off the beaten path Neutral: - This is a metroidvania thing, so it depends on how you react to it personally, but I did get lost ~3 times along the way, not knowing where to go next to progress the story. There are no "quest-markers" and no reminders, which makes discovering something feel more rewarding, but also causes you to backtrack aimlessly quite a bit every now and then. Thankfully the map shows quite nicely where there are still unexplored areas, and you'll most likely find some optional upgrades along the way. Con's: - Some enemies and bosses feel like it is impossible to avoid damage, so straight-up trying to kill them before your health runs out is probably your best bet. I'd like to be able to gain an advantage through my movement, possibly even beating bosses without loosing health, but I honestly don't feel it's possible for some of the bosses. Some enemies jump-attack you out of nowhere without indicators to their hiding-spots. (at least on your first try) Other enemies tend to slow you down - laser crawlers and steam/sand creatures. Either you wait for them to pass, which tends to be annoying especially when backtracking, or you'll have to accept some damage trying to force past them. - Finding a health upgrade-piece just to need ~4 more of the same to actually gain any effects is not a fun mechanic in my oppinion. It just spreads out the process and feels unsatisfying. - There are some secret levels that are apparently procedurally generated. While this could be a nice idea to add to the replayability of the game, these levels felt kind of off. They were mostly a mixture of existing rooms, just with very glitchy visuals. These levels sometimes looked so broken, I couldn't even figure out which tiles you can walk on, or which tiles do damage to you. Also, once, I couldn't even exit the secret level and had to quit to the main menu to get out. That should really not happen in a game. - there is a dash mechanic that works by pressing the trigger into the desired direction twice. On my XBox Wireless controller, that was kind of hard to do, especially when dashing diagonally. On the other hand I would often dash when I did not intend to. So yeah, some rough edges here and there, but If you like the genre and are ok with some hickups, I would still recommend this game as it had entertained me well for about 11hours.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

Yep, its Metroid. Interesting power-ups. Sound design is horrendous. Loooooots of backtracking. Enemies are very annoying. Seems like most of them just LUNGE at you at lightspeed and is basically a guarantened hit since you lack defensive moves. Some are too small to shoot, but as soon as you duck to shoot them, they lunge at you and you take a hit. There are enemies that keep jumping at you, without giving pause. Other enemies just seem to spam bullets everywhere, so you have to kill them before a stray bullet hits you. A very annoying type of enemy are the ones you need to corrupt first before being able to damage them. Bosses on the other hands were too easy and predictable. Has a very annoying map system. Unlike Metroid, it doesn't marks places with items and while there is a mark system, it only lets you place two marks per zone. Finding secret rooms is very annoying too. Each save file has 5 rooms in different spots, and if you didn't notice the scanlines effect from getting near them, good luck going back to every other possible entrance trying to find it. Also there are no warp rooms, so all backtracking is done MANUALLY. Has a lot of different weapons, and I can only ask: why? At first you get weapons to reach a few buttons, but then you stop needing them right after. Most have weird bullet patterns that don't help in most situations. Once you get the ice machine gun and the flamethrower, I don't see any reason to use any other weapon. Its not like some enemies are vulnerable to certain weapons like the missiles from Metroid, so why bother? I was baffled that the last weapon you get is an useless boomerang gun.
Good game held back by a few nitpicks that could have made it excellent. The good… the game itself is fun. Nice nostalgic look with a hint if new age tech. Great exploration/rank system to upgrade self and weapons. Bosses can be a challenge but nothing too bad that takes only a few tries. The bad… played on the steam deck and the pesky phase through mechanic later in game was constantly triggered via joystick. And probably the worst aspect of game that really made it a chore the last 1/4 of the game for me was the map and having zero idea where to go next. The amount of time back tracking and wondering what the heck do I do next was a total drag. Very little to no direction. If that one aspect of the game was changed I would give this an A tier rating. But because of it I would lean closer to B.
might of been the worst MV ive ever played. post red trench coat the movement is horrid. finished it forced. not 100% fk that. music is cool. pixel art is cool.
Muito bom jogo pra quem curte retro, 8bits, jogos estilo Metroid, vale a pena.
As far as metroidvanias go, this game is what the doctor ordered. Crisp gameplay, gorgeous sprite work, a thumping soundtrack, tons of secrets, a rich world brimming with mystery and unease, and an absolutely wild plot that has people still discussing it a decade later. I don't think I could ask for more out of this title, other than a continuation. If you have any interest in the genre, this one is worth it.
This is an excellent non-linear action platformer with great presentation and a unique atmosphere about it. Usually with this type of game, like Super Metroid as one of the earliest examples, it will go for a menacing ambience or haunting tones and an oppressive sensation. In this case they do that but also manage to make it pretty groovy, with a soundtrack that somehow manages to be both evocative and funky at the same time. Paired with graphics that are retro, yet still crisply detailed and brilliantly designed, it is to my mind quite "original" for how it looks and sounds. On the game-play front it is very well-designed, with a couple of neat touches that still stand out in a pretty saturated genre by now. There's quite a varied selection of weapons with different uses for them, and some nicely challenging means for exploration and modest environmental puzzles. Overall it's just right when it comes to the difficulty: It's tough but fair, and the design of levels means that, whilst they are quite large, it's not super tedious making your way around. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed it as a slick relatively straight-forward experience that was thoroughly compelling for me. Not everything is perfect though. The story is okay and competent, but nothing more than that. To be fair it doesn't spend a whole lot of time on it, so it's not all that intrusive if it doesn't grab you. Finally: the bosses here look brilliant but don't quite have the same effect when it comes to their attacks. Most are decent enough, though they are fairly sedate compared to more recent titles with multiple attack patterns and bullet-hell-esque design. It also doesn't do the insane platforming set-pieces of games like Ori or Prince Of Persia The Lost Crown, so in that regard it is quite old-skool. There's a very engaging experience to be had here if you want a pure shooter, or like exploring every nook and cranny of a map for hidden items and secrets. It's responsive, tricky to play and has a lot of well developed content. I'd still recommend it even with a large number of this type of game available, but it does come with the caveat that there are more recent games requiring some mad-skills if that's your thing.
